Sensics head-tracking 3D Smart goggles hands-on (video)

When we first caught wind of Sensic's head-tracking 3D Smart goggles a few days ago, we couldn't help but think of it as a Sony HMZ-T1 on Android-flavored steroids. We've just spent some time with the prototype here on the show floor playing a virtual demo that had us smashing buildings in a virtual world -- notably running entirely on the headset, thanks (in part) to its 1.2GHZ dual-core CPU. If you can't tell from the picture, the headset is absolutely massive. In-hand it's quiet hefty, but once it eng... (more)

Got your grain of salt ready? Good! Survey and statistical analysis firm Cowen and Company has published the results of a survey that suggests "casual" gamer interest in dedicated handheld gaming systems has declined by 29 percent over the last 5 years. 37 percent of people polled play games on a dedicated device, while 52 percent primarily use their phones. The study goes on to say that companies like EA, who have invested heavily in iOS and Android gaming, are better positioned for the future of the ma... (more)

Android Malware Up 427 Percent Since July

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2214 days, 1 hour, 19 minutes ago
Monday, November 21, 2011 8:08:16 AM GMT
Google's Android OS has enjoyed huge amounts of success. Last week, we reported that the company had activated 200 million Android devices and was activating a further 250,000 every single day. However, it seems that those huge numbers come with another, and this one is a lot more sinister: According to Juniper Networks, Android malware has surged and is up more than 400 percent in the last few months alone. Super Tiny Computer Puts Android on Your TV, Laptop

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2214 days, 1 hour, 24 minutes ago
Monday, November 21, 2011 8:03:17 AM GMT
Early this year we got to see, through ARM-powered devices such as the Motorola Atrix, that it doesn't take even a netbook to run basic computing functions. At a live demonstration in New York City, FXI Technologies showed off the next evolution of that idea: an ARM-based computer on a USB stick without any of that extra smartphone or tablet baggage. How-to: use Google Music from anywhere (yes, outside of the United States)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2214 days, 1 hour, 27 minutes ago
Monday, November 21, 2011 8:00:40 AM GMT
Now that Google Music has finally clawed its way out of the realm of beta-ware, anybody in the US can sign up to play without an invitation. Of course, that leaves many folks out of the equation, so we thought it a good time to point out at least one other route to let you get involved in the service, no matter where you live. See, the rub seems to be that Google checks your IP address on your first attempt to log in, and accept its terms of use -- only the first time, and yeah, you're definitely going t... (more)

Ice Cream Sandwich Revealed with Refined Multitasking, UI

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2246 days, 5 hours, 26 minutes ago

Tuesday night Google finally unveiled Android 4.0 aka "Ice Cream Sandwich," the latest version of its OS which now sports an "evolved" UI that's actually similar to the company's tablet-oriented build, Android 3.x "Honeycomb." This new version will reportedly also make it easier on developers to write apps for both smartphones and tablets, possibly preventing much of the fragmentation that currently plagues the Android platform across the board. Switched On: Assets in gear

Ecosystems take years to build and depend on other companies. Really, who has the time these days? Plus, they kick in only if a product reaches critical mass. Microsoft and SanDisk demonstrated the risk a few years back with their digital media players in seeding the market with third-party cases and docks using their own proprietary and now abandoned connectors. Over the past year, though, we've seen a number of tech companies take a new approach to mobile product development -- the corporate showcase -... (more)

We know, we know -- you're anxiously awaiting the public launch of iTunes Match, but what if you're one of those people? You know, the crowd that dips their toes into both Google and Apple offerings. It's clearly not as blasphemous as you may have been led to believe, as the fine folks in Google's mobile department have just produced an iOS-specific web app for Google Music Beta. If you've ever wondered what companies take your advice (read: complaints) to heart, here's yet another one that is: Sprint. Recently, HTC received oodles of praise from a minuscule-but-passionate group of folks who appreciate the company's stance on unlocking its bootloaders, and today we learned that folks at The Now Network made a similarly impressive change after hearing yet another enthusiastic sect... our readers.
