AT&T launches Sony Ericsson Xperia Play with Gingerbread, blue color option

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2293 days, 15 hours, 15 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 13, 2011 7:41:06 AM GMT
Well, looky here. AT&T has very quietly revealed it's going to sell the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. No press release, no splashy press conference backed by a cheesy disco soundtrack. The thing just showed up at the carrier's holiday preview event here in New York City. We're told it runs Gingerbread, which would make it AT&T's second Android 2.3 handset behind the newly launched HTC Status. Alas, AT&T won't say just yet when the Play will be available or how much it will cost on contract, but ... (more)

Google Maps Transit Navigation beta for Android hands-on (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2299 days, 12 hours, 39 minutes ago
Thursday, July 07, 2011 10:16:58 AM GMT
Earlier this afternoon, Google pushed Maps v5.7 to the Android Market. The app's Transit Navigation (beta) feature brings GPS stop-by-stop nav to public transit systems in over 400 cities around the world, helping you find the subway or bus stop, then letting you know exactly when to get off as you ride. There are obvious benefits to using this in a foreign city, where alert-enabled (English!) directions could potentially save you hours of frustration. (more)

A few weeks back, HTC made headlines when it said that it no longer had plans to release a Gingerbread/Android 2.3 update for HTC Desire users. The company claimed the Desire simply didn't have enough RAM to accommodate both Gingerbread and HTC's Sense UI. (more)

Atrix 4G bootloader unlocked! You can hack it up today or wait for official Gingerbread update

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2312 days, 15 hours, 42 minutes ago

The Atrix 4G is today an eminently more intriguing smartphone than it was yesterday. Leaked code from Motorola's upcoming Gingerbread update for the handset has made its way into the hands of the always-eager coders at xda-developers, which has resulted in two things: one, the discovery that Motorola intends to unlock the Atrix's bootloader when it upgrades it to Android 2.3, and two, downloadable files to let you do exactly that today, even if you're still stuck on Froyo. Google TV 2.0 'Fishtank' developer kit revealed running Honeycomb and apps

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2313 days, 16 hours, 36 minutes ago
Thursday, June 23, 2011 6:19:47 AM GMT
As Google TV gears up for a Honeycomb-based v2.0, the team announced at the I/O event that developers could get access to "Fishtank" hardware for them to test their apps on and here it is, revealed by Geek.com. The hardware itself is a relatively nondescript box packing an Intel CE4100 processor (no ARM...yet) and a Logitech Revue wireless keyboard that connects wirelessly via a USB dongle, plus a few more ins and outs than retail boxes have including coax. Monsoon Multimedia is pushing its Vulkano line of set-top boxes to the forefront once again by offering a feature not found on competition from Sling, TiVo or Roku, by adding the ability to make DVR recordings directly to iPad, iPhone or Android devices. While users can still watch TV from anywhere in the world using the Vulkano, the new DVR-to-mobile feature is restricted to WiFi and will only work with the new Blast model. (more)

TiVo Android and iPhone apps in the works, Season Passes soon at your fingertips

Sure, it's technically been possible to manage one's TiVo via the mobile web for a half-decade now, but earlier methods were neither intuitive nor enthralling. Earlier this year, the company released its iPad app -- a diddy that showcases functions like remote control features, ToDo List prioritizing and Season Pass management. After hinting at a number of apps for smaller-screen devices (boasting all manners of operating systems), the latest print edition of CEPro has delivered solid intel that the afor... (more)

Android Market Gets Compatibility Feature

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2324 days, 15 hours, 17 minutes ago
Sunday, June 12, 2011 7:38:53 AM GMT
One of the nice things about Android is that there are tons of different phones to choose from. However, having such a wide range of devices means there are some inconsistencies along the way. Some devices may not be able to run certain apps for one reason or another, while others can run the same applications just fine. Up until today, Android users had to rely on developers to include any compatibility issues in the description. Not anymore! (more)

EVO 2 console puts Android in a box

In 2006, Envizions announced the EVO: Phase One console, which was designed as a media center device. It apparently didn't change the world. Five years later, the world has changed anyway, and Envizions has access to an operating system for its new console that developers are already comfortable with: Android. (more)

Samsung Infuse 4G review

We're just getting into the swing of spring, flowers blooming and skeeters biting, but already it's been a great year for Samsung -- if we ignore the whole lawsuit thing. Just a few weeks ago the company delivered to us our highest scoring Android phone yet, the Galaxy S II and, while that handset has not appeared on American shores, we were graced with the Droid Charge, which offers LTE speed, strong battery life, and an on-contract price that slightly exceeds its design. Samsung strikes back at Apple with ten patent infringement claims

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2375 days, 16 hours, 38 minutes ago

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone: in the latest chapter of the Apple-Samsung dispute over their smartphones' resemblance, the latter company has just retaliated by filing lawsuits against Apple in three countries. Sammy's load of ammo include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, though we've yet to hear more details about these claims. Now we just sit back and enjoy the show -- popcorn, anyone? (more)

Alien Jihad is a game ... no, really, it is

Alien Jihad is a rather heavy handed satire game with social networking elements. While it's been designed to "bring back the simplicity and instant thrill of the great arcade shooters from the 1980’s and the FMV games of the early 90’s," the ability to share scores on sites like Facebook is a big part of the experience. Galaxy S II benchmarked, makes other phones cry in shame

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2383 days, 15 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, April 14, 2011 7:40:46 AM GMT
The first benchmarks of Samsung's 1.2GHz Galaxy S II -- we saw the 1GHz variant tested previously -- are rolling in, and it's fast. Almost suspiciously so. Its speedy dual-core Exynos CPU pulled off a 3,053 in Quadrant and scored double what the similarly specced HTC Sensation did in Smartbench2011. Those scores also represent a more than threefold improvement over the original Galaxy S. Of course, these are purely synthetic benchmarks and may not translate into an equally improved experience in day to d... (more)

Kyocera Echo review

It's not exactly difficult to put into words what the Kyocera Echo is -- it's a dual-screened Android phone, after all -- but it's a wee bit more challenging to wrap your head around who exactly it's for. The hardcore gaming contingent already has Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, and those obsessed with screen real estate have options spanning the gamut (more)
