Never would we have guessed that third-party wireless retailers would be aiming to launch AT&T's powerhouse Atrix 4G for just $150 on contract -- $200 or $250, sure, but not $150. (more)

Google is Really Disappointed with App Sales

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2395 days, 4 minutes ago

Over the last few years we seen more Android device launches than we care to remember. However, despite the fact that there’s no shortage of Android devices or users, there seems to be a shortage of people actually paying cold, hard cash for Android apps. Forbes cites Google’s Android Platform Manager Eric Chu as saying Google is “not happy” about the purchases of paid apps. (more)

Google adds AT&T billing to Android Market payment options

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2430 days, 22 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, December 23, 2010 9:03:26 AM GMT
Having rolled out to T-Mobile just about a year ago, Google's celebrating the anniversary of its Android Market carrier billing feature in the US by expanding the service to AT&T. Put simply, this means that if you're using an Android device on an AT&T line, you'll no longer need to use a credit card -- you can just bill your purchases straight to your AT&T bill, which is painless... almost too painless, really, if you're the compulsive type. And no, we're not aware of a way to bill a Froyo u... (more)

Dungeon Defenders: First Wave brings Unreal Engine to Android this month

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2433 days, 21 hours, 3 minutes ago
Monday, December 20, 2010 10:16:08 AM GMT
Along with Rage HD, Infinity Blade has been one of the titles to really solidify iOS' position as the leader in mobile gaming right now, but that's not to say Android isn't in hot pursuit: besides this Zeus we have on the horizon, Gingerbread improves gaming support on the API level -- and now we're seeing our first Unreal Engine 3-based title make the leap. Dungeon Defenders: First Wave, which just launched on iOS, is coming to Android 2.1 and above on December 23rd bringing with it an online, multiplay... (more)

Google partners with Verizon for free 3G data allowance with every Chrome OS netbook

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2444 days, 23 hours, 11 minutes ago
Thursday, December 09, 2010 8:08:06 AM GMT
There you go, folks. Google says it wants you always connected, now it's helping you do it. 100MB of free Verizon data, each month for 24 months, will be yours as a complimentary extra when buying a Chrome OS netbook. $9.99 will give you unlimited access for a single day and there are no contracts to fiddle with. Obviously, and sadly, this is a US-only hookup. If nothing else, this announcement provides some neat context to the joint net neutrality policy that Google and Verizon dished out back in August. Fox.com joins NBC, ABC and CBS by blocking Google TV

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2472 days, 1 hour, 49 minutes ago
Friday, November 12, 2010 5:30:12 AM GMT
Looks like Fox has finally made a decision, following the other major networks, Hulu and several cable channels by opting to block streaming video on its website from Google TV devices. Blocking by Flash ID is the order of the day and takes simple browser workarounds out of play, so unless users want to go the PlayOn route, there's large swaths of legitimate video on the web that's now inaccessible. Google Maps Blamed for Costa Rica Invasion

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2476 days, 23 hours, 27 minutes ago

Ah, Google Maps. Where would I be without you? Lost, that's where. Lost and probably relying on my street guide to get me from A to B. However, as we all know, Google Maps is not infallible. Sometimes there are quicker ways to get me where I'm going and Google doesn't know about them; other times Google Maps will screw up a nation's border marking and cause an invasion. Wait, what? W3C: A Case of Careless Management

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2478 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes ago

Yesterday I published a pretty entertaining story about how you can misrepresent characteristics of a product by skewing benchmarks (read the details here.) the article was based on a rather questionable browser benchmark procedure published by the W3C that aimed to indicate the HTML5 compliance of web browsers. The problem was that browser that cannot be compared and that there was, in particular, an IE version that was not available at the time of the test run. (more)

Google, Eric Schmidt Convicted of Defamation Because of 'Suggestions' in Search

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2516 days, 1 hour, 27 minutes ago

If you're a Google user, you are more than likely familiar with the company's Suggest feature, which shows you a list of possible searches related to the keywords you've entered into the search bar. Though it seems obvious that this feature is automated and operates by displaying the most common searches related to what you've searched for, a French court has convicted Google of defamation after a user complained that his name had been associated with the terms 'rapist' and 'Satanist'. Wi-Fi is awesome. Just think of the days before Wi-Fi when you had to be tethered to the wall to get on the internet. For a desktop, it wasn't a big deal, but Wi-Fi has changed the way that we compute on laptops. (more)

Editorial: Firmware, forums, and desperation -- the dark side of Android hacking

That picture above is no joke -- that's where I ended up last night trying to revive my Droid X review unit. It was fun, in a hacky mad-scientist sort of way, but it's also really sad -- a testament to how Google approves Android device hacking with a wink and a nod, but doesn't provide any safety nets for its most passionate users. You're out hunting and you're not having much luck. No animals have happened past and you're getting extremely bored. What to do, what to do? How about using Google's fibers for target practice? According to IT News, network engineering manager for Google, Vijay Gill, last week told the AusNOG conference that people in Oregon were using the fiber insulators for target practice because they were bored. It's become such a problem that Google is moving its fibers underground (more)

Pictured: First Look at the T-Mobile G2 Android

The G1 was the first Android phone to launch after the iPhone, and the smartphone market was a very different place back then. The G1 was expected to unseat the iPhone as king of the smartphones, or at least offer some kind of competition. However, it wasn't until we started seeing Android phones from several more manufacturers did Android really start to take off. (more)

Some DROID 2 Users Experiencing Signal Issue

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2558 days, 23 hours, 6 minutes ago

When Apple launched the iPhone 4, a number of customers complained that when they held the phone a certain way, their reception was greatly diminished. In a press conference held a few weeks after the phone's launch, Jobs demonstrated that the problem could be reproduced on a number of other smartphones. This was a problem that was present in any phone with an internal antenna, he said. If you cover the portion of the phone with the antenna, you're going to get the same result. Though the makers of the... (more)
