Google puts False Start SSL experiment down, nobody notices

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1986 days, 3 hours, 25 minutes ago
Friday, April 13, 2012 7:46:03 AM GMT
Back in September of 2010 Google started experimenting with a new Chrome feature called False Start, which cut the latency of SSL handshakes by up to 30 percent. While the delay in forging a secure connection never seemed like a major concern for most, the pause (which could be several hundred milliseconds long) before a browser starts pulling in actual content was too much to swallow for Mountain View engineers. Google's doing a lot to bolster its Android developers guide at the moment, with fresh design tips we covered yesterday and then a new section on accessibility arriving shortly after. The latter provides a bunch of suggestions on things like minimum button size (48dp or around 9mm), and also explains how to make use of free components (more)

Instagram for Android update adds support for tablets, WiFi handsets and SD card installs

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1992 days, 4 hours ago
Saturday, April 07, 2012 7:11:45 AM GMT
It's only been three days since Instagram launched on Android and the only thing that seems to match the influx of new users is the pace at which the company is pushing out updates to enhance support and tweak a few glitches. The latest one to hit today (1.0.3) promises expanded support for tablets and WiFi handsets, app installation on the SD card for storage-limited users and fixing an audio mute bug during capture. If you haven't delved into its photo sharing and filter features already, check out our... (more)

Viacom wins appeal against YouTube, gets another chance to prove copyright infringement

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1993 days, 4 hours, 6 minutes ago
Friday, April 06, 2012 7:05:16 AM GMT
It's been almost two years since YouTube's triumph in its copyright infringement case against Viacom. As is the way of things, Viacom appealed the decision, and now the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has decided to breathe new life into Viacom's case. Apparently, the appeals judge didn't see eye to eye with the District Court's ruling that no reasonable jury could have found that YouTube had actual knowledge or awareness of infringement on its site. ometimes, updates aren't as sweet as they initially sound. Such is the case with Android 4.0.4, which recently rolled out to owners of the GSM Galaxy Nexus. According to an increasingly vocal swath of members at xda-developers (and confirmed by a listing on Google's own Support page), there are mysterious signal issues now troubling the device (more)

Ice Cream Sandwich leaks for Samsung Galaxy Note (update)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1995 days, 2 hours, 5 minutes ago

For its part, Samsung has been none too coy about the upcoming Android 4.0 release for the Galaxy Note. So far, we know that it's set for a Q2 debut and will pack a new set of S Pen apps, but if you've longed to jump into the frozen goodness a bit early, today you can rejoice -- a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung's fabulous phablet has reared its head in the forums of RootzWiki. Curiously, the file is available only as an EXE, so you'll want to exercise a bit of due diligence with this one.... (more)

Is This a Render of the Google Nexus Tablet?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1995 days, 2 hours, 6 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 04, 2012 9:04:47 AM GMT
There's a JPG floating around that is a supposed leaked image of Google's upcoming Nexus tablet. The image shows every angle save for the back, but what's blatantly obvious is that it's not a 7-inch tablet. Based on the icon sizes and spacing, the render looks to be a 10-inch device sporting Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich." (more)

Hackers Loading Fake Facebook Apps in Chrome Web Store

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2003 days, 2 hours, 44 minutes ago

It's bad enough that consumers are downloading malware to their Android devices thanks to fake apps on Google Play. Now they have even more to worry about when browsing through the apps listed in Google's Chrome Web Store. It's no wonder the industry is trying to shift over to pure HTML5 -- it just doesn't seem safe to download and install anything anymore. (more)

Google May Be Developing Motion Interface for Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2020 days, 1 hour, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:20:49 AM GMT
A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google is working to turn a device's front-facing camera into a motion-input system, allowing consumers to use gestures instead of greasing up the screen with fingerprints. If granted, the company could reportedly take this patent down several avenues, including incorporating the technology into Android itself, saving the tech for Motorola, or hording the patent for use against rivals Apple and Microsoft. Project "Fishbowl" constructed 100 handsets from off-the-shelf components that were secure enough that staffers could use them without speaking in code. Google tests the 'do not track' waters with a Chrome extension (Update)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2034 days, 1 hour, 27 minutes ago
Saturday, February 25, 2012 9:44:35 AM GMT
Well, that didn't take long. One day after agreeing to implement a do not track button as part of a new consumer bill of rights, Google has given the people what they want... sort of. Keep My Opt-Outs is a Chrome extension, developed by the Mountain View team, that will prevent advertisers from using your browsing history against you. Presumably, this function will get built straight into the browser one day but, for now, you have to go dig it up in the Chrome Web Store -- far from an ideal solution. Sti... (more)
