Entelligence: App stores are not enough

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2644 days, 16 hours, 4 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:24:49 AM GMT
A little over two years ago, Apple changed the face of mobile computing when it launched the App Store and broke down the barriers between app developers and end users. There was no longer a need for users to go to a third-party web site, hand over a credit card, download an app to their computer, and sync it to their device. The App Store's integration with iTunes made it easy for the consumer to purchase apps, and purchase apps they did. But while Apple now commands a major lead in the sheer number of ... (more)

Okay, you've got an iPhone 4 -- now what?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2647 days, 16 hours, 2 minutes ago

Whether you were lucky enough to score an early delivery, blazed through a pre-order reservation line, or camped out all night, you're going to want to take full advantage of your hard-won new iPhone 4 once you get it home. As we said in our review, the core experience of using an iPhone hasn't changed too dramatically with iOS 4 and the new hardware -- it's instead been refined and extended with some new capabilities. That means you'll need to poke around a little and download some updated apps to reall... (more)

Apple responds to iPhone 4 reception issues: you're holding the phone the wrong way

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2647 days, 16 hours, 11 minutes ago
Friday, June 25, 2010 7:17:55 AM GMT
So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today... and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location o... (more)

iPad Thieves Target NYC Apple Store

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2647 days, 16 hours, 29 minutes ago
Friday, June 25, 2010 6:59:52 AM GMT
Apple this week announced that it has sold three million iPads since the device first launched. However, it seems there are a few iPads unaccounted for as thieves are targeting one New York Apple store and stealing the tablets right off the delivery truck. Things have gotten so bad that even store employees aren't allowed to know delivery times anymore. (more)

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G screens go head-to-head under the microscope

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:09:06 AM GMT
We got up pretty close to the iPhone 4's retina display in our review, but we can't say we got quite as close as PhD candidates Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt of Penn State University, who have kindly provided us with some images of the screen under a microscope (along with an iPhone 3G for comparison). According to their measurements, the iPhone 3G's pixels measure 13 x 40 microns, while the iPhone 4's measure 6.5 x 20 microns, which adds up to exactly four times as many pixels. As impressive as sounds tha... (more)

iPhone 4 drop test yields results (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 16 hours, 29 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:00:33 AM GMT
There's been a lot of fuss about the iPhone 4's Gorilla Glass "custom glass" comparable in strength to sapphire crystal but 30 times harder than plastic. Sounds incredible, right? But make no mistake, that front glass panel will still break if dropped. Ok, it took four deliberate attempts to accomplish what you see above but it still happened. Bottom line: like any cellphone, you'll have to worry about more than just scratches. See the destruction after the break. (more)

AT&T Halts iPhone 4 Orders as eBay Prices Hit $5K

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2654 days, 15 hours, 50 minutes ago
Friday, June 18, 2010 7:39:34 AM GMT
Apple yesterday announced that together with AT&T, it had received 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4. It represents the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was supposedly the reason for order and approval system malfunctions. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling didn't mention recent reports that attributed the malfunctions to an untested fraud update that was applied to AT&T servers over the weekend. (more)

Restaurant Replaces Paper-Based Menus with iPads

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2657 days, 15 hours, 21 minutes ago

Will electronic media eventually eradicate paper products? The transition is eventual, however one restaurant in Australia is taking the digital step early by ditching its paper-based menus and wine lists. Instead, it will offer customers an iPad running a special application designed to not only list the establishment's menu, but apparently their ingredients. and other useful information (more)

FBI Launches Investigation into AT&T iPad Breach

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2660 days, 15 hours, 26 minutes ago
Saturday, June 12, 2010 8:03:13 AM GMT
On Wednesday, a security team spoke to Gawker about an AT&T vulnerability it had exploited to gain information about iPad users. As a result of their research, they had obtained what the web is now calling, "the most exclusive email list on the planet." Goatse Security's list includes the email addresses of NYT CEO Janet Robinson, Harvey Weinstein, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Diane Sawyer of ABC News. While the breach was reported to AT&T and the security ... (more)

Artefact puts Flash on your iPad 'In A Pinch' (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2660 days, 15 hours, 34 minutes ago
Saturday, June 12, 2010 7:55:47 AM GMT
Despite Steve Jobs's ethical reservations, it's clear that people want Flash on their iPads (or at the very least, developers want to find ways put it there). Recently we saw Smokescreen, a browser plug-in that pulls apart SWF binaries and reassembles them into something Apple-friendly. Taking a slightly different tack, the kids at the Artefact Group have been working on a service called Flash In A Pinch. (more)

AT&T breach reveals 114,000 iPad owners' email addresses, including some elite customers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2662 days, 15 hours, 55 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:34:44 AM GMT
Uh oh. According to Valleywag, an AT&T security breach led to the exposure of 114,000 email addresses (and associated SIM / ICC identifiers) belonging to Apple iPad owners. A group of hackers calling themselves Goatse Security (be careful looking that one up) figured out a number of ICC-IDs and ran a script on AT&T's site through a faked iPad UserAgent, which would then return the associated addresses. Some of those affected were actually quite big names, including the CEOs of The New York Times ... (more)

Samsung: iPhone 4's retina display is nice, but it's no AMOLED

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2662 days, 15 hours, 58 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:31:11 AM GMT
Samsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS, Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world's biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED sc... (more)

iPhone 4: Who Needs the iPad Now?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2663 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes ago

Apple has taught us the art of integration. A sense of how hardware can beautifully work with software and other hardware. A paper book example of a homemade ecosystem, if you will. Of course, it is just a matter of time until Apple will make a mistake. Everyone does and Apple will as well. I am wondering if Apple got too excited about its new iPhone and has shot itself in the foot. The iPhone 4 does not integrate with the iPad. There is little added value. And if you have to choose, which one do you bu... (more)

iPhone 4 guide: preview, pricing, availability

Wednesday, June 09, 2010 6:15:01 AM GMT
In a lot of ways, Apple's iPhone 4 announcement was short on surprises. We've been playing with the new iPhone OS 4 (now dubbed iOS 4) for a while, and photos of the hardware had been widely disseminated, a rarity for an unreleased Apple product. Still, Apple managed to fill in the gaps and build up the hype, and there's plenty to know about this handset that extends beyond what you can glean from bricked hardware of dubious provenance. Follow along with us as we break it all down, including detailed imp... (more)

iPhone 4 pixel density examined (video)

Sure, you've seen our iPhone 4 hands-on... but have you seen it through a retina display? We put the new device next to our trusty old iPhone 3G to get a feel just how different the screens look with twice the pixel density and shot a little pseudo-macro video. There's a marked difference in the screens, even side-by-side with the EVO 4G, and we found that even from a distance we were able to read bodies of text we'd previously had to squint to discern on our classic iPhones. Hard to capture, it really i... (more)
