Apple Asks Fair Labor Association for Factory Inspections

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1988 days, 19 hours, 3 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:37:12 AM GMT
Apple has seen significant pressure from labor rights groups and customers over the treatment of staff manning the factories where the iPhone and iPad are built. Earlier this year, the New York Times ran a rather sobering piece on the general business surrounding the China-based manufacturing facilities employed by Apple and many other consumer electronic and computer companies. In late January, Tim Cook penned a letter to the Apple team insisting that his company takes the welfare of its workers very se... (more)

Apple Now Worth More than Google and Microsoft Combined

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1989 days, 20 hours, 13 minutes ago

Apple has a lot of money. This we know. However, the company passed a jaw-dropping milestone this week that accurately illustrates just how much the Cupertino-based company is actually worth. Apple shares surged to an all-time high yesterday, passing the $490 mark and closing at $493.17. This is up $16.49 from just one day previously and represents a 3.46 percent increase for the day. More interestingly, it pushed Apple's capitalization to just shy of $460 billion. This is more than rivals Microsoft and ... (more)

But this latest batch out of Cupertino's managed to do just the opposite for users running the Lion 10.7.3 package, as it's caused many applications to force crash and bewildered users to restore Time Machine backups. Avid Studio rolls onto iPad, treads on iMovie's toes (video)

There may be a number of options for budding iPad Scorseses, now you can add Avid's "Studio" to that list. Conveniently launching at the same price as iMovie, Avid's intention to woo Apple's users is clear. Those five bucks get you a tidy storyboard solution, "precision" editing, the usual array of transitions and effects, plus multi-channel audio support (including access to your iTunes library). Video can be shot from the device itself, of course (more)

Motorola wins permanent injunction against Apple's iCloud in German court

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1999 days, 18 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:01:31 AM GMT
There's another legal brouhaha brewing in Germany, where Motorola today won an injunction against Apple's iCloud. In a decision handed down from the infamous Mannheim Regional Court this morning, Judge Andreas Voss issued a permanent injunction against Cupertino's cloud-based service and any devices that use it, following a complaint that Motorola originally filed in April of last year. The two companies, as you may recall, have been going at each other rather aggressively in Germany, where Motorola scor... (more)

Apple Sued Over Accelerometer and Bubble Level

Calibrait, LLC, a company with no history and apparently has been founded with the sole purpose to acquire a patent and sue for patent infringement, claims that Apple directly and indirectly infringe its patent 7,447,265 by offering accelerometers in its mobile devices as well as software that turn iPods, iPads and iPhones into electronic alignment devices. Calibrait also alleges that Apple engages in indirect infringement by enabling others to violate Calibrait's patent. (more)

German court rejects Samsung's second 3G patent complaint against Apple

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2006 days, 18 hours, 36 minutes ago
Friday, January 27, 2012 10:04:03 AM GMT
About a week after suffering a legal setback in Germany, Samsung received another bit of bad news this morning, when the Mannheim Regional Court rejected the second of its patent infringement claims against Apple. As with last week's ruling, today's decision addresses one of Samsung's arguments that Apple's 3G / UMTS technology infringes upon its patents. Judge Andreas Voss officially shot down these claims early this morning, though he didn't offer an immediate reason for his ruling. (more)

Report: Apple mulling second Israeli facility after Anobit purchase

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2007 days, 18 hours, 4 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:36:01 AM GMT
It looks like Apple's acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans -- business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It's unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. It's reportedly going to be based in the Matam Technology District, south of Haifa, adjacent to similar facilities operated by Microsoft, Intel and... (more)

Ladies and gentlemen, I got an iPhone this Christmas! I am no longer living in the 20th century! I've been checking out apps I've had my eye on as well as little surprises that have been suggested to me. So far, I've been enjoying the pick-up-and-play nature of mobile games, quickly restocking my stores in Tiny Tower while waiting at red lights, and whatnot. The next logical step was to review an iOS game. (more)

Apple Sees 350,000 Textbook Downloads in Three Days

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2009 days, 20 hours, 57 minutes ago

Just last Thursday Apple announced its plans to revolutionize learning and the textbook industry with a new breed of e-textbook that offers interactive 3D objects, diagrams, videos and photos. The first of these new books are high school textbooks and are available from $14.99 through iBooks 2. While some may be skeptical of the platform's potential (after all, it does require students to first fork out for an iPad), it appears things are already going swimmingly for Apple. (more)

Germany's Mannheim Regional Court has just issued a decision on one front of the ongoing dispute between Apple and Samsung, ruling against one of the Korean manufacturer's several patent infringement claims. At issue is a Samsung patent pertaining to the 3G / UMTS standard -- one of seven that Apple has been accused of infringing. Today, Judge Andreas Voss rejected Samsung's claim, though the reasoning behind this decision remains somewhat murky. (more)

Sony Confused, Says 3DS Success a "Good Sign"

Typically following the handheld console business isn't the ideal topic unless it's a new device that might actually bring something new to the table. The Nintendo 3DS is a noteworthy machine given that it offers glasses-free 3D gaming while granting pocket-sized access to Netflix. The Vita looks interesting simply based on the hardware crammed into the handheld chassis, and Sony's obvious need to take on Apple in the mobile market. (more)
