Sony brings new media streaming box and updated Google TV hardware to CEDIA

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2208 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes ago
Friday, September 09, 2011 7:16:26 AM GMT
Yesterday was the big day for Sony's 4K projector (still no exact price, but reps mentioned it would be sub $25k -- we know you can afford that) and the US debut of its funky 3D helmet, but now that the CEDIA show floor is open we stopped by its booth and got our hands on a couple of other treats. In one corner we've got its Google TV hardware, updated with a near-release upgrade to Honeycomb and showing off some highlighted apps picked by Google (more)

Now that eager hackers have actually managed to shoehorn the latest flavor of Android onto Logitech Revue units, the question is what does it actually look like? We got a few screenshots at Google I/O but now there's pictures and videos popping up all over. (more)

LG Optimus 3D review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2247 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes ago
Monday, August 01, 2011 7:52:12 AM GMT
Cilantro might be the most polarizing thing on this planet. Some people can't eat a fish taco without it, others cry frothy tears of dishsoap at its mere mention. The same may well be true of the LG Optimus 3D (known as the Thrill 4G in the US). We already felt a little torn about the device when we first got our hands on it back in February. Sure, it packed some extra heft and, ahem, Android 2.2.2. (more)

Google celebrates Alexander Calder and spinning things with HTML5 doodle

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2255 days, 4 hours, 3 minutes ago
Sunday, July 24, 2011 9:22:47 AM GMT
How to honor the life's work of an artist who has been dead for more than a quarter-century? Why, an HTML5 doodle on the Google homepage, of course. The search giant paid homage to Alexander Calder, the celebrated inventor of the mobile sculpture with its first doodle created entirely in HTML5 canvas. Those using a laptop with an accelerometer and an updated browser can move the coded sculpture around with their curser. Ironically, we had some difficulty playing around with the image on our mobile devices. (more)

Google acquires PittPatt, wants to know you on a face-to-face basis

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2255 days, 4 hours, 4 minutes ago
Sunday, July 24, 2011 9:21:35 AM GMT
Google's quietly pitter-pattering its acquisitive ways back into the controversial realm of facial recognition technology. To do that, the company busted out its oversized wallet to fold Pittsburgh-based PittPatt into the Mountain View borg. Founded by a trio of PhD's from Carnegie Mellon University, this three-man strong outfit specializes in the sort of object recognition software you've come to know as "tagging." Is this a reversal of the Do No Evil tech giant's prior waffling on the dubious visioning... (more)

When doing Google searches for high profile games such as Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Battlefield 3 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the ad had a chance of sneakily appearing. (more)

AT&T launches Sony Ericsson Xperia Play with Gingerbread, blue color option

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2266 days, 5 hours, 44 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 13, 2011 7:41:06 AM GMT
Well, looky here. AT&T has very quietly revealed it's going to sell the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. No press release, no splashy press conference backed by a cheesy disco soundtrack. The thing just showed up at the carrier's holiday preview event here in New York City. We're told it runs Gingerbread, which would make it AT&T's second Android 2.3 handset behind the newly launched HTC Status. Alas, AT&T won't say just yet when the Play will be available or how much it will cost on contract, but ... (more)

Acer AC700 WiFi goes on sale, is your $350 ticket to the Chromebook club

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2267 days, 5 hours, 18 minutes ago

Good niches don't come cheap, but while $350 isn't exactly a steal, Acer's new AC700 will, at the very least, get you into the wonderful cloud-based world of Chrome OS for a good deal less than, say, Samsung's Series 5. Of course, there are certain sacrifices to be made for the sake of affordability, namely the fact that the current version of Acer's entry into the space is WiFi-only -- a 3G version is set to hit later this summer for, one assumes, a noticeable price bump. The AC700 has an Atom N570 proc... (more)

Google Maps Transit Navigation beta for Android hands-on (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2272 days, 3 hours, 8 minutes ago
Thursday, July 07, 2011 10:16:58 AM GMT
Earlier this afternoon, Google pushed Maps v5.7 to the Android Market. The app's Transit Navigation (beta) feature brings GPS stop-by-stop nav to public transit systems in over 400 cities around the world, helping you find the subway or bus stop, then letting you know exactly when to get off as you ride. There are obvious benefits to using this in a foreign city, where alert-enabled (English!) directions could potentially save you hours of frustration. (more)

The Nexus One and Nexus S have one thing in common: They’re both official ‘Google Phones,’ which means they get Android updates as soon as they’re available. The fact that you don’t have to wait for your carrier or manufacturer to get their ducks in a line is incredibly valuable to some users, so both phones have proved quite popular. (more)
