iCloud Slaps Apple with a Lawsuit

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2349 days, 2 hours, 34 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:11:35 AM GMT
Between the iPhone and the Mighty Mouse, Apple doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to choosing names already owned by someone else. Heck, the company has even been sued for its use of the name ‘Apple’ (by the Beatles, no less). (more)

Lion Boasts Chrome OS-like Browser Mode

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2349 days, 2 hours, 35 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:10:51 AM GMT
Apple has been discussing the features of OS X Lion for quite some time. However, a new, previously unmentioned feature has been uncovered by the folks over at MacRumors, and it should please those who don’t want to wait for their computer’s OS to fully boot before checking email or surfing the web. The "Restart to Safari" option appears on the user lock screen, giving you the choice to either log into your user account, or restart to Safari for instant access to the web. (more)

More iOS 5 features get their moment in the beta testing sun

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2349 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:08:59 AM GMT
Steve Jobs and co. showed off all kinds of cool new features during the debut of iOS 5 at WWDC earlier this month. We had the chance to take a few of them for a spin, when we tested the beta build of the mobile operating system, and now that more and more folks have tried their hand at iOS 5, more and more features are getting their turn to shine. Here's a list of some of the cooler ones we've seen in the last few weeks. (more)

Apple starts selling unlocked iPhone 4 for $649

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2349 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:08:29 AM GMT
Not that it'll do you much good in the US -- an unlocked iPhone 4 will still only work on AT&T's 3G bands -- but Apple has just started selling its prized smartphone without any carrier partiality on its US online store. The big attraction is, of course, being able to take the phone abroad and switch MicroSIMs to your heart's content, an experience that most other nations are already well accustomed to. Additionally, though the $649 (16GB) and $749 (32GB) levies may seem rather steep for American buy... (more)

Review: Frozen Synapse

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2357 days, 3 hours, 46 minutes ago

Indie games come in all shapes and forms, but while many offer creative designs and experiences to those who are willing to look for them, just as many can be a bit derivative of old designs. That isn't the case with Frozen Synapse, a game that could be shoehorned into a "chess meets Rainbow Six" description although that doesn't do it justice. (more)

Switched On: As Windows loses its windows

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2357 days, 3 hours, 52 minutes ago
Monday, June 06, 2011 7:54:01 AM GMT
You say you want a revolution? Well, you know... . you might get one if you're a patient Windows user. With Windows' eighth major release (at least according to Microsoft's math), its name is becoming metaphorical. Taking on a default look that is rooted in Windows Phone 7 -- the first "Windows" to eschew windows -- with a smattering of Media Center, the next major version of Windows marks an overhaul of the initial user interface. Indeed, it is even a more radical departure than Apple made between Mac O... (more)

Apple Replaces Paper Signs with iPad 2s

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2370 days, 4 hours, 18 minutes ago

If you’ve ever been to an Apple store, you’ll likely be familiar with the setup inside. The store is organised by product, with each having its own dedicated section; the iPods, iPhones, iPads and MacBooks all sit on separate wooden tables around the store. Next to each product is a little piece of paper (protected from wear and tear by plastic casing) that details the specs and pricing of the product. However, your next visit to the Apple store is going to be quite different. (more)

Apple patent application suggests partial storage of music to speed up streaming

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2374 days, 3 hours, 37 minutes ago
Friday, May 20, 2011 8:08:27 AM GMT
Could Apple's forthcoming cloud-based music service have a leg up in speed compared to its competitors? It might if a recently published patent application from the company actually pans out. It suggests that just a snippet of the beginning of a song (or movie, for that matter) could be stored locally on a device, and then be synced to the complete version in the cloud, which would let you begin playback "immediately" rather than having to wait for the usual buffering to take place. Capcom unleashing Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting on iOS devices next month

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2375 days, 5 hours, 24 minutes ago

The world of Monster Hunter will spread to another platform in June, franchise creator Capcom has announced. Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting is in development for iOS devices and will offer a "new intuitive control system...eschewing the typical D-pad" -- i.e., finger swipes and taps. It all looks a bit Infinity Blade-ish to us. (more)

iPad 2 light leakage due to faulty LG panels? (update)

We don't have official word from Apple on the subject, but we're hearing rumors that might explain why some iPad 2 backlights tend to bleed -- according to Digitimes' anonymous sources, LG Display was "forced to reduce its shipments in the first quarter due to light leakage problem for panels," and that Samsung took up the slack. New iMac Gets Respectable Repairability Score

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2388 days, 2 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, May 06, 2011 9:06:34 AM GMT
We already know that the new 21-inch iMac comes with a 21.5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixel IPS panel, one of Intel’s quad-core Core-i CPUs, AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics with 512MB, a 500GB HDD, 4GB of RAM, support for Facetime and Intel’s new Thunderbolt I/O technology. This tidy packet will set you back about $1,199 -- not a terrible deal. However, what you’ve got inside that case, you’re kind of stuck with, thanks to Apple’s apparent aversion to creating products that are easy to upgrade at home. Still, where... (more)

Could the iPhone 5 look like a beveled iPod touch?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2400 days, 3 hours, 32 minutes ago

See that up there? That could be your next iPhone -- or it could be a tear-shaped dream. It's a mock-up of what is said to be the iPhone 5, according to anonymous sources quoted by Joshua Topolsky. A continuation of the concepts laid out in our post-CES look at what's next for Apple, the design here is said to be thin, metal-backed, tapered, and sporting a 3.7-inch display with the same 960 x 640 resolution in the iPhone 4's retina display -- resulting in a slight drop from that phone's vaunted 326ppi de... Samsung strikes back at Apple with ten patent infringement claims

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2402 days, 5 hours, 28 minutes ago

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone: in the latest chapter of the Apple-Samsung dispute over their smartphones' resemblance, the latter company has just retaliated by filing lawsuits against Apple in three countries. Sammy's load of ammo include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, though we've yet to hear more details about these claims. Now we just sit back and enjoy the show -- popcorn, anyone? (more)

Alien Jihad is a game ... no, really, it is

Alien Jihad is a rather heavy handed satire game with social networking elements. While it's been designed to "bring back the simplicity and instant thrill of the great arcade shooters from the 1980’s and the FMV games of the early 90’s," the ability to share scores on sites like Facebook is a big part of the experience.
