Hudson name will live on after Konami takeover

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1952 days, 17 hours, 35 minutes ago

We're still not sure if Konami will take the Hudson bee out back and put two tiny bullets into its brain, Old Yeller style, but Konami at least plans to keep the Hudson name around. According to a notice spotted on the company's site by Andriasang, Hudson branded products and services will continue to be developed post-acquisition. (more)

The top two spots in Japan's 2011 list of best-selling games are taken by a pair of Nintendo 3DS games: Mario Kart 7, with more than 1.6 million sold, and Super Mario 3D Land with more than 1.08 million sold. In third is Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri-G for 3DS, followed by 27 more titles for 3DS, DS PSP, Wii and PS3. These include From Software's Dark Souls and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2. (more)

Super Mario Bros. Crossover gets a makeover in Version 2.0

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1959 days, 15 hours, 51 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 9:32:50 AM GMT
The 2.0 update for Super Mario Bros. Crossover, coming in Q1 2012, gives the homemade blend-em-up a bit more flash and a wider spectrum of nostalgia. And the new SNES and Gameboy visuals don't detract from the game's real purpose, which is to destroy that aloof minion Lakitu in new and interesting ways. (more)

December NPD: MW3, Just Dance 3 and Skyrim lead an overall down month

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1963 days, 14 hours, 40 minutes ago

The industry as a whole still managed to bang out $3.99 billion in combined new sales of hardware, physical software and accessories between November 27 and December 31, 2011. This is, however, a 21 percent drop year-over-year, as the industry pulled down a combined $5.07 billion during the same period in 2010. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1966 days, 15 hours, 17 minutes ago

GameStop reported sales for the nine weeks ending December 31, 2011. In that period, it achieved sales of $3.02 billion, which, on the surface, is a repeat of last year's number. Moving down the decimal point, the company reported $3,018.1 million in 2010 (itself a record) and $3,019.1 in 2011 -- a new record by a million dollars. (more)

Japanese hardware sales, November 7 - 13: SOPA edition | Joystiq

We like to poke fun around here, but the Stop Online Piracy Act is actually pretty serious business. As creative people ourselves, we're all for protecting intellectual property rights and for ensuring that those who make things for a living are able to live off what they make. What we're not okay with is the asinine notion that removing everything associated with ocean-based mercenaries from the Internet will somehow stop people from stealing software and movies. It makes zero sense. (more)

Review: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2016 days, 16 hours, 37 minutes ago
Monday, November 21, 2011 8:47:04 AM GMT
Instead, the console launched with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a game that sent all the wrong messages to third parties on how to create a successful Wii game. Twilight Princess sometimes utilized the Wii Remote in cool ways (like pointer aiming) but also tacked on motion control in unnecessary ways (like sword swinging), giving the illusion of added functionality while adding little to the gameplay. The game looked great by GameCube-era standards but did nothing to exploit the increased powe... (more)

Walmart selling Limited Edition Blue Wii for $99.96 on Black Friday

No, you aren't "losing" that thing up top -- Walmart will indeed be bringing those limited edition blue Wiis to the US of A starting this Thursday, and better still, it'll be hawking 'em for just $99.96 apiece. If you'll recall, the powder blue variants of Nintendo's newest home console were previously reserved for other sections of the globe, but a new spot that just aired on CBS' broadcast of the Titans vs. Falcons has confirmed that it'll be on sale within a matter of days for those lucky enough to sn... Skyward Sword not originally destined for motion control

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2048 days, 20 hours, 53 minutes ago

In an extremely interesting, though not so surprising revelation from the latest Iwata Asks it seems The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was initially intended to sport a purely button-based control scheme. Apparently series producer Eiji Aonuma had no intention of building the title around the Wii's MotionPlus, but was later inspired by the fencing event in Wii Sports Resort. It's a curious bit of information. My inner cynic is curious as to why MotionPlus wasn't in the plans from the start. (more)

If you can't tell I know next to nothing about NCIS, but the game's 4 cases will be written by the original writers, so at least somebody will know what's what. (more)

Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds

Tokyo Game Show 2011 is officially on, as today's keynote -- delivered by Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada -- kicked things off. But despite Mr. Wada's position at the JRPG giant, he's here speaking as the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Software Association, which means he had some pretty high level content to get through in his speech. To be extra clear, his keynote is named, "The Nature of the Industry Revolution of Games," so, pretty high level stuff. (more)

A screaming man and two dudes who look -- well, they look just like we'd imagine two guys standing next to a screaming man would look: uncomfortable. Then again, they're probably not surprised, as the loudmouth on the cover of FIFA Soccer 12 is just the latest in a string of scream-centric pieces of EA Sports cover art. (more)

GamePro VP talks about the shift to quarterly mags

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2123 days, 18 hours, 45 minutes ago
Saturday, August 06, 2011 6:39:33 AM GMT
Last week, GamePro shocked the industry when the magazine mainstay announced it was changing over to a quarterly format. Julian Rignall, vice president of GamePro media, recently explained the decision to Gamasutra. In a market with dwindling circulation, Rignall believes there's still a place for print. According to the executive, the choice is either to become incredibly cheap and "disposable" or, as GamePro plans to do, become a more expensive, premium product. (more)

Nintendo of America trademarks The Last Story

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2144 days, 16 hours, 13 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:11:08 AM GMT
Nintendo of America has filed a trademark for The Last Story, which just so happens to be the name of the Mistwalker RPG that it refuses to localize. The trademark was filed on January 13, 2010, but only issued a few days ago, hence why we're now finding out about it. It's worth noting that Nintendo of America, like any company, enjoys filing trademarks for anything regardless of its intent to use them. Nevertheless, fans are taking it as a good sign. (more)

Electronic Arts shutting down online for older games

EA is performing a cull of online components for a number of older titles, including entries in the Battlefield, Need for Speed and Medal of Honor series. The most tragic shutdown is, of course, Army of Two. The dedicated co-op community for that game is going to be devastated. (more)

Ok, So Maybe Nintendo is ''Investigating'' Phones

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2151 days, 13 hours, 5 minutes ago

Nintendo is apparently playing mind games with consumers. Just days ago, news surfaced that a Pokémon game was heading to the iOS and Android platforms this summer. Nintendo only owns 32-percent of the Pokémon franchise, meaning that The Pokémon Company / Game Freak has the right to bring its pocket monsters to any platform it chooses. But given that Pokémon titles usually reside on Nintendo platforms. (more)

John Carmack Gives Thumbs Up for Wii U

In a recent interview with IndustryGamers, id Software technical director John Carmack seemingly gave a thumbs up for the Nintendo Wii U console. In fact, he said it should be a "slam dunk" in bringing the id Tech 5 engine to the upcoming platform. But don't get your hopes up just yet – Wii U support isn't exactly an official deal until Carmack gets his hands on an actual unit. (more)
