While many longtime game fans sneer at mobile gaming, I've always tried to keep an open mind about it. Done right, a touch-based game is perfectly valid as a form of interactive entertainment, and while there are plenty of banal and pointless titles clogging up app stores, there remain surprisingly wonderful offerings. A tad less wanted

Need for Speed Most Wanted is quite an anticipated game for many racing fans, heralding a welcome return to Criterion's open-world style, with tons of stylish cars and modes to boot. Naturally, this is an opportunity for EA to pare down the franchise and package for mobile devices in the form of Need for Speed Most Wanted for Android and iOS. (more)

Preview: Borderlands Legends

If you followed Destructoid at all last month, you know that the site was pretty collectively excited about Borderlands 2. Of course, in the fast cars, loose joysticks world of videogames, a month ago is practically forever ago and I know many of you have already finished gorging voraciously on looting until you were fuller than you would have liked. Unless you also caught wind of that recent DLC release, calling to you like a 2,000 calorie dessert at the end of a belt loosening meal. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1874 days, 4 hours, 51 minutes ago
Wednesday, October 24, 2012 8:38:51 AM GMT
Cave's previously Windows Mobile-exclusive bullet-hell shmup DoDonPachi Maximum is headed to an iDevice near you this Monday, October 29, according to Siliconera. The game, which includes ships from DoDonPachi: Blissful Death and DoDonPachi: Resurrection, requires an iThing no older than an iPhone 4 or an iPad 2, though that does translate to iPhone 5 screen resolution compatibility. The universal app will cost $6.99 at launch, and then jump up to $11.99. (more)

Our electronic world, for all of the new abilities it can give us, is infinitely more fragile than it once was. Some modern devices literally shatter when dropped a few feet. Hell, even the more robust devices in our silicon armories can still look like sadness and poo after one good smack on a concrete sidewalk. (more)

Infinity Blade Dungeons pushed back to 2013

Dungeon-crawling iOS spin-off Infinity Blade Dungeons is going to miss its target release date, instead coming to Apple devices some time in 2013. In the world of games that are released roughly 2.1 seconds after they're announced, it's quite the postponement. (more)

A thankfully short war

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1886 days, 5 hours, 25 minutes ago

I whiled away many hours in my youth playing Cannon Fodder on the Amiga, mostly replaying failed missions. It could be a brutal game, and its anti-war message was completely lost on my young mind, but I delighted in my victories and mourned the losses of my fallen soldiers all the same. Tiny Troopers, an iOS title recently ported to PC, is undoubtedly inspired by that classic -- it's an unapologetic homage. (more)

Portabliss: Rayman Jungle Run (iOS / Android)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1895 days, 4 hours, 44 minutes ago
Wednesday, October 03, 2012 8:46:23 AM GMT
I think I'm starting to understand a paradox embraced by the level designers of Rayman Jungle Run. To do good, and to earn praise from their players, they must do evil. They must string together chasms, ropes, hills and hazards in a way that rewards concentration and casts failure into a bottomless pit. It's a thankless job that thrives on devious impulses, and I am grateful for it. (more)

Review: Super Hexagon

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1917 days, 4 hours, 58 minutes ago

Super Hexagon is a game that makes your eyeballs feel like they're being forcibly twisted against your will while still in their sockets. It is a game that makes your brain feel like it's being torn up and stitched back together by a drunken doctor in a back alley. It will even, at times, make you question whether you're enjoying the experience or it's simply the pulsating visuals sending you subliminal messages that trick you into revelry. (more)

Phosphor Games knocked it out of the park with The Dark Meadow, providing a genuinely enthralling mobile game that had an interesting story and one Hell of a primary antagonist. Nevertheless, the Unreal-powered combat crawler still stood a little in the shadow of Infinity Blade, featuring a similar style of progression and screen-swiping swordplay. (more)

Middle Manager of Justice's accidental launch becomes beta test

Double Fine's free-to-play iOS game Middle Manager of Justice accidentally launched on the App Store on September 5, as an incomplete, buggy version of the final game. Double Fine pulled it quickly, but not before potential players caught wind and downloaded it. Lead developer Kee Chi explains to Gamasutra how this all went down, and why it's not so bad in the end. Harebrained Schemes, which hauled in a whopping $1.8 million on Kickstarter in April, has revealed the first in-game assets for its current project, Shadowrun Returns. The studio has settled on creating 2D isometric backgrounds and 3D polygonal characters. The character images feature concept art and in-game models for some of the different races, including trolls, orks and boring ol' humans. (more)

As a general rule, I'm a hug fan of free-falling/free-running games, which explains my love for the Jumping Flash franchise and Mirror's Edge, so this was right up my alley. While it made a decent splash on PC, thankfully the game eventually came to iOS and broadened its audience for $3. Now you can have it for a buck. (more)

No More Heroes gets a free-to-play social mobile game
