Apple Asks Fair Labor Association for Factory Inspections

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2011 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:37:12 AM GMT
Apple has seen significant pressure from labor rights groups and customers over the treatment of staff manning the factories where the iPhone and iPad are built. Earlier this year, the New York Times ran a rather sobering piece on the general business surrounding the China-based manufacturing facilities employed by Apple and many other consumer electronic and computer companies. In late January, Tim Cook penned a letter to the Apple team insisting that his company takes the welfare of its workers very se... (more)

Apple has a lot of money. This we know. However, the company passed a jaw-dropping milestone this week that accurately illustrates just how much the Cupertino-based company is actually worth. Apple shares surged to an all-time high yesterday, passing the $490 mark and closing at $493.17. This is up $16.49 from just one day previously and represents a 3.46 percent increase for the day. More interestingly, it pushed Apple's capitalization to just shy of $460 billion. This is more than rivals Microsoft and ... (more)

Nikon posted its Q3 earnings report this morning, and there isn't a whole lot to smile about. The cameramaker had to swallow a one-off loss of ¥10.9 billion last quarter (approximately $143.1 million), due to widespread flooding that devastated its Thailand manufacturing plant, in October. Today's report comes just a day after Sony issued similarly dire figures, which it largely attributed to last year's flooding, as well. For the third quarter ended December 31st, (more)

A recent ruling in a French commercial court may see Google put into much larger legal bind globally thanks to the "anti-competitive" nature of Google Maps. Why? Because Google was offering a service that one French company provided for free, thus the latter cried "anti-competitive" to the French court system. (more)

Calibrait, LLC, a company with no history and apparently has been founded with the sole purpose to acquire a patent and sue for patent infringement, claims that Apple directly and indirectly infringe its patent 7,447,265 by offering accelerometers in its mobile devices as well as software that turn iPods, iPads and iPhones into electronic alignment devices. "Ireland's SOPA" to Be Debated Next Week

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2029 days, 5 hours, 44 minutes ago

Earlier this month, we witnessed international outcry and protests from large corporations that opposed the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. SOPA is a highly publicized issue, and it's received a lot of attention. However, receiving significantly less attention is the news that Ireland is set to pass a law that is very similar to SOPA. In fact, it's so similar that it's being referred to as 'Ireland's SOPA.' It looks like Apple's acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans -- business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It's unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. Nintendo releases quarterly earnings report: 61 percent drop in profit, grim forecast

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2030 days, 4 hours, 58 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:34:33 AM GMT
Nintendo released its latest quarterly earnings report this morning and, as with last quarter's report, there's not a whole lot to celebrate. The company posted profits of ¥40.9 billion (about $631.6 million) for the October - December period, representing a 61 percent quarterly drop. That's especially disappointing, considering that this period has traditionally been strong for Nintendo, which had previously forecast an operating profit of ¥1 billion (around $12.9 million). Google this week announced changes to its privacy policy that will see the company track and consolidate user information across all Google services. This means that what you do on YouTube, for example, could be used to offer you targeted ads with other Google services. Though it might be advantageous to have Google inform you you're going to be late for that Google Calendar appointment based on your location and the level of traffic in that area, it's not hard to see how this information might make peop... Nvidia & AMD Say HDD Shortage is Impacting GPU Sales

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2030 days, 5 hours, 19 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:13:42 AM GMT
In the summer of last year, Thailand was hit with some disastrous flooding that continues to affect HDD companies and and the supply of hard drives. It's not unusual to hear HDD companies and tech analysts talk about the flooding and how it is affecting the industry. However, joining the refrain are companies with no stake in the HDD industry. They say that the shortage of hard drives has impacted PC shipments and, as such, had an effect on their businesses. (more)
