Skype with video calling leaks for HTC Thunderbolt, celebrations unsurprisingly erupt (update)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2413 days, 6 hours, 36 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 7:11:21 AM GMT
Verizon may have left it out from the get-go, but it looks as if eager HTC Thunderbolt owners needn't wait another day to test out a video-enabled version of Skype. For those outside of The Loop, there was quite the back-and-forth going during the early days, with Verizon announcing at the 11th hour that its flagship LTE phone would be shipped sans Skype. It's still unavailable in the bona firde Android Market, but a build has appeared from the ether and seems to be humming along just fine here at Engadg... (more)

PlayStation emulator for Android goes free and open source

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2417 days, 5 hours, 19 minutes ago

PSX4Droid, the PSOne emulator for Android that got the smackdown from Google recently, has found a surefire way of getting around the ban: Go free and open source. The latest version of the software does just that, skipping out on Google's market completely and putting both the app and the source code online for anyone to download and check out. (more)

Mark Rein: Unreal Development Kit 'eventually' coming to Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2417 days, 5 hours, 20 minutes ago
Friday, April 08, 2011 8:27:00 AM GMT
Budding Android developers looking to utilize Epic's free Unreal Development Kit know it's still in the works for the platform. Of course, that's not to say the Unreal Engine itself isn't being used on Android -- Dungeon Defenders is perhaps the most visible Unreal Engine 3-powered game on the mobile OS, though a recent deal between Epic and Gameloft ensures that won't be the case for long. Companies can currently license UE3 code to develop Android games, though Epic VP Mark Rein told Gamasutra that "UD... (more)

Droid X2 reappears in the wild, still indistinguishable from Droid X

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2417 days, 5 hours, 27 minutes ago

You've seen it before and now you're seeing it again. The Droid X2 that Motorola seems unwilling to announce has made another unsanctioned appearance in the wild. It's still rocking Android 2.2 and there's sadly no indication of any LTE goodness for it, but we suspect the changes that justify the 2 in its name will be happening under the hood. (more)

HTC Droid Incredible 2 struts its stuff in leaked press shots? (Updated)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2417 days, 5 hours, 28 minutes ago
Friday, April 08, 2011 8:19:14 AM GMT
If you had any doubts about HTC's Incredible S making it to our shores, they're probably dissipating as we speak -- not only has the phone obtained Verizon's shiny red checkmark, it's now got the robotic eye of Sauron staring at us with ferocious intensity. PocketNow obtained these pictures of the likely Droid Incredible 2 without naming so much as an anonymous source, and we wouldn't be surprised if it's Verizon's way of reminding us that the handset is rapidly on its way to market. You'll find two more... (more)

10 million flock to download Angry Birds Rio

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2421 days, 6 hours, 17 minutes ago
Monday, April 04, 2011 7:30:35 AM GMT
It took just ten days for Angry Birds Rio -- the movie tie-in spinoff of Angry Birds -- to land on over 10 million mobile phones. An ambiguous tweet from Angry Birds dev Rovio announced the news, stating, "10 in 10 ... Angry Birds Rio breaking all records. A massive thanks to all our fans!!!" Mobile-Ent.biz clarified the tweet's meaning moments later, asking if the "10 in 10" was referring to 10 million downloads in the first 10 days. (more)

Xperia X10 goes on sale for just a dollar on contract, Gingerbread-flavored future makes it appealing

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2421 days, 6 hours, 24 minutes ago

Okay, so a couple of weeks back, we wouldn't have cared if Best Buy was willing to give us money to carry the Xperia X10, we still would have steered clear of its flawed UI and outdated software. But Sony Ericsson did a funny thing last Friday by promising to slap Gingerbread on this 4-inch sucker, which makes its current $1 contract price an eminently more intriguing proposition. (more)

With the launch of Sony Ericsson's Android-powered "PlayStation Phone," the Xperia Play, supposedly right around the corner, Google has pulled the plug on a prominent PSOne emulator for its mobile OS. According to its author, "zodttd," PSX4Droid was removed from the Android Market without warning due to a "Content Policy violation," though he suspects it has more to do with Sony's imminent smart phone offering. "Sony's Xperia Play must be coming soon," tweeted the dev, adding that, "The timing is suspici... (more)

Have you been considering ditching your Android phone for an iPhone ever since you heard that Minecraft would be heading to iOS later this year? Then you might want to reconsider, as Kotaku has confirmed that the game that's already inspired a documentary will be headed to Android as well. Interestingly, the site says that the game's creators initially held some talks with third-party developers about doing a mobile version, but ultimately decided to do both ports in-house. Details are otherwise still pr... (more)

Google is Really Disappointed with App Sales

Over the last few years we seen more Android device launches than we care to remember. However, despite the fact that there’s no shortage of Android devices or users, there seems to be a shortage of people actually paying cold, hard cash for Android apps. Forbes cites Google’s Android Platform Manager Eric Chu as saying Google is “not happy” about the purchases of paid apps. (more)
