Why the iPhone is Crippled on Verizon's Network

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2385 days, 14 hours, 43 minutes ago
Wednesday, January 12, 2011 7:55:29 AM GMT
The problem stems from the fact that Verizon's widespread CDMA network only supports a single session of either voice or data, but not both. This is an issue with any CDMA smartphone, not just the new iPhone. (more)

Earth Defense Force ... on my iPhone?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2390 days, 12 hours, 53 minutes ago
Friday, January 07, 2011 9:46:00 AM GMT
I feel like all the sudden, my precious Earth Defense Force is going through some sort of renaissance. A few months ago, I was happily replaying the 360 version with one of my best friends in mad pursuit of the Genocide Gun, saying, "One of these days, maybe they'll make a sequel..." And then the next thing I know, there's a new game on the way, EDF 4 announced, a PSP version, and Earth Defense Force Legend for mobile phones. Wait a sec ... make that five! (more)

Nvidia Says More CPU Cores are Better (& Why)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2418 days, 14 hours, 8 minutes ago

Today's smartphones have chips inside that can produce output that surpasses that of a Nintendo Wii – which is very impressive for something that fits inside your pocket. But those right now are single-core, and as any computer enthusiast now knows from their desktops and laptops, more cores tend to make for a better computing experience. (more)

id's upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter RAGE is still almost a year away, but why should we wait that long before getting to blast some of the ugliest mutants this side of Total Recall? In order to keep the hype going for the full game, id has released RAGE on the iPhone as an on-rails shooter. Now that's good advertising! (more)

Touchscreen phones get psuedo-buttons with Tactile Plus stickers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2435 days, 15 hours, 8 minutes ago
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 7:31:09 AM GMT
It's difficult to execute a Hadouken -- or any special maneuver, for that matter -- on the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV without keeping a constant eye on the on-screen controls. It's a problem that many games on touchscreened smartphones suffer from; fortunately, it's a problem that can be solved with a little outside the box thinking. Why not just add some buttons to your phone using the reusable Tactile+Plus sticker set pictured above? (more)

The next update for the iPhone version of Street FIghter IV adds at least one new fighter: Sagat. One of the screenshots included with the update also shows Dee Jay, who, curiously, wasn't announced. Tiger uppercuts and MAXIMUM pants aren't the only new additions to the phone fighter, however: the update also adds a new feature that sounds like it's straight out of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. iPhone 4 Glass Breaking 82% More Than on 3GS

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2475 days, 15 hours, 51 minutes ago
Thursday, October 14, 2010 6:47:41 AM GMT
The iPhone 4 has 100 percent more glass than the iPhone 3GS (or the 3G or the original EDGE model), so it would only make sense that it's twice as likely that the latest version to suffer from cracked glass. As it turns out, yes, the iPhone 4 is significantly more prone to glass fragility issues. Third-party service provider SquareTrade analyzed iPhone accidents for over 20,000 iPhone 4's covered by the company and found an 82 percent increase in reported broken screens compared to the iPhone 3GS.
