Google adds AT&T billing to Android Market payment options

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2495 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes ago
Thursday, December 23, 2010 9:03:26 AM GMT
Having rolled out to T-Mobile just about a year ago, Google's celebrating the anniversary of its Android Market carrier billing feature in the US by expanding the service to AT&T. Put simply, this means that if you're using an Android device on an AT&T line, you'll no longer need to use a credit card -- you can just bill your purchases straight to your AT&T bill, which is painless... almost too painless, really, if you're the compulsive type. And no, we're not aware of a way to bill a Froyo u... (more)

Andy Rubin: over 300,000 Android phones activated daily

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2508 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes ago
Friday, December 10, 2010 8:27:40 AM GMT
Cast your mind back to the ancient time that was this August and you'll recall Eric Schmidt telling you, with no lack of pride, that 200,000 Android phones were being sold each and every day. Skip past Steve Jobs' snide remarks about what's included in that tally, and fast-forward to today, where Andy Rubin is blowing minds with the latest, very nicely rounded, total: 300,000 daily activations. Well, lucky for you, the PlayStation Phone leaks are coming hard and fast. Here we have another video of the Sony Ericsson Zeus Z1. Aside from proving that this is the real deal (check out the PlayStation app icon ), it confirms that this phone will run Gingerbread, the upcoming build of Google's Android OS, and sport a back-facing camera and LED flash. PlayStation Phone reportedly caught on (very clear) video

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2513 days, 11 hours, 13 minutes ago
Sunday, December 05, 2010 11:32:47 AM GMT
Well, lookie what our amigos at Engadget have stumbled upon: a purported video of the Sony Ericsson ZEUS-Z1 "PlayStation Phone" being handled by a YouTube user by the alias of "xxmajstor." Whoever they are, they show the very PSP Go-esque phone off for upwards of two minutes, sliding it open to reveal the previously reported on game controls, including the "touch strip" that evidently sits in for dual analog sticks. 2011 looks to be the year Sony tackles its mobile gaming competitors head-on with the seemingly imminent release of the PSP2 and the PlayStation Phone. Although Sony has yet to officially confirm the existence of either device, there's been enough chatter and indirect confirmation that both are on the way soon. (more)

Touchscreen phones get psuedo-buttons with Tactile Plus stickers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2525 days, 15 hours, 14 minutes ago
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 7:31:09 AM GMT
It's difficult to execute a Hadouken -- or any special maneuver, for that matter -- on the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV without keeping a constant eye on the on-screen controls. It's a problem that many games on touchscreened smartphones suffer from; fortunately, it's a problem that can be solved with a little outside the box thinking. Why not just add some buttons to your phone using the reusable Tactile+Plus sticker set pictured above? (more)

Still, it's good to know you're not shy when it comes to talking about mobile phone platforms, even if it means backing Google's Android over the smartphone from the company you helped found. (more)

Bootlace lets you install Froyo on your iPhone without a computer

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2536 days, 17 hours, 13 minutes ago
Friday, November 12, 2010 5:32:23 AM GMT
It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. Hit up the source link below for the complete installation instructions -- and insert your own joke h... (more)

Fox.com joins NBC, ABC and CBS by blocking Google TV

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2536 days, 17 hours, 15 minutes ago
Friday, November 12, 2010 5:30:12 AM GMT
Looks like Fox has finally made a decision, following the other major networks, Hulu and several cable channels by opting to block streaming video on its website from Google TV devices. Blocking by Flash ID is the order of the day and takes simple browser workarounds out of play, so unless users want to go the PlayOn route, there's large swaths of legitimate video on the web that's now inaccessible. Fox.com joins NBC, ABC... (more)

Reckless Racing review (iPhone)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2554 days, 23 hours ago
Sunday, October 24, 2010 11:45:28 PM GMT
Developed by Swedish firm Pixelbite and released just a few days ago by EA and Polarbit, Reckless Racing is a game we've been following since it was known as "Deliverace" early this year -- and honestly, there was a spell where we'd gone so long without having heard anything about it that we'd kind of assumed the awesome-looking project had been canceled. Fortunately, that wasn't the case -- it's now available on iPhone, iPad, and Android -- so we decided to take it for a quick spin. After all, top-down ... (more)

Meizu M8 ceases production amid pressure from Apple and intellectual property office -- Engadget

Well, can't say we didn't see this coming; we're just surprised that it's taken this long for Meizu to take a hit over its notorious handset. In case you have no idea what we're talking about, earlier this month said Chinese company's been in heated talks with Apple due to the M8 smartphone bearing an "appearance roughly similar" to the iPhone. Seriously, that's the only reason Apple provided for the accusation, if CEO Jack Wong is to be trusted (and hey, he did kinda ask for it). (more)

Entelligence: Will carriers destroy the Android vision?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2596 days, 15 hours, 17 minutes ago

It's an unfortunately familiar phenomena -- PC vendors suffering from razor thin margins load their devices with more stickers than a stock car and install gigabytes of useless applications that serve only to take up space and use system resources. Sony was perhaps the most egregious in 2008, offering to remove the offending bloatware for a $50 fee. It's was if Tony Soprano went into tech -- "Pay us and we won't mess up your computer." (more)

Some DROID 2 Users Experiencing Signal Issue

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2623 days, 14 hours, 33 minutes ago
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 8:12:27 AM GMT
When Apple launched the iPhone 4, a number of customers complained that when they held the phone a certain way, their reception was greatly diminished. In a press conference held a few weeks after the phone's launch, Jobs demonstrated that the problem could be reproduced on a number of other smartphones. This was a problem that was present in any phone with an internal antenna, he said. If you cover the portion of the phone with the antenna, you're going to get the same result. Though the makers of the... (more)
