Serious Sam 3 recently received Steam Workshop support, Croteam and Devolver Digital announced. The update gave players the ability to use community-made weapons, character skins, maps and gameplay mods, and the option to subscribe to modders that use the Serious Editor. (more)

Zynga is laying off 5 percent of its full-time workforce, closing its Boston studio and significantly reducing staff at its Austin studio, CEO and founder Mark Pincus writes in a letter to employees. Zynga is proposing closures of its Japan and UK studios, retiring 13 older games and "significantly reducing" its investment in The Ville. (more)

Entire cities of players and NPCs in World of Warcraft are being wiped out in a solitary blow, WoW Insider reports. The death traps began on European servers, in the cities of Ogrimmar and Stormwind, and have since spread to Tarren Mill, Ragnaros, Draenor, Twisting Nether and other realms, and include US servers, according to player reports. The update also brings with it two new features, the first of which replaces the current competitive matchmaking system, "join in progress," with a queued matchmaking mode. Somewhere between checkers and chess, the contemporary turn-based strategy game resides. Advance Wars, X-Com, Heroes of Might & Magic, and Fire Emblem are known by many, loved by some, and mastered by very few. Their intricate systems are simple and colorful enough on the surface to attract a following, but none are quite as pretty as The Banner Saga: A great board game that never existed brought to life within the milieu of a gorgeous animated fantasy that never existed. UKIE, a trade group for the entertainment industry in the UK, joined UK gaming trade association TIGA in calling for a tax relief flat rate of 30 percent across the industry, in the hopes of stimulating the UK's game development business. In March, UK chancellor George Osborne pledged to "turn Britain into Europe's technology centre, starting with digital content," by extending the country's film tax breaks to the TV, animation and gaming industries.
