Review: Bomb Monkey

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1875 days, 17 hours, 1 minute ago

Without a doubt, Renegade Kid totally killed it with Mutant Mudds earlier this year. With a simple, no-frills structure that struck a major chord with players, the eShop platformer was a sweet dose of purity in a genre that's struggling to maintain relevance in this modern gaming age. (more)

The Legend of Zelda will soon be retold in this nursery

We think our dad is pretty cool, but here's a secret: he's not as cool as this dad. Our dad never put in three months of hard work (over 150 hours!) on something for us before we were even born. Way to look like a chump, pop. (more)

Nintendo: 'People want' the 2D Mario games to be similar

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1883 days, 15 hours, 34 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 20, 2012 8:17:10 AM GMT
I didn't agree with my co-commentator for the Nintendo's E3 press conference on very many things, but even I had to admit that the two new Mario games coming out this year (New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U) looked almost identical in terms of art direction and in gameplay. Adding insult to injury, both games look almost exactly like to the two prior games in the New Super Mario series (New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii). Our man Tony Ponce had already talked about thi... (more)

Nintendo thinking about a next-generation handheld

It should surprise nobody that Nintendo already has its eyes on future handheld systems, but it's always fun to speculate when a company man confirms it. Shigeru Miyamoto is that man, who has said a thing for the Internet. Things! Internet! Videogames! (more)

Miyamoto: Retro-developed Zelda 'not out of the question,' but studio is 'too busy'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1889 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes ago

Retro Studios recently worked on 2010's Wii game Donkey Kong Country Returns, and last year's Mario Kart 7. For the studio's future, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto said it isn't out of the question for Retro to work on the Zelda franchise; however, the Austin-based developer is currently too busy to take on the series. Pokemon Conquest strategically designed to bring in new players

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1892 days, 17 hours, 29 minutes ago

Going into my interview with Pokemon Conquest director Hisashi Koinuma, the DS strategy game seemed like the most inscrutably random agglomeration of properties imaginable. I couldn't begin to imagine a reason anyone would think to merge Pokemon with Nobunaga's Ambition, a strategy game about real Japanese warlords. (more)

E3: New Super Money Bros. 2: Gotta get dat cheese

I was wondering how Nintendo was planning on switching up the Mario formula for New Super Mario Bros. 2, and here's their answer: cold hard cash money. A long-standing staple of the franchise, coins have been given a much greater purpose. The goal of the game? Collect as much coinage as you can. (more)

Why does New Super Mario Bros. 2 look so bland?

When the first screenshots for New Super Mario Bros. 2 were revealed last month, I had this crazy notion that Nintendo discovered a way to add DLC to NSMB on the DS. It wasn't until I saw that big "2" that I realized it was a full-blown sequel. (more)

Jason Rohrer's ninth title, Diamond Trust of London for Nintendo DS, has been teased, tortured and tested since it snagged publisher Zoo Games in May last year. Nintendo has been checking out the master revision of Diamond Trust of London since October 2011, and now, seven months later, it's approved for lift off. And publishing. Mostly publishing. (more)

In Nintendo's year-end fiscal reports briefing, released tonight, the company lays out its future plans for digital distribution. Starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo will begin offering its retail packaged 3DS games digitally through the Nintendo eShop as well, with both versions releasing on the same day this August. This practice will also be standard on Wii U from the launch of that system. (more)

Square Enix hints, nudges and winks about The World Ends With You sequel

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1942 days, 16 hours, 22 minutes ago

The World Ends With You is, besides being an excellent name for a My Chemical Romance song, one of the few non-Final Fantasy RPGs from Square Enix to obtain cult classic status. The last we heard of a potential sequel to the teenager-infused romp through Shibuya was in August of 2010, when series artist Tetsuya Nomura said "I definitely want to make a sequel." (more)

Review: Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir

In theory, the idea behind Spirit Camera is brilliant. Exploiting the 3DS' augmented reality features to turn players into ghost hunters is a marvelous undertaking. I love the thought of scurrying around the house, pretending the 3DS is a magic camera that can see malevolent spirits in the real world. (more)

As much as this might sound like an odd week for downloadable games on Nintendo platforms, it's actually on par with the same mishmash of content we're regularly given. I want to believe that someone is literally drawing names out of a hat to determine these release dates, but the truth is surely much more mundane. (more)
