E3: Retro City Rampage in my hands! My dreams came true!

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1843 days, 12 hours, 37 minutes ago
Monday, June 11, 2012 6:35:49 AM GMT
The final game I checked out at E3 was the PS Vita port of Retro City Rampage, the title I was most looking forward to playing. With the copious amounts of hands-on previews and the frustration of its seemingly endless development, I have been beyond antsy. It was supposed to come out last month! (more)

Monolith Productions has one of the most varied histories in video game development. The studio first cut its teeth on first-person shooters, finding a cult hit in the popular No One Lives Forever series. Then, it was a vast experiment with The Matrix Online, before coming back to shooters with the Fear and Condemned series of games. And now, the company's trying to reinvent itself yet again with two licensed downloadable titles for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment: first Gotham City Imposters from... (more)

The bizarre-looking Tokyo Jungle, rather surprisingly, will be leaving Japan. As you probably heard, the title is going to release on PlayStation Network in Europe. It's also coming to North America, Joystiq has confirmed with Sony VP of product development and worldwide studios Scott Rohde. (more)

Hunting down the secret Tokyo Jungle demo at E3

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1845 days, 12 hours, 51 minutes ago

One of my goals for E3 this year was to find out if Tokyo Jungle was on the show floor and play it. For the whole show, I heard reports that it was playable, but couldn't find it on the floor. I had Sony reps escort me around the company's giant booth to no avail. (more)

PSP gets its own homebrew online gaming network, outweighs Sony's own efforts (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1853 days, 9 hours, 40 minutes ago

Sony made much ado of the PSP's position as one of the first online gaming consoles, but unless your idea of online play involves Skype calls, there hasn't been a lot to go on since 2004. Team PRO is addressing that deficit through Prometheus, a completely community-driven rival to PSN. The hack lets PSP games with support for ad hoc WiFi play go online by wrapping the normal local-only multiplayer in an emulator library that broadcasts to other Prometheus players. (more)

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) titles have seen an enormous surge in popularity in recent years, and for good reason, but to date they've been restricted to the PC. These highly skill-based, competitive games offer the joy of killing players and computer-controlled enemies, with that one-more-round addictive quality when it either goes well, or when you demand satisfaction after a loss. Review: Skullgirls

Skullgirls is a downloadable fighting game in a world brimming with big-budget, disc-based games from the same genre. Holding it to the same standards might seem unfair, but expectations from fighting game players are the same regardless of how the game is delivered. That being said, Skullgirls nails some aspects that the big names seem to have overlooked while simultaneously overlooking others (more)

Call it a cliché, but it’d be in bad critical taste not to bring up that indie heavyweight when evaluating puzzle platformers. It’s the benchmark of the genre, one that games like Limbo and P.B. Winterbottom have come close to meeting but can never quite stand shoulder-to-shoulder with. (more)
