Hydrophobia's 'Challenge Rooms' test powers slated for its sequel

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2729 days, 1 hour, 43 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:40:49 AM GMT
Our preview of Hydrophobia from E3 2010 covered what we saw in the first installment of the planned trilogy; however, if you want an idea of what to expect in the next installment, we got a better idea by checking out the game's "Challenge Rooms," which unlock only after the player finishes the main campaign. What's tucked after the break may be considered spoiler-ish, so click on through if you're willing to take the plunge. (more)

Halo: The Fall of Reach comic adaptation coming from Marvel

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2729 days, 1 hour, 45 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:39:03 AM GMT
Marvel and 343 Industries have announced a new comic adaptation of the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach (not to be confused with the upcoming re-issue of the novel itself). The comic will be written by Brian Reed, who's work has worked in both comics and games. The art will be drawn by Felix Ruiz. For those unfamiliar with The Fall of Reach, the book covers events that took place before the original Halo game, including the creation of the Spartan II project and its indoctrination of John 117, better known ... I'll be honest with you. I had no idea who City Interactive was, and when I saw I had an appointment with this company, I was all, "what the fck is this sht?" Nevertheless, I am a good person so I made my way over there to check out Sniper: Ghost Warrior. (more)

The evil genius of Portal 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 37 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:47:04 AM GMT
Portal 2 is going to be amazing. Do you know how I know this? Because a mere fifteen minute presentation of the game had a room full of cynical, jaded, miserable game "journalists" laughing out loud. That's what Portal is all about as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the puzzles are fantastic, the central gimmick is unique, but it's the comedy that really sets Portal apart. (more)

E3 10: Hands-on Nail'd

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 44 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:40:09 AM GMT
I typically don't get along with "realistic" racing games, but I'll love any good racer that does something a little over-the-top. This is why I am somewhat drawn to Nail'd, a new bike racing game from Southpeak Interactive. It trades in realistic physics for sheer speed, and surprisingly it works out quite well. Read on for some hands-on impressions of Nail'd. (more)

E3 10: Treading in the Sea of Chaos with Deadliest Catch

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 48 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:36:27 AM GMT
I did not realize at the time how many games based on television shows I saw at this week's E3. I probably only scratched the surface, for that matter, but it seems like a lot. Deadliest Catch: Sea of Chaos is another such game. The television show, which I'm really only aware of through hearsay and passing glances, it's about fishing for crabs, right? That's what the upcoming game is all about. Crab fishing. Is there a collection of minigames in there that are representative of the act? Yeah, you pret... (more)

Preview: Mafia 2 (and Mafia 2 3D)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 49 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:35:42 AM GMT
Mafia 2 feels, from the demo we played, like it could just as easily be called Grand Theft Auto: Godfather. If that's what you're looking for from the mob-o-rama sequel, then celebrate by throwing someone off a pier with cement shoes. It's actually pretty hard to note anything unexpected or different in the Mafia 2 demo. Almost everything you'd expect from a game that borrows heavily from the GTA IV template is there, both the good and the bad. (more)

Preview: Mortal Kombat

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 52 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:32:11 AM GMT
While E3 attendees file out of a darkened room after a demonstration of the new Mortal Kombat, series co-creator Ed Boon is approached by a pair of enthusiastic fans. He gladly gives them a few autographs, and his face lights up in surprise when he learns that they've grown enamored with the fighting franchise in their 18 years of existence -- despite being born well after its inception. Has Mortal Kombat really been around for almost 20 years? (more)

Preview: Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2732 days, 54 minutes ago

This week at E3, Disney was showing off its latest Pirates of the Caribbean game, with nary a movie in sight. Armada of the Damned is being developed by Propaganda Games, creators of the most recent Turok titles, and it's ambitious: An open-world action-RPG with a morality system, based on the popular license but not on any specific movie. The Xbox Live Arcade versions of both Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure were playable at Sega's booth, and both still look great, even ten-plus years after their release. However, each game has one issue that keeps the XBLA (and PSN) version from absolute perfection. (more)

E3 10: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood single-player story

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2735 days, 1 hour, 2 minutes ago

Last night, you saw a sample of the multiplayer component in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. When Chad played it himself, he wasn't so hot on it, but he really enjoyed the single-player stuff that he checked out on the E3 show floor. Now you can get a taste of the game's single-player story yourself -- above, you can find a seven-and-a-half-minute cut of gameplay/cutscenes narrated by Associate Producer Jean-François Boivin (it's the same thing that Ubisoft showed as a live demo at its press conference on... Eric Chahi's Project Dust heading to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

Remember when we got all excited about Eric Chahi's upcoming game, Project Dust (working title), when it was revealed at Ubisoft's press conference today? Well, that excitement is no longer exclusive to us -- we've embedded the premiere trailer after the break. It's full of masked natives occasionally living their lives and, oh, occasionally being swept off the face of the planet. (more)

Hydrophobia trailer floods our hearts and minds

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2737 days, 13 hours, 39 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 7:45:26 PM GMT
Dark Energy Digital fired off a new trailer for its exceptionally moist episodic action title Hydrophobia earlier today. As always, the water which protagonist Kate is forced to traverse looks wonderful (in a deadly kind of way). We're perplexed, however, by all the fire featured in said video. We're no scientists, but shouldn't that turn the aforementioned water into, well, steam? (more)

E3 10: Halo: Reach introduces space combat

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2737 days, 13 hours, 55 minutes ago

Seriously, watch this. Look how good it looks. Look at how much is going on. So help me Bungie, don't disappoint me again like you did with Halo 3. This video also confirms that space fighting is indeed a thing. You'll be able to control a space ship and pew pew pew at things in space for the first time ever in a Halo game. That's pretty exciting. (more)

E3 10: Have some new H.A.W.X. 2 screens and details

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2737 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 7:16:53 PM GMT
Ubisoft may not have shown off Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2 during their press conference, but they were kind enough to give us some new screenshots and a little bit of information on the game. Like the last screens we got, most of these are just of various planes. There are few shots, however, of what appear to be tactical airstrikes, both at night and during the day. If the terrain looks surprisingly realistic, it's because Ubisoft says they're using actual high-resolution data from GeoEye, a satellite ima... (more)

What the PS3 Needs to Compete with Kinect

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2738 days, 1 hour, 16 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 8:07:50 AM GMT
Project Natal is officially called Kinect, but we don’t really know more than we did before, with the exception of the launch title lineup. What we do know, however, that Microsoft is serious about Kinect (as strange as this thing sounds) and the Xbox 360 is moving closer to general entertainment than ever before. Sony should take the challenge seriously. The PS3 platform needs some adjustment and upgrades. (more)

Netflix for Xbox 360 adds search in November

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2738 days, 1 hour, 26 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 7:58:27 AM GMT
It didn't get a slot during Microsoft's just-concluded Xbox 360 press conference, but the Netflix streaming app will finally add one of the most often requested (and denied) features: the ability to search through the entire Watch Instantly library and add movies to your queue, right from the console. Proudly stating it's the first gaming console to let you update your queue without a computer (Roku does it too, but try playing Gears of War on that) there's no word on any Kinect tie-ins, probably the rea... Kinect, the new Xbox 360, and ESPN: highlights from Microsoft at E3 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2738 days, 1 hour, 30 minutes ago

My, what big showing you have there, Microsoft. We're still recovering from today and yesterday's big Xbox 360 Kinect unveiling party, but let's take a brief trip down short-term memory lane. First, Project Natal became Kinect, unveiled a handful of interesting / guaranteed-to-embarrass uses, and solidified its November release date. Then ESPN3 made an impressive debut on Xbox Live. Finally, the piece de resistance, a slimmed down Xbox 360 250GB that came (almost) out of nowhere and hits retail as soon a... (more)

Xbox 360 Arcade to eventually be replaced by $199 new Xbox 360; data transfer cable will be $20

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2738 days, 1 hour, 33 minutes ago

Liking the form factor, but not the price? You could settle for an existing Xbox 360 Elite, Pro or Arcade, as we hear the introduction of the new Xbox 360 is being accompanied by a $50 price cut on existing units, but if your heart's set on that glossy black, there's a cheaper Stealthbox coming down the pike eventually. GameSpot reports a slim Xbox 360 Arcade successor will appear after the now-discontinued SKUs sell out for the same $200 as before. Not exactly surprising, but it's always nice to know. (more)
