App review: Infinity Blade (iPhone)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2478 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes ago
Friday, December 10, 2010 8:29:45 AM GMT
Aww, would you look at that, the iPhone's trying to play big boy games! Following in the well received footsteps of Rage HD, today marks the debut of Infinity Blade, the second in what's hopefully a wave of gorgeous-looking iOS games boasting advanced 3D graphics, if not 3D gameplay. Epic Games has put aside the chainsaw-equipped projectile weaponry of its wildly successful Gears of War console series to deliver the first mobile game built around its Unreal Engine 3. (more)

id's upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter RAGE is still almost a year away, but why should we wait that long before getting to blast some of the ugliest mutants this side of Total Recall? In order to keep the hype going for the full game, id has released RAGE on the iPhone as an on-rails shooter. Now that's good advertising! (more)

Apple Co-Founder Talks Android Superiority vs iOS

Oh Woz, between Dancing with the Stars and the Segway that seems to have been surgically attached to your feet, we just don't know what to make of you. Still, it's good to know you're not shy when it comes to talking about mobile phone platforms, even if it means backing Google's Android over the smartphone from the company you helped found. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2501 days, 18 hours, 31 minutes ago
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 9:27:09 AM GMT
A few weeks after third-party apps started filtering in, Google's launched its own Google Voice app for the iPhone, and it looks to have all the most important features: call and text support, push notifications, and voicemail access (including transcriptions). It's available right now -- US only at the moment -- on iPhones with iOS 3.1 or higher as long as you've got a valid Google Voice account set up... so get to it. (more)

Apple says tomorrow is 'just another day that you'll never forget,' teases iTunes announcement

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2501 days, 18 hours, 35 minutes ago
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 9:23:14 AM GMT
Whoa, what's this? Apple just updated its homepage with a new splash screen teasing an "exciting announcement from iTunes" at 10AM ET tomorrow, saying that "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget." All streaming subscription service based out of that North Carolina data center? More video content in the store? Apps for the Apple TV with the iOS 4.2 update? The Beatles? Whatever it is, we're digging for more, and we'll let you know as soon as we find out. (more)

Bootlace lets you install Froyo on your iPhone without a computer

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2506 days, 22 hours, 26 minutes ago
Friday, November 12, 2010 5:32:23 AM GMT
It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. Hit up the source link below for the complete installation instructions -- and insert your own joke h... (more)

Apple's dead pixel policy leaks out, up to 15 anomalies 'acceptable' on 22-inch and above screens?

There's nothing quite like coming home with a shiny new laptop only to find tiny black and white dots peppering your LCD, especially when the screen's manufacturer tells you that you're plumb out of luck. If you buy Apple, that scenario might honestly play out just the same, but the chart above could save you an embarrassing argument at your local Genius Bar (more)

W3C: A Case of Careless Management

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2513 days, 19 hours, 34 minutes ago
Friday, November 05, 2010 8:24:10 AM GMT
Yesterday I published a pretty entertaining story about how you can misrepresent characteristics of a product by skewing benchmarks (read the details here.) the article was based on a rather questionable browser benchmark procedure published by the W3C that aimed to indicate the HTML5 compliance of web browsers. The problem was that browser that cannot be compared and that there was, in particular, an IE version that was not available at the time of the test run. (more)

Steve Jobs, What Happened To You?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2529 days, 20 hours, 27 minutes ago

Imagine that. Apple now rakes in more than $20 billion in revenue per quarter and projects about $23 billion next quarter. There's a good chance that Apple will blow past that one again. That would make the company about twice the size of Intel and potentially 30-50% larger than Microsoft. Is that still the same company Michael Dell once suggested should shut down and its shareholders a few cents back? (more)

VZW will be bundling the WiFi-only iPads with its own MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot with pricing set at $630, $730 and $830 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants of Apple's tablet, respectively. Limera1n jailbreaks the iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.1, angers dev community and neuters one of our phones (video)

Looking for a jailbreak for your iPod touch or iPhone running iOS 4.1? Your chariot is named limera1n -- assuming you're willing to risk your device on a software developer showdown. The infamous Geohot just upstaged the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team by releasing a reportedly buggy beta exploit of his own, which you can find at our download link immediately below. It only works on Windows at the moment, hacks only official releases and iPhone 3GS isn't supported right now, and it claims to be an ... (more)

Meizu M8 ceases production amid pressure from Apple and intellectual property office -- Engadget

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2539 days, 20 hours, 3 minutes ago

Well, can't say we didn't see this coming; we're just surprised that it's taken this long for Meizu to take a hit over its notorious handset. In case you have no idea what we're talking about, earlier this month said Chinese company's been in heated talks with Apple due to the M8 smartphone bearing an "appearance roughly similar" to the iPhone. Seriously, that's the only reason Apple provided for the accusation, if CEO Jack Wong is to be trusted (and hey, he did kinda ask for it). (more)

As an added bonus, if you own the PC version, you won't have to pay a second time. And if you're totally new to the, uh, "game," it's temporarily down to $4.99 (more)

Review: Shoot to Kill

I look forward to playing iPhone shooters about as much as I look forward to my first prostate exam, because I imagine they’re quite similar. There’s an awkwardly painful use of touch immediately followed by feelings of helplessness and frustration, and you’re paying to have the experience, to boot. Whether FPS, TPS, or twin-stick, non-shmup shooters on this platform always seem to suffer from the same issues. (more)
