PlayStation 3 sells 3.9 million units during the holidays (and other sales data)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2079 days, 1 hour, 43 minutes ago
Wednesday, January 11, 2012 9:29:03 AM GMT
This holiday season has been kind to Sony, the company revealed today, specifically the PlayStation line of gaming consoles. The PS3 was the front-runner for Sony's parade of prosperity, invading over 3.9 million homes during the company's unspecified "holiday sales season" worldwide. On paper, it's impressive, but not quite as much when compared to the competition -- the Xbox 360 managed to outperform the PS3, selling 10 million consoles since the last tally back in late October. After introducing the PS Vita early in December, the company managed to shift about 500,000 units in its own backyard, while ageing predecessor, the PSP, continued to sell 1.6 million units worldwide. Japanese hardware sales, November 7 - 13: SOPA edition | Joystiq

We like to poke fun around here, but the Stop Online Piracy Act is actually pretty serious business. As creative people ourselves, we're all for protecting intellectual property rights and for ensuring that those who make things for a living are able to live off what they make. What we're not okay with is the asinine notion that removing everything associated with ocean-based mercenaries from the Internet will somehow stop people from stealing software and movies. It makes zero sense. (more)

Got your grain of salt ready? Good! Survey and statistical analysis firm Cowen and Company has published the results of a survey that suggests "casual" gamer interest in dedicated handheld gaming systems has declined by 29 percent over the last 5 years. 37 percent of people polled play games on a dedicated device, while 52 percent primarily use their phones. After the PSN hack, we recommended buying PSN games straight from Amazon, or at least adding funds to your PSN "wallet" by buying codes there, to avoid getting your credit card involved with Sony's system. That's no longer our recommendation -- because the PSN games and codes are gone. (more)

European PSN releases for October 19: Rocketbirds, Okabu and The Run demo

What level of adorability are you looking for in your European PSN purchase this week? A significant amount? We suggest Okabu -- it stars things called "cloud whales," which possess a cuteness unrivaled by just about everything else on the planet. Average cuteness? How about Rocketbirds? Sure, the fowl therein are all about soaring through the air and murdering each other, but ... c'mon, birds are cute, right? (more)

Sony is defenseless against the fall of the euro

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2179 days, 5 hours, 2 minutes ago

Sony said it expects a "huge impact" on earnings as the euro declines -- many of Sony's exports are to European countries, some of which are on the edge of defaulting on an international loan. The euro currently sits at a decade-low against the yen, and as Sony generally doesn't buy from Europe, it doesn't have a defense against the euro's descent, Sony corporate treasurer Hiroshi Kurihara told Bloomberg. Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds

Tokyo Game Show 2011 is officially on, as today's keynote -- delivered by Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada -- kicked things off. But despite Mr. Wada's position at the JRPG giant, he's here speaking as the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Software Association, which means he had some pretty high level content to get through in his speech. To be extra clear, his keynote is named, "The Nature of the Industry Revolution of Games," so, pretty high level stuff. (more)

Then again, they're probably not surprised, as the loudmouth on the cover of FIFA Soccer 12 is just the latest in a string of scream-centric pieces of EA Sports cover art. (more)

GamePro VP talks about the shift to quarterly mags

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2237 days, 4 hours, 32 minutes ago
Saturday, August 06, 2011 6:39:33 AM GMT
Last week, GamePro shocked the industry when the magazine mainstay announced it was changing over to a quarterly format. Julian Rignall, vice president of GamePro media, recently explained the decision to Gamasutra. In a market with dwindling circulation, Rignall believes there's still a place for print. According to the executive, the choice is either to become incredibly cheap and "disposable" or, as GamePro plans to do, become a more expensive, premium product. (more)
