Microsoft Launches 'Smoked by Windows Phone' Campaign

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1973 days, 53 minutes ago
Saturday, February 25, 2012 9:35:13 AM GMT
If you can cast your mind back as far as CES in January, you might remember Microsoft's little Windows Phone marketing stunt that saw the company challenge smartphone owners to a little cell phone quick draw. The idea was to race two phones, one Windows Phone and the other not, and see which of them could perform a specific task the fastest. Microsoft was offering $100 to anyone who could beat a Windows Phone. The losers? They had to go on camera and admit that their phone "got smoked by a Windows Phone." (more)

Samsung Unveils Two New Galaxy Phones Headed for Europe

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1976 days, 2 hours, 17 minutes ago
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 8:11:32 AM GMT
Earlier this year, Samsung surprised us all by confirming that the Galaxy S III wouldn't be unveiled at Mobile World Congress at the end of this month. Heck, the company wasn't even going to be hosting a press event. However, just because the company isn't going all out this year, that doesn't mean MWC will be a Samsung-free affair. The company just this week announced two new handsets that we're sure will be on hand at the conference for journalists to get a proper look at. (more)

On the heels of announcing a new privacy policy that shares user data across all of its sites without an opt-out option, Google has introduced a service that will pay users with $25 worth of Amazon gift cards in exchange for tracking their every move on the Internet. The program is called Screenwise, and all users need to do is install a browser extension that sees where they go and what they do. (more)

Google makes 'next gen personal communications device,' is testing it in employee abodes

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1985 days, 1 hour, 54 minutes ago
Monday, February 13, 2012 8:33:54 AM GMT
We first heard about Google's foray into home-based hardware late last week, when it asked the FCC for Special Temporary Authority (STA) to have employees test an "entertainment device" in their homes (as opposed to a lab). According to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, it's rumored to be a Sonos-like device related to the Android@Home Tungsten hub we saw at Google I/O last year. It appears, however, that's not all Google's got in store, as some information has trickled out about another Google... (more)

Apple Now Worth More than Google and Microsoft Combined

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1985 days, 2 hours ago
Monday, February 13, 2012 8:27:44 AM GMT
Apple has a lot of money. This we know. However, the company passed a jaw-dropping milestone this week that accurately illustrates just how much the Cupertino-based company is actually worth. Apple shares surged to an all-time high yesterday, passing the $490 mark and closing at $493.17. This is up $16.49 from just one day previously and represents a 3.46 percent increase for the day. More interestingly, it pushed Apple's capitalization to just shy of $460 billion. This is more than rivals Microsoft and ... (more)

It reportedly suffered a slight delay due to some disagreement with local officials over just how its thousands of miles of wires would be hung, but Google announced today that it's finally ready to begin the rollout of its Google Fiber network in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Expectedly, that effort will initially focus on the network's backbone (more)

AT&T connected Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S get Android Market Google Wallet installs

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1995 days, 24 minutes ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:04:13 AM GMT
So far, Google Wallet has its official US availability on NFC-compatible handsets limited by unfriendly carriers with their own mobile payment services in mind, but it appears that is no longer the case for Nexus handsets with AT&T SIMs inserted. Droid-Life reported the app is available in the market for AT&T-SIM'd HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus phones, which we were able to confirm on our own device (over any connection, as long as the AT&T card is in, switching back to a T-Mobile SIM made it disappear ... Google Fined $660,000 For Making Google Maps Free

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1995 days, 30 minutes ago

A recent ruling in a French commercial court may see Google put into much larger legal bind globally thanks to the "anti-competitive" nature of Google Maps. Why? Because Google was offering a service that one French company provided for free, thus the latter cried "anti-competitive" to the French court system. (more)

Did the Galaxy S III just pop up on Samsung's support site?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2000 days, 1 hour, 20 minutes ago

Seriously, we can't caveat this one enough -- there is no way of knowing if this is in fact the Galaxy S III or, if it is, when it might come to market -- but, it looks like Samsung's "next big smartphone" just made a cameo on the company's support pages. Listed as the GT-i9300, the mystery device reared its head over at the Global Download Center of the United Arab Emerites site. If Sammy is to keep with its naming scheme i93XX would be a flagship device (more)

We've both downloaded and installed the mobile version of Steam -- now available as a free beta download for Android and iOS -- but where they found Mac and PC games for sale, along with the ability to chat with friends, browse profiles and read gaming news, we were greeted with red text that states our accounts are not part of the beta. It remains to be seen if they'll be the big game-changer in education that Google hopes they will be, but the company is making some progress at getting its Chromebooks into schools. The latest push is a deal with three US school districts, which will see some 27,000 Chromebooks land in the hand of students in Iowa, Illinois and South Carolina. As CNET reports, South Carolina's Richland School District Two is making by far the biggest investment of the lot, ordering 19,000 Chromebooks that will be used a... (more)

Google Privacy Policy Will Track Users Across All Products

Google this week announced changes to its privacy policy that will see the company track and consolidate user information across all Google services. This means that what you do on YouTube, for example, could be used to offer you targeted ads with other Google services. Though it might be advantageous to have Google inform you you're going to be late for that Google Calendar appointment based on your location and the level of traffic in that area, it's not hard to see how this information might make peop... Google Sky Map boldly explores open source galaxy

Via its Research Blog, Google has announced the donation of the Sky Map project to the open source community. Originally developed by Googlers during their "20% time," the stellar application was launched in 2009 to showcase the sensors in first generation Android handsets. Four years and over 20 million downloads later, Sky Map's code will be donated to the people -- with Carnegie Mellon University taking the reins on further development through "a series of student projects." Judge attacks Oracle's 'stratospheric' damages claim against Google, postpones trial

When the company initially demanded $6.1 billion from Google in recompense for alleged violations of its Java patents, Alsup laughed that figure out of court and suggested $100 million might be closer to the mark (more)

How-to: use Google Music from anywhere (yes, outside of the United States)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2069 days, 2 hours, 27 minutes ago

Now that Google Music has finally clawed its way out of the realm of beta-ware, anybody in the US can sign up to play without an invitation. Of course, that leaves many folks out of the equation, so we thought it a good time to point out at least one other route to let you get involved in the service, no matter where you live. See, the rub seems to be that Google checks your IP address on your first attempt to log in, and accept its terms of use -- only the first time, and yeah, you're definitely going t... (more)

It's clearly not as blasphemous as you may have been led to believe, as the fine folks in Google's mobile department have just produced an iOS-specific web app for Google Music Beta. For those who've forgotten, Music Beta was launched a few months back at Google I/O, giving audio archivists the chance to upl... (more)
