Google's Android has finally managed to triumph over Apple's iPhone by capturing 46 percent of the US market share.
Meanwhile, the iPhone's notoriously closed OS lost three percentage points as it dropped from 45 to 42 percent. "In March 2010, there were 34 Android devices from 12 manufacturers available to consumers. Two Android devices, the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, collectively represented 96% of Android traffic in September 2009. Seven months later, 11 devices represented 96% of Android traffic," A... (more)

Microsoft says Android infringes on its patents, licenses HTC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2668 days, 14 hours, 10 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 8:52:56 AM GMT
The lawyers up in Redmond seem to have been woken from their slumber with the sudden realization that -- oh look! -- Google's Android OS infringes on Microsoft's boatload of software patents. How specifically it does so is not identified, but Microsoft believes that elements from both the user interface and the underlying operating system are in violation of its rights. This is very much in keeping with the Windows maker's crusade to assert patent claims over Linux, which in the past has garnished it wit... (more)

Firefox now available for Android 2.0 and above, still at pre-alpha stage

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2668 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 8:51:24 AM GMT
Fennec, Mozilla's codeword for mobile Firefox builds, has just made its pre-alpha debut on Android. The tastefully named Vladimir Vukićević informs us that it's pretty much a debug release, with unoptimized memory utilization and some quirks rebooting the app when it's started and when add-ons are installed, but it is at a stage where the devs felt they could get useful feedback from a broader user base. It's not yet available on the Android Market, so you'll be needing to download it from the link below... (more)

Google, Broadcom close to enabling 802.11n on Nexus One?

We need a name for this whole drama -- we like "n-Gate," but it's a little too close to N-Gage for comfort. Anyhow, you might recall that Google briefly listed 802.11n support in the Nexus One around the time of its release, then wiped all mention of it only to have iFixit's teardown reveal on no uncertain terms that the Broadcom-sourced wireless chipset was definitely capable of rocking it. Steve Jobs: Folks Who Want Porn Can Buy Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2675 days, 3 hours, 13 minutes ago

Since Apple has the authority to approve what's sold on its App Store for things that'll run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, it can also control what users of its devices aren't allowed to see. One such category of things that Apple wants to keep away from its App Store is anything of pornographic nature, and if consumers aren't happy about that, then Steve Jobs will point them to buying an Android phone. Droid Incredible review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2677 days, 5 hours, 39 minutes ago

At this point, the HTC Incredible should seem like pretty familiar territory to our readers. We first caught wind of the device in a ROM leak back in December of 2009, and shortly thereafter saw lots of little snippets on the phone that made it clear it was headed our way. Of course, it's a potent combination that's been put together here -- an HTC-made, Verizon-locked device sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 748MB of ROM, a microSD slot (with support for up to 32GB cards), an 8 m... It's a near-weekly occurrence: HTC, or Motorola, or someone releases a brand-new Android phone. There are a ton of them! But really, there are only a few worth buying. Here are the best Android phones on each carrier. Choosing an Android phone is just like choosing any other cellphone, except easier: You're already onboard with the Android operating system, you're prepared to shell out for a data plan, and probably have a more specific idea of what you want in a phone than your average buyer. Accordingl... (more)

The Dogs of War: Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2680 days, 14 hours, 43 minutes ago

If you think about it, what's shocking isn't the size of Microsoft or Apple, companies that are decades old, established titans of industry (even if they have stumbled in the past)—it's Google. In just over 10 years, Google's become arguably the most important company on the web, spreading to anything the internet touches with astonishing speed, almost like a virus: From the web and search to books, video, mobile phones, operating systems, and soon, your TV. Friends have become enemies, enemies more para... (more)

HTC Droid Incredible officially official for Verizon, April 29 for $200 (updated with a live shot!)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2680 days, 15 hours, 1 minute ago

Though some information leaked out of Verizon's pipes yesterday, HTC just got really real with the Droid Incredible at the 99% Conference in New York today. Specs are pretty much what we expected: Android 2.1 with Sense, an 8 megapixel cam, 1GHz Snapdragon (not the underclocked core we'd heard rumored before, thankfully), WiFi, and a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Basically, this unit is a Sense-ified HTC Nexus One with an up-spec'd camera and a penchant for Verizon's airwaves -- and for a whole lotta An... (more)

Droid Incredible specs confirmed on Verizon site

Yes, good people of Engadgetland, we finally have an official spec sheet for the eagerly awaited Incredible handset. A 3.7-inch OLED touchscreen leads the way, with an 800 x 480 resolution, which will offer the full Google Experience on Android version 2.1. That sounds remarkably like a refashioned Nexus One to us, even down to the 1GHz Snapdragon chip inside, but where the Droid Incredible differs is in its inclusion of Sense UI (à la the Desire) and an 8 megapixel autofocusing camera. We're also seei... (more)

We swear we've seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it's also possible we're crazy. Either way, it looks like Moto's working on a new Blur set running Android 2.1, and if you thought screen size and resolution issues differences were a big part of Android fragmentation before, well, you ain't seen nothing yet. Oh, and as for the story that this pic came from a student who borrowed the phone from a friend whose dad works for Moto? We'd be more skeptical, except that's e... (more)
