Jon Stewart Slams Apple over Gizmodo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2785 days, 2 hours, 29 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:45:05 AM GMT
Wednesday night Jon Stewart planted behind his desk on The Daily Show and blasted Apple over the whole Gizmodo raid. Naturally he takes a comical route throughout the entire report, holding up the iPad to his ear and saying that he likes to tell the kids he's shrinking. He also admitted that he rarely does product endorsement (unlike American Idol), so covering the Apple issue was supposedly his personal address to a company he's admired for decades. (more)

Steve Jobs made it painfully clear today in an open letter that he doesn't have much love for Adobe and its Flash technology. But still, the developers at both companies have gotten together and delivered the first step to making Flash video far more livable on Mac OS X systems. (more)

Steam for Mac opens a portal to May 12, steps through

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2785 days, 2 hours, 45 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:28:54 AM GMT
Valve promised that Steam on Mac would arrive in April. As you're no doubt aware, April is nearly over. Does that make Steam... vaporware? Not quite. Put away the Caruso sunglasses for two more weeks, because our friends at Joystiq just received a one-line email reading: "Valve today announced the public release of Steam for the Mac is May 12. Please stay tuned for more information." Oh well -- at least you're not waiting for Steam on Linux, and you can always stock up on Razer peripherals while you endu... (more)

Steve Jobs just posted an open letter of sorts explaining Apple's position on Flash, going back to his company's long history with Adobe and expounding upon six main points of why he thinks Flash is wrong for mobile devices. HTML5 naturally comes up, along with a few reasons you might not expect. Here's the breakdown: (more)

iPhone tethering on AT&T still waiting on better network performance

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2786 days, 3 hours, 53 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:21:13 AM GMT
AT&T's own Ralph de la Vega mentioned as early as November of 2008 that you'd be able to tether your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem "soon," but here we are some ten months after the initial announcement of official tethering support in the platform and there's no sign of it. Considering that many iPhone carriers around the world deployed it as soon as Apple had it ready -- and many more came online over the months to follow -- it seems that AT&T's silence on the issue has spoken ... Adobe's Flash Player 'Gala' OS X preview tested: results may vary

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2786 days, 4 hours, 1 minute ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:13:39 AM GMT
So we just put a few minutes aside to put Adobe's new "Gala" build of Flash 10.1 through its paces on our latest-generation Core i5 and i7 15-inch MacBook Pros here, and the results are a little confusing to say the least. On our i7 equipped with the high-res display and 512MB GeForce GT 330M, processor utilization playing a 1080p sample video on YouTube dropped by a third to a half on average -- not bad -- with Safari 4.0.5 besting Firefox 3.6.4 by a smidge. Our i5 saw strangely different numbers, thoug... (more)

Google's Android has finally managed to triumph over Apple's iPhone by capturing 46 percent of the US market share.
Meanwhile, the iPhone's notoriously closed OS lost three percentage points as it dropped from 45 to 42 percent. "In March 2010, there were 34 Android devices from 12 manufacturers available to consumers. Two Android devices, the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, collectively represented 96% of Android traffic in September 2009. Seven months later, 11 devices represented 96% of Android traffic," A... (more)

iPad Camera Kit ships with USB headset and keyboard support

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2789 days, 4 hours, 57 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:17:37 AM GMT
Reports are coming in that the iPad Camera Connection Kit has finally shown up on a couple buyer doorsteps, and that the pair of white dongles may actually have been worth the wait. While one is a simple SD card adapter that adds one-touch image and video import (including RAW, complete with EXIF data) to the iPad, the second provides a USB port with some exciting new functionality. TUAW reports one reader could type on an iPad via USB keyboard, and those rumors about USB audio were true, (more)

Apple to Gizmodo: Return That $5,000 iPhone 4G

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2793 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 8:02:18 PM GMT
Various reports are indicating that Gizmodo paid $5,000 (plus a bonus for traffic) or $10,000 for the next-generation iPhone previewed on Monday, depending on the source. Gawker Media founder Nick Denton clarified the pricetag last night here on Twitter, saying that the company paid the lower fee and that "we'll do anything for a story." Either way, Gizmodo racked in over 15 million page views by the end of the day, and may have damaged its relationship with Apple in the process. (more)

Google vs. Apple: Battle of the Copycats

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2793 days, 14 hours, 22 minutes ago

So there you have it. Google will release its own tablet to steal a piece of the iPad pie. Lately, it seems, Google puts quite a bit of effort into annoying Apple. Conceivably, Google has already become the new Microsoft by trying to be everything to everyone and this upcoming tablet may just be another example of how Google is much more a content provider than a hardware company. But there is also a real chance that Google can succeed and beat Apple’s iPad—the iPad isn’t as new and magical as Apple clai... (more)

Steve Jobs: Folks Who Want Porn Can Buy Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2793 days, 14 hours, 24 minutes ago

Since Apple has the authority to approve what's sold on its App Store for things that'll run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, it can also control what users of its devices aren't allowed to see. One such category of things that Apple wants to keep away from its App Store is anything of pornographic nature, and if consumers aren't happy about that, then Steve Jobs will point them to buying an Android phone. Look. You can either wear your iPad, or you can wear your iPad -- like this stylish trailblazer spotted at the Lennox Mall in Atlanta this week. Of course, we've been wearing ours like this since day one, but it's always nice to see a trend catch on. Let's just hope no one tries to steal this guy's iPad. We all know how that can end. (more)

For the hardcore still with us, the story goes a little something like this: a Denver-area man headed out to his local Apple store to pick up an iPad for a colleague (read: not even for himself), and in an interview, he admits to not even really understanding the fascination with Apple's new product. iPhone OS 4.0 beta 2 hits the scene

That's right: a little under two weeks since the launch event and the release of the first beta, Apple has pushed out beta 2 of its next-gen iPhone OS 4.0. Considering that our units have seemingly gotten buggier over time the longer they've had beta 1 loaded, we've got high hopes for this one -- hopes that stand a very real chance of being crushed, of course, as long as this isn't a gold build. Guess we're still months off from that, huh? Stay tuned for a report of anything that's changed, new, awesome,... (more)
