Angry Birds catapulting to Facebook on Valentine's Day

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1974 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:50:34 AM GMT
Mirroring the plans of every bitter, lonely soul the world over, Rovio will be filling Facebook with anger come Valentine's Day. Granted, Rovio's February 14 release of Angry Birds for the social-networking site will be quite a bit different from the vitriolic bile we'll be spewing as a projection of our own debilitating loneliness, but both activities do involve throwing things and impassioned rants about how things didn't go as planned. Minecraft hits 20 million registered users

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1985 days, 23 hours, 17 minutes ago
Sunday, January 15, 2012 11:03:32 AM GMT
Mojang mastermind Notch has tweeted that Minecraft has reached the 20 million user milestone, and that if each user weighed 154 pounds, that Minecraft's total player base would equal 25 percent of the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It's an interesting statistic, if somewhat of a stretch, only because it got us thinking about other ways to arbitrarily compartmentalize that sort of information. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1987 days, 23 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:41:36 AM GMT
EA's move into the freemium market appears to be working, with the company boasting yesterday that it now has a total of 25 million registered players across all Play4Free titles. Of course, that number is far less impressive if those people aren't actively playing, but that hasn't stopped EA from patting itself on the back and calling the number a "remarkable achievement." For those keeping score at home, that's 25 million registered players combined in Battlefield Heroes, Need for Speed World, Battlefi... (more)

The video-game industry is trying to find the balance between casual and hardcore gaming, with freemium, social-networking titles leading the casual sphere. A new development company established by former Activision employees Dusty Welch and Chris Archer, U4ia, plans to bridge the gap and make freemium a staple of hardcore titles, as well. Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2108 days, 6 hours, 34 minutes ago
Thursday, September 15, 2011 3:47:02 AM GMT
Tokyo Game Show 2011 is officially on, as today's keynote -- delivered by Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada -- kicked things off. But despite Mr. Wada's position at the JRPG giant, he's here speaking as the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Software Association, which means he had some pretty high level content to get through in his speech. To be extra clear, his keynote is named, "The Nature of the Industry Revolution of Games," so, pretty high level stuff. (more)

After being forced to pay off the door man to get into Apple's electronics recycling party for years now, PCs are finally getting in for free -- VIP style. Apple has revised its Reuse and Recycling Program and opened the gates to sheep from another shepherd's flock. The new rules are quite a departure from past protocol, which charged PC users 30 bones to recycle non-Apple computers and displays (more)

Kerberos, the hound from Hades that lent its name to an MIT-developed network authentication protocol, is often visualized as having three heads. But if dogs can have multiple heads, why can't other technology species? Many of the features in Lion have impact for different kinds of users, and the value users see in them may well depend on which face they tend to view. (more)

Apple OS X Lion (10.7) review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2164 days, 56 minutes ago

Never one to shy away from dramatic hyperbole, Steve Jobs declared ours a "post-PC world" about this time last year, acknowledging a move away from personal computers as smartphones and tablets become even more ubiquitous. And while Jobs might happily look on as iPhones and iPads become our primarily tie to the outside world, the question remains: what happens to the PC during this grand transition? To a large extent, the answer lies in the OS, which brings us to OS X Lion. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome ... (more)

How will it work? Every user will be able to have "up to five games available for free on their account at any time with the capability to add additional games." What does that even mean? How do you have only up to five games and then add more than... actually screw it. It's probably something about paying extra, and you're not reading this because you want to pay extra. (more)

E3 2011: The big schedule

The big week is almost upon us, folks: E3 2011. And if this week is any indication of days to come, we'll have a constant flow of news mainlined directly from Los Angeles to your think meat. With that in mind, there are a handful of focal points throughout the week that will assuredly strike you as high priority, and as such, we thought a roadmap guiding you to those particular moments -- whether you're in Shibuya, or Queens, or anywhere else for that matter -- would be of particular use. Blizzard carves out new info on Diablo 3 runestones

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2216 days, 35 minutes ago
Monday, May 30, 2011 9:46:03 AM GMT
It's been a long time since we've heard much on the new rune system in Diablo 3. For those who have forgotten -- it's been a while since BlizzCon 2008, after all -- Diablo 3 players can modify every class skill with a runestone. In the early version of the system, runestones came in fairly self-explanatory flavors. A multistrike rune, for instance, would add extra hits to a given skill. (more)
