Rumor: Xbox 360 @ E3: Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2705 days, 10 hours, 32 minutes ago

Sequel and compilation. That's the words that wouldn't fit into our headline space. This is a very loose rumor at this point, but the optimist in me has me running it anyway. The rumor is that the Xbox 360 will see some epic role-playing game action at E3. First off is a sequel to Valkyrie Profile, coming from Square Enix. Go Fanboy says that it will be shown in video form in Microsoft's E3 opener. Not playable at the show, though. I don't know how they know that. (more)

Buy A Rockstar Game For Kids, You're A Terrible Parent

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2705 days, 10 hours, 50 minutes ago
Sunday, May 23, 2010 7:49:32 AM GMT
Here's a refreshing, if predictable dose of common sense from developers Rockstar, telling the BBC that anyone buying one of their games - like Grand Theft Auto, or Red Dead Redemption - is a "terrible parent". "Our games are not designed for young people", Rockstar's Lazlow Jones tells the Beeb. "If you're a parent and buy one of our games for your child you're a terrible parent. We design games for adults because we're adults. There's a lot of kids games out there that we're not interested in playing.... (more)

His Name's Gus Johnson, and He Gets Fans

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2705 days, 10 hours, 55 minutes ago
Sunday, May 23, 2010 7:44:24 AM GMT
"Gus," I say, "tell me how you feel about the term ‘apeshit.'" "Well, I don't know man," Gus Johnson, the new voice of Madden NFL says with a taken-aback laugh. "I mean, I didn't say that word, did I?" No, he didn't, although the reply is a little revealing - maybe he's thinking he got caught up in the moment and did and doesn't remember? For if there's any sportscaster both capable of saying the word and living up to it on live TV, it's Johnson. (more)

A peek through the downloadable content menu in Alan Wake reveals a listing for the game's second, as yet unannounced episode, "The Writer." "Our second downloadable content pack, 'The Writer,' finds Wake in strange circumstances; now fully aware of the thing that opposes him, he must survive one increasingly nightmarish situation after another." PSA: Backbreaker demo available now for XBL Gold members

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 9 hours, 49 minutes ago

NaturalMotion's Backbreaker isn't only special because it's the first sports videogame ever to use the Euphoria engine. Its simplified, pick-up-and-play control scheme is also notable, and in the tutorial above, you can learn how its passing -- controlled solely by the right analog stick -- works. (In case you missed the tutorial for the running game, you can check it out here.) (more)

NHL 11 to have real-time physics, Canadian Hockey League

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 9 hours, 51 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:48:05 AM GMT
The fall 2010 release of NHL 11 is still far off, but already, EA Sports is putting out bits and pieces of information on the game. Earlier this week, EA Canada updated the franchise's Facebook page with the screenshot you see above: it's a hip check that's meant to show off the new real-time physics engine in NHL 11. As someone who's familiar with the series, I can tell you that hit doesn't look like the canned hip check animation of NHL games past, so it certainly appears promising. (more)

Singularity shows off the Deadlock feature

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 9 hours, 55 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:44:37 AM GMT
Singularity is just full of neat ways to kill people. For example, take a look at the Deadlock feature. It's a ball of energy that slows down anything that gets caught up within it. It also doubles as a defense tool that can slow down enemy fire. Oh, the joys of technology. It is a great aid to us all until the day some evil bastard figures out a way to make a weapon like the one in Singularity. Or even worse, robot fire ants. That would just suck. (more)

Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 10 hours, 14 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:25:05 AM GMT
Although Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar San Diego's long-awaited open-world game, may look nothing like GTA IV, the two easily invite comparison. Like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption is an incredibly powerful, polished sandbox game. But, it also carries many of the same flaws as its Liberty City counterpart. While set in drastically different periods, the similarities between these two games cannot be ignored: from gameplay mechanics to mission design to narrative direction. While not cosmetically apparent, e... (more)

I sat there staring at the screen, unable to believe my aching eyes. Had I had too much to drink, or was this real? The Amazon checkout cart read $49.99, and it was definitely Alan Wake sitting in the basket. That alone didn't really frighten me. What tipped me over the edge was the $10 bonus credit on a future video game purchase. (more)

The Beatles: Rock Band may have been a critical success, but it never achieved the levels of commercial success MTV had hoped for in Europe. MTV general manager Scott Guthrie told MCV that a combination of the bad economy and competition contributed to the game's undesirable performance. (more)

Irrational releases the original BioShock pitch document

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 10 hours, 22 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:17:12 AM GMT
Every once in a while, our very plane of existence will be split into two by a major decision affecting the course of history, creating what scientists refer to as a "parallel universe." Less frequently, a window will open up which lets us catch a quick glimpse into the world of what might have been. Irrational Games threw open just such a window yesterday by releasing the pitch document for BioShock, which was planned to be a very different monster from the game we all know and love. Specifically, a sea... (more)

Rockstar: Bad Parents Buy Our Games for Kids

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 10 hours, 26 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:13:59 AM GMT
Rockstar Games recently came out and spoke against parents who purchase its games for their children. The retaliation comes at the heels of its latest release, Red Dead Redemption, now heading to stores worldwide. Like most of Rockstar's games, Red Dead Redemption is rated "M" for violence, language, drug use, and other adult content. And like the games preceding it, Rockstar will undoubtedly receive flak for the content despite its ratings, even from parents. (more)
