iPad delays are hitting everyone, but those in the U.S. are still getting first pick at all the new iPad models. With the Wi-Fi model already at retailers, the next new roll out for Apple will be the iPad 3G, which will accept a Micro-SIM card for contract-free 3G options from AT&T. (more)

A fairly strange story developed over the weekend. A strange smartphone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside an iPhone 3G case – but inside the case was not an iPhone 3G. It was a phone that had iPhone-like characteristics, but it wasn't any iPhone currently out in the public. (more)

iPhone OS 4 reveals its social side: Facebook integration?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2683 days, 11 hours, 39 minutes ago
Monday, April 19, 2010 5:26:51 PM GMT
Users of webOS and HTC Sense can skip ahead, you're already familiar with tight social networking integration on your handsets. Now Apple appears ready to join the social, so to speak. New evidence of low-level Facebook event and contacts integration has been revealed in iPhone OS 4 hinting at the possibility of unified Calendar and Contacts apps from Apple when the OS launches this summer on, um, this device. Web site Website Gunning for Safety says that Apple appears to have created a "separate type of... (more)

The Dogs of War: Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 20 hours, 46 minutes ago

If you think about it, what's shocking isn't the size of Microsoft or Apple, companies that are decades old, established titans of industry (even if they have stumbled in the past)—it's Google. In just over 10 years, Google's become arguably the most important company on the web, spreading to anything the internet touches with astonishing speed, almost like a virus: From the web and search to books, video, mobile phones, operating systems, and soon, your TV. Friends have become enemies, enemies more para... (more)

iPhone HD Images Leaked? And Coming June 22?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 21 hours, 2 minutes ago
Friday, April 16, 2010 8:04:25 AM GMT
It's no secret that Apple loves coming up with a new iPhone every year to snatch up more of the smartphone market. And with its past history of summer releases, it's a sure thing that new hardware will be timed with the release of iPhone OS 4.0. With the push to more aluminum unibody-like construction on the iPad, it's only natural to assuming that the next iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone HD, to also pack some metal with it. Today, this showed up on MacRumors. (more)

New iPhone in June, claims SaskTel CEO

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 21 hours, 3 minutes ago
Friday, April 16, 2010 8:03:23 AM GMT
Saskatchewan-based SaskTel isn't the biggest Canadian carrier out there -- it's very regional, along the lines of Cincinnati Bell for the US, in terms of subscribers -- but it's definitely a legit company, and its CEO Robert Watson has casually divulged some potentially major news to the Leader-Post. In a discussion on its 3G network set to launch July 1st, he had this to say:... (more)

iPhone OS 4 jailbreak released to developers, not you

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 21 hours, 5 minutes ago
Friday, April 16, 2010 8:01:28 AM GMT
Be clear on this: if you're not a jailbreak app developer then the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta release is not for you. The iPhone OS 4 jailbreak previously hinted at is for real and it's for devs only so that they can prep their wares for the summer update. Don't worry, it doesn't reveal anything new to Apple and no, it won't work on the iPad -- it's Mac OSX only, iPhone 3G only, and iPhone 4.0 beta 1 only for now. But hey, it's early days, at least you know it's out there and that people smarter than you are ten... (more)

PhoneGap framework fine for App Store development, sez Apple

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2687 days, 20 hours, 55 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:10:36 AM GMT
Now, we've all been concerned about recent updates to the iPhone dev agreement -- you haven't been sleeping and your parents are, quite frankly, worried for your sanity. And it's a heady subject: "what is the fate of PhoneGap in the wake of the iPhone OS 4 beta SDK?" Well, worry no more, little one -- it seems that Jesse Macfadyen, a contributor to the project, pinged Apple to make sure that users of the mobile development platform wouldn't find their apps rejected simply for using the tool. Apple takes aim at Adobe... or Android?

The already strict requirements that must be met for an application to be published on Apple's App Store are set to take a turn for the worse, as Apple's NDA-protected license agreement has now updated an already annoying existing clause, Section 3.3.1, to make it even more offensive. (more)

Adobe says iPhone / iPad adoption and 'alternative technologies' (cough, HTML5) could harm its business

Adobe might continue to crow about Flash and its importance on both the desktop and mobile devices, but there's no lying to investors, and the company is pretty blunt about the threat of the iPhone and iPad in the end-of-quarter Form 10-Q it just filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission: it flatly says that "to the extent new releases of operating systems or other third-party products, platforms or devices, such as the Apple iPhone or iPad, make it more difficult for our products to perform, and... All courtesy of Geohot, natch. Update: Though geohot broke the news, looks like @comex was a major contributor. Video of iPad as N64 console and more pics after the break. (more)

VIDEO: Windows 95 Running On the iPad

You might remember our writing about Windows 95 running on the iPhone in July of last year. The iSoft team achieved this using the Bochs emulator and an original Windows 95 image. Well it would seem the folks at iSoft have done it again. After receiving an email from someone named Pavel Egorkin, we did a little research and it turns out Pavel is part of the iSoft dev team. Pavel sent us the following video of Windows 95 running on an iPad. (more)

Evening Reading: Social Gaming on the iPhone

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2693 days, 20 hours, 48 minutes ago
Friday, April 09, 2010 8:18:02 AM GMT
So, Apple is going to be adding a social gaming network (a la Xbox Live and PlayStation Network) to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad later this year. There were already 3rd-party networks on the platform, but the lack of a unified experience was damaging to the user. Just think about going back to the early days of console-multiplayer, where every game ran its own friend lists and architecture. (more)

Apple's iPhone, as slick as it may be, has always lagged behind the competition when it came to basic OS features such as copy & paste and multitasking. With copy & paste taken care of in iPhone OS 3.0, Apple announced today plans to tackle the latter feature with iPhone OS 4.0. Yes, multitasking will finally be here in the new software update due to hit this summer. (more)
