Rejoice, oh Android lovers. Thy OS of choice has finally graduated to the point where its latest variant is also the most used -- a statistic that is likely to last for only a day given Google's intent to reveal Android 2.2, or Froyo, at its I/O conference tomorrow. (more)

The battle for minds is well and truly on now, and if there was any doubt that Google and Adobe are cozying up together to take on Apple, let it now be extinguished. TechCrunch is reporting that the latest version of Android -- you know, the one with the 450 percent performance improvement and buttery smooth Flash playback -- will, upon updating, guide you to visit a selection of Flash-enabled websites. NVIDIA puts its Tegra 2 eggs in Android's basket, aims to topple Apple's A4

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2710 days, 23 hours, 10 minutes ago

Microsoft's Kin One and Kin Two might not turn out to be the most auspicious devices for Tegra's debut in the smartphone arena, but NVIDIA seems to be learning from its mistakes. Admitting that the company committed too strongly to Microsoft with the first-gen iteration, Jen-Hsun Huang has now said that the second generation of Tegra will look to Android devices first and foremost. Google has a habit of giving future versions really tasty sounding codenames. Be it Cupcake, Éclair or Froyo, they all sound delicious. However, Froyo (that’s Android 2.2) is sounding more and more delicious by the day because when it hits my Nexus One, Android will be 450 percent faster than it is now. (more)

Android 2.2 Does USB Tethering, Wi-Fi Hot Spot

The next version of Google's Android platform, codenamed Froyo, looks to kick Apple where it hurts. While we've already learned that v2.2 brings native Flash support, more memory, and apparently a huge 450-percent boost in overall performance (which 2.1 was supposed to offer but apparently did the opposite), the next spike in the groin is the platform's ability to not only provide native USB tethering support, but act as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Oh sure, you've seen your disgustingly hairy cousin solve a Rubik's Cube in 3 minutes and 13.4 seconds, and we've seen quite a few sophisticated robots do it in far less time. But in the latest episode of "Yes, Droid Really Does," we've got Motorola's darling solving a Lego-encased Cube in just over 24 seconds. Let's recap: a Droid, a Mindstorms NXT monstrosity, a Rubik's Cube and faux techno. Is there any chance you aren't clicking through to watch this video? (more)

Google Chrome: faster than a flying potato

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2722 days, 21 hours, 34 minutes ago

Google's never been shy to make claims that Chrome is the fastest browser on the planet, but it's truly pulled out all the stops to drive that point home for its latest beta. Rather than rely on some simple benchmarks, Google decided to test Chome against some other things that are fast -- namely, a potato cannon, sound waves, and lightning. We won't spoil all the surprise for you, but you can rest assured that Chrome comes out looking pretty good, and that everything else gets a little messy. Head on pa... (more)

Google's Android triumphs over Apple's iPhone

Google's Android has finally managed to triumph over Apple's iPhone by capturing 46 percent of the US market share.
Meanwhile, the iPhone's notoriously closed OS lost three percentage points as it dropped from 45 to 42 percent. "In March 2010, there were 34 Android devices from 12 manufacturers available to consumers. Two Android devices, the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, collectively represented 96% of Android traffic in September 2009. Seven months later, 11 devices represented 96% of Android traffic," A... (more)

Microsoft says Android infringes on its patents, licenses HTC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2730 days, 9 hours, 49 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 8:52:56 AM GMT
The lawyers up in Redmond seem to have been woken from their slumber with the sudden realization that -- oh look! -- Google's Android OS infringes on Microsoft's boatload of software patents. How specifically it does so is not identified, but Microsoft believes that elements from both the user interface and the underlying operating system are in violation of its rights. This is very much in keeping with the Windows maker's crusade to assert patent claims over Linux, which in the past has garnished it wit... (more)

Firefox now available for Android 2.0 and above, still at pre-alpha stage

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2730 days, 9 hours, 50 minutes ago

Fennec, Mozilla's codeword for mobile Firefox builds, has just made its pre-alpha debut on Android. The tastefully named Vladimir Vukićević informs us that it's pretty much a debug release, with unoptimized memory utilization and some quirks rebooting the app when it's started and when add-ons are installed, but it is at a stage where the devs felt they could get useful feedback from a broader user base. It's not yet available on the Android Market, so you'll be needing to download it from the link below... (more)

Google, Broadcom close to enabling 802.11n on Nexus One?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2734 days, 22 hours, 41 minutes ago

We need a name for this whole drama -- we like "n-Gate," but it's a little too close to N-Gage for comfort. Anyhow, you might recall that Google briefly listed 802.11n support in the Nexus One around the time of its release, then wiped all mention of it only to have iFixit's teardown reveal on no uncertain terms that the Broadcom-sourced wireless chipset was definitely capable of rocking it. YouTube rental selection expanded; sadly, most films still lack explosions

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2734 days, 22 hours, 42 minutes ago

Are you looking for yet another way to stream Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired? Netflix and iTunes not doing it for you? Apparently YouTube's first, tentative step into on-demand rentals (some sort of Sundance Film Festival cross-promotion early this year) went well enough, and the company's started offering an extended range of movie and TV episodes for your viewing pleasure. Depending on the flick, anywhere between $.99 and $3.99 will get you 48 hours access, paid through Google Check-Out. (more)

Who Has Fastest, Cheapest Internet in the World?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2736 days, 22 hours, 48 minutes ago

Despite how often we hear that the U.S. lags behind other countries in terms of internet speed (which is still true), the fastest internet in the world, according to a report from Akamai Technologies, is in Berkeley, California at an average speed of 18.7Mbps. In fact, the second and third fastest internet offerings in the world are also in the U.S., in Chapel Hill, NC (average speed: 17.5Mbps) and Stanford, Calif. (average speed: 17.0Mbps) Of course, the obvious linkage there is that the internet is tie... (more)

Google vs. Apple: Battle of the Copycats

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2736 days, 22 hours, 49 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 7:52:17 PM GMT
So there you have it. Google will release its own tablet to steal a piece of the iPad pie. Lately, it seems, Google puts quite a bit of effort into annoying Apple. Conceivably, Google has already become the new Microsoft by trying to be everything to everyone and this upcoming tablet may just be another example of how Google is much more a content provider than a hardware company. But there is also a real chance that Google can succeed and beat Apple’s iPad—the iPad isn’t as new and magical as Apple clai... (more)

Steve Jobs: Folks Who Want Porn Can Buy Android

Since Apple has the authority to approve what's sold on its App Store for things that'll run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, it can also control what users of its devices aren't allowed to see. One such category of things that Apple wants to keep away from its App Store is anything of pornographic nature, and if consumers aren't happy about that, then Steve Jobs will point them to buying an Android phone.
