Man Caught Using Cell Phone Jammer on Bus

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2028 days, 15 hours, 42 minutes ago
Monday, March 05, 2012 7:41:07 AM GMT
No doubt we've all been in a situation where someone is talking loudly on their cell phone with little regard for those around them. But beyond throwing the offending person the filthiest look you can afford, or perhaps even asking them to keep their voice down, there's not a whole lot that can be done. After all, it's a free country, right? (more)

Fujitsu couldn't help but catch my eye this year. While everyone was talking up performance, the Japanese firm had a long string of smartphones and tablets operating while they were submerged under water. To be clear, these are not dummy devices. They are fully functioning and are purposely designed to be waterproof/dustproof. (more)

The NSA decided it wanted to have its own go at producing a secure Android smartphone that could encrypt communications to levels necessary for national security. Project "Fishbowl" constructed 100 handsets from off-the-shelf components that were secure enough that staffers could use them without speaking in code. All conversations are conducted across an IPsec (more)

Microsoft Launches 'Smoked by Windows Phone' Campaign

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2037 days, 13 hours, 48 minutes ago
Saturday, February 25, 2012 9:35:13 AM GMT
If you can cast your mind back as far as CES in January, you might remember Microsoft's little Windows Phone marketing stunt that saw the company challenge smartphone owners to a little cell phone quick draw. The idea was to race two phones, one Windows Phone and the other not, and see which of them could perform a specific task the fastest. Microsoft was offering $100 to anyone who could beat a Windows Phone. The losers? They had to go on camera and admit that their phone "got smoked by a Windows Phone." (more)

Apple Asks Fair Labor Association for Factory Inspections

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2048 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:37:12 AM GMT
Apple has seen significant pressure from labor rights groups and customers over the treatment of staff manning the factories where the iPhone and iPad are built. Earlier this year, the New York Times ran a rather sobering piece on the general business surrounding the China-based manufacturing facilities employed by Apple and many other consumer electronic and computer companies. In late January, Tim Cook penned a letter to the Apple team insisting that his company takes the welfare of its workers very se... (more)

Smartphones are a wonderful invention that have enriched our lives and made everyday tasks more manageable. However, a knock-on effect of our reliance on these smartphones is that they pretty much know everything about us. So, really, it shouldn't surprise that divorce lawyers are apparently seeing more and more cases where the evidence used was taken from a smartphone. (more)

HP: webOS Will Be Better Than Android, iOS

Apple Sued Over Accelerometer and Bubble Level

Calibrait, LLC, a company with no history and apparently has been founded with the sole purpose to acquire a patent and sue for patent infringement, claims that Apple directly and indirectly infringe its patent 7,447,265 by offering accelerometers in its mobile devices as well as software that turn iPods, iPads and iPhones into electronic alignment devices. Calibrait also alleges that Apple engages in indirect infringement by enabling others to violate Calibrait's patent. (more)

Back in December 2011, Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam said that 2012 will likely bring a shared data plan to Verizon Wireless so that customers with multiple lines won't have to juggle multiple data packages. Like shared minutes, a shared data plan would provide a bulk amount of data per month for one set fee for family members to share. (more)
