Activision Defends GoldenEye Wii Exclusivity

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2552 days, 23 hours, 28 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:32:00 AM GMT
Gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter said during E3 2010 that Activision's remake of GoldenEye: 007 would do better on the Xbox 360 than the Nintendo Wii. To be more specific, he said that the game would have a "better chance" if developed by Rare--the team behind the original Nintendo 64 classic--for the Microsoft console than the Eurocom rehash slated for the less-endowed Wii. Don't Use The Word 'Shmup' Around The Creators Of Ikaruga And Sin & Punishment

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2555 days, 22 hours, 44 minutes ago

Because, believe it or not, the people who designed some of the world's best scrolling shoot 'em ups, including Ikaruga, Gradius V and Radiant Silvergun, claim to have never seen the abbreviated term "shmup" used to describe their games before. So says Masato Maegawa, president of Treasure and producer on the company's latest bullet-filled video game, SIn & Punishment: Star Successor for Wii. We were curious if they use the shortened description internally and this was their response. (more)

Maybe Marvel vs Capcom 3 on the Wii?

Hell, why not. Well, it's not up to me. But I bet Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma, the producer of Marvel vs Capcom 3, has a say. And he says it's possible. (more)

Destructoid Discusses: 3D at E3 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2555 days, 23 hours, 3 minutes ago
Friday, June 25, 2010 7:57:45 AM GMT
Maybe two-thirds of what we saw at E3 involved 3D technology. Hell, Sony even had us wearing 3D glasses at their press conference! There was 3D racing, 3D platforming, 3D shooting and even 3D portables with "3D" in the name. Following this year's also 3D-heavy Consumer Electronics Show, it seems that the gaming world is getting the goofy glasses, like it or not. (more)

Nintendo's Fils-Aime promises 'commitment' to improve online experience

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2556 days, 23 hours, 12 minutes ago

Nintendo enjoys breaking conventions. Disruptive ideas have been part of the company's heritage, and while some innovations set industry standards -- from the D-Pad to motion controls -- other ideas seem different for the sake of being unique. Case in point: Nintendo's implementation of online in both the Wii and DS. In an interview with IndustryGamers, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted that the company has shortcomings in that arena. "The online ... or let me state it more broadly,... Dance Central could bust a move on PS3, but Wii put in a corner

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2556 days, 23 hours, 14 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:46:31 AM GMT
Nobody puts the Wii in a corner, except Harmonix that is! Speaking to Kotaku, Harmonix's Alex Rigopulos intimated that the company's upcoming Kinect title, Dance Central, might raise the roof on PS3. Should the game shake its groove thing on PS3, it will be doing so with the help of PlayStation Move. The Wii, unfortunately, will have to sit this dance out, as Rigopulos noted that its motion tracking capabilities aren't up to snuff. (more)

E3 10: Treading in the Sea of Chaos with Deadliest Catch

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2559 days, 22 hours, 24 minutes ago

I did not realize at the time how many games based on television shows I saw at this week's E3. I probably only scratched the surface, for that matter, but it seems like a lot. Deadliest Catch: Sea of Chaos is another such game. The television show, which I'm really only aware of through hearsay and passing glances, it's about fishing for crabs, right? That's what the upcoming game is all about. Crab fishing. Is there a collection of minigames in there that are representative of the act? Yeah, you pret... (more)

Preview: Ivy the Kiwi?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2559 days, 22 hours, 27 minutes ago

For some reason, I thought of Prope's Ivy the Kiwi? as a mellow title, a generally relaxing and lightweight game -- at least that's what I thought before actually playing the game. To my surprise, I was presented with a challenging, often chaotic arcade game instead of a frothy, low-impact diversion. It's just the kind of game I seek out, actually -- a game whose challenge comes from mastering a single, unique gameplay mechanic. (more)

Preview: Batman: The Brave and the Bold

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2559 days, 22 hours, 36 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:23:54 AM GMT
Despite starring the same character, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and last year's Batman: Arkham Asylum are worlds apart. Rocksteady's game used Unreal technology to realistically render a Grim & Gritty(tm) Gotham in which Batman has to rely on his detective skills and the element of surprise to survive every encounter. The Brave and the Bold, however, is brightly colored and brimming with cartoon flourishes, and stars a Batman who punches thugs with abandon in broad daylight. (more)

Our hands-on preview of High Voltage Games' The Grinder brought about a fairly surreal statement on our part. A brief explanation: Players pick up a number of throwable secondary weapons, including your basic frag grenades, as well as weirder fare, such as baby dolls which monsters will swarm on when dropped. Of course, once we'd grabbed a number of these pickups, a completely logical question came to mind (more)

Darn that Darth Vader -- sure, he's a Sith Lord who betrayed his master, will blow up a planet without a second thought, and even threatens to kill his own soldiers, but honestly, you just can't trust the guy. This brand new E3 trailer from LucasArts for Force Unleashed 2 shows the game's protagonist Starkiller getting betrayed by ol' helmethead yet again, and then lightsaber slicing and dicing his way out of a whole heap of space trouble. Looksley's Line Up, also known as "that game everyone thought was a 3DS demo," arrives in Europe today under the title Tales in a Box: Hidden shapes in perspective! If your interests lie less in the uncomfortably futuristic, and more in the vintage, Final Fantasy II is available on Virtual Console. This is the one we know now as Final Fantasy IV. Or perhaps more specifically, what they're looking forward to. What did they say? You'll never know until you hit the jump! (more)

Pre-E3: Harmonix/MTV partner with Fender on guitar/controller hybrid

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2570 days, 1 hour, 28 minutes ago

Fender, Harmonix, and MTV Games have partnered on an upcoming guitar/controller hybrid that's exactly what it sounds like -- a guitar controller with six real guitar strings that you can also use as a game controller. Modeled after the Fender Stratocaster, the controller features tech built into the neck and fingerboard of the guitar, making it able to read finger positions in real time. The peripheral will also transfer data for each of the guitar's six strings. Or, just plug the guitar into a standard ... (more)

Hands-on: Rock Band 3

Yes, there is a keytar peripheral (though in the game, it's just called "keys"). Yes, there is a Rock Band Pro mode, complete with its own 150-button guitar, that's more complicated than anything you've ever seen a plastic instrument do. Yes, a full band now consists of seven different instruments: two guitars, three vocalists (harmonies included, thanks to The Beatles), drums and a keyboard. But all of that stuff already reported by USA Today isn't what makes Rock Band 3 worthy of a plus one to the vers... (more)

Report: New GoldenEye coming in November, to be revealed at E3

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2574 days, 22 hours, 25 minutes ago

More evidence to support the circulating rumors of a GoldenEye remake surfaced this past week. The most convincing comes from Eurogamer, which reports that a source has confirmed Activision is working on a revamped version of the classic Nintendo 64 shooter for the Wii and DS to be released this November. The game is supposedly being developed by n-Space and Eurocom, the latter of which created the N64 version of The World is Not Enough. The source also mentioned the publisher will showcase the title for... (more)
