A strong start to the Reclaimer Trilogy

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1750 days, 23 hours, 11 minutes ago

For over a decade, the Halo series was in the hands of development studio Bungie. In that time, they pioneered two generations of console shooters and created a phenomenon that has generated over $3 billion in sales. Bungie has since moved on from the series that helped establish the Xbox, handing the responsibility over to the new house of Halo, 343 Industries. (more)

Captain Scarlet and the Pirate's Booty is the first story expansion for Borderlands 2 and the overall plot sees you hunting after the legendary Captain Blade's lost treasure of the sands. The DLC takes place in Oasis, and the first person you meet here is Shade, a Hunter S. Thompson lookalike who's kind of lost his mind. (more)

Metro: Last Light will be abandoning the multiplayer aspect of its game, taking out the frankly unnecessary mode to concentrate on a polished single-player campaign. 4A Games admitted on its blog that the announcement was probably a mistake. (more)

Hands-on with Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Vita

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1779 days, 22 hours, 26 minutes ago
Thursday, October 04, 2012 8:56:53 AM GMT
In the same way armchair economists have explained how the release of a Monster Hunter title would “save” the Vita in Japan, many have espoused the necessity of a parallel big-name release for North America. That sales boon is expected to come in the form of Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, which was announced for the Vita during this past E3, albeit with nary a screenshot or video clip to go on. Warface lowers the barrier, raises bar for free-to-play

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1793 days, 23 hours, 7 minutes ago

Development budgets are swelling, while consumer tolerance for higher prices is shrinking. It seems that we are headed towards an impasse. While the free-to-play model has already solidified itself as a viable alternative, there are few, if any, free-to-play games that capture what we expect from core, $60 experiences. (more)

Review: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1820 days ago
Saturday, August 25, 2012 7:22:45 AM GMT
In sixth grade, I would wake up for school at 5:30 AM, but then I started getting up at 4:30 just to get a couple rounds in before class. Call it dedication or a sickening obsession, but I was hooked on CS (nevermind my neighbor who broke into my house to play while I slept!) It was more than a game. It was my social hub, my iTunes visualizer, and my brief entryway into game design (which didn’t go very far.) It is and remains a standout multiplayer shooter that paved the way for things to come with Call... (more)

The contemporary online first-person shooter has a well-established formula at this stage in the genre's history. Start a match, shoot stuff, gain XP, unlock stuff, rinse, and repeat. It is a formula that has worked well for the titans of the FPS scene, but made it hard for a new IP to stand out when their multilayer offerings look too familiar. (more)
