Unreal series has been neglected lately, Epic agrees

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2215 days, 6 hours, 40 minutes ago
Monday, July 25, 2011 8:53:09 AM GMT
Back in the day, Unreal -- the game, not the engine -- was the hotness. It was absurdly fast-paced and addictive and, sadly, hasn't been mentioned since it's lackluster appearance on PS3 in 2007. We're not the only ones who've noticed this absence as it seems Epic studio head Mike Capps shares that sentiment. (more)

Carmack: Call of Duty hating indie devs are 'snooty'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2220 days, 5 hours, 47 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 9:46:38 AM GMT
id Software's John Carmack has called out "snooty" indie developers who hate Call of Duty thanks to its popularity. He says that criticism of the series is "unfounded" and argues that it works off of a proven formula. "That's still a proven formula that people like, and it's a mistake to [discount that]. As long as people are buying it, it means they're enjoying it," he declared. "If they buy the next Call of Duty, it's because they loved the last one and they want more of it. So I am pretty down on pe... (more)

F.E.A.R 3 online passes screwed up for PS3 version

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2241 days, 7 hours, 15 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 29, 2011 8:18:22 AM GMT
The "online pass" system was designed to combat used sales and make money from those who buy secondhand games. Except in the case of F.E.A.R 3, in which Warner Bros. apparently got so excited and giddy over the idea of the system that it forgot one important detail -- giving players the ability to buy a pass if they get a used copy. Next for Team Fortress 2: Free-to-play status

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2246 days, 8 hours, 10 minutes ago
Friday, June 24, 2011 7:23:11 AM GMT
For the Über Update festivities, Valve set up Team Fortress 2 with week-long free status. I thought this was a smart idea, but not entirely unexpected, since Valve has a history of pulling such stunts. Making the full game free, forever? Yeah, that's a bit more ballsy -- and it's apparently what the company is doing. (more)

At Nintendo's developer roundtable this evening, Ubisoft announced a new game for Wii U by the name of Killer Freaks From Outer Space, currently scheduled for 2012. I know what you're thinking based on the name, but it actually seems potentially cool, at least in terms of subject matter. (more)

Have a PS3 Brink patch to go with your PSN restoration

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2284 days, 8 hours, 43 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 17, 2011 6:50:08 AM GMT
Splash Damage has celebrated the return of the PlayStation Network by releasing a lovely patch for your copy of Brink. I'm sure all thirty PS3 Brink players will be thrilled with the news. The fix is, essentially, the same as the one the Xbox 360 received. Chiefly, it forces teams to only have four human players per side, unless they choose the new "Big Teams" option. Splash Damage said it will "closely monitor" the performance of the game on the PlayStation Network. (more)

Review: Section 8: Prejudice

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2310 days, 5 hours, 47 minutes ago
Thursday, April 21, 2011 9:46:33 AM GMT
The original Section 8 didn't exactly set the world aflame. Its focus on pure online gameplay was to its detriment, due to the fact that not many people were actually playing it. By and large, it was a noble effort and a decent game, albeit one that seemed doomed to slip into obscurity. (more)

Review: Sanctum

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2316 days, 8 hours, 50 minutes ago

The tower defense genre recently got a nice boost in novelty with the release of Anomaly: Warzone Earth, which turned the genre on its head, and now we have Sanctum; a game that puts the player inside tower defense. Other than that both games involve towers though, they are really nothing alike. (more)

Review: Killzone 3

posted by adminadmin 2367 days, 8 hours, 59 minutes ago

Halo and Call of Duty are often held up as the twin peaks of online first-person-shooters. Meanwhile Killzone is regularly overlooked or outright disregarded, and that's a remarkable shame, since Guerrilla's efforts with Killzone 2 led to perhaps one of the most vivid and powerful shooters on the market. Bulletstorm PC requires persistent Internet (update)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2390 days, 8 hours, 24 minutes ago

Fans of PC DRM have something to celebrate today, with news that Bulletstorm will demand a constant online connection in order to be played. More like Bullshitstorm, right guys? It seems Electronic Arts is going to "pull an Ubisoft" while "protecting" People Can Fly's ludicrous shooter from common thieves. The news comes from EA's own product disclosure page, where it states, "PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY." (more)

Homefront dev: Multiplayer is critical to product success

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2442 days, 6 hours, 58 minutes ago
Friday, December 10, 2010 8:34:53 AM GMT
Homefront's "speculative future" narrative about a Korea-occupied America is interesting, but with a heavy focus on multiplayer, there's always the risk of the story campaign falling by the wayside. In speaking with Kaos Studios' Dave Votypka, we asked just how much effort is being put into both sections of the game. (more)

PC shooter fans have always crowed about how much more precise playing first-person games can be playing with a mouse and keyboard rather than a controller. Point at a dude, click, dude dies. Simple, right? Apparently not so, for many young console bucks raised suckling the twin sticks. (more)

Last month, I was fortunate to be in THQ's brand new (and massive) new development studio, THQ Montreal. It's a beautiful place, with all sorts of snazzy offerings for the future Quebecois employees. However, while that's all grand and good, THQ actually had something they wanted to show off: the single player for Homefront, their upcoming first person shooter due next spring. (more)
