Civilization creator gives thumbs-up to social gaming

Civilization creator Sid Meier has given the thumbs-up to social gaming by describing the genre as an exciting "new frontier." "[But] I don't think it replaces any other forms of gaming. It just is attractive to a different type of gamer...and enriches the world of gaming as opposed to one thing replacing the other," Meier told IndustryGamers. (more)

Jon Stewart Slams Apple over Gizmodo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 21 hours, 21 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:45:05 AM GMT
Wednesday night Jon Stewart planted behind his desk on The Daily Show and blasted Apple over the whole Gizmodo raid. Naturally he takes a comical route throughout the entire report, holding up the iPad to his ear and saying that he likes to tell the kids he's shrinking. He also admitted that he rarely does product endorsement (unlike American Idol), so covering the Apple issue was supposedly his personal address to a company he's admired for decades. (more)

Steve Jobs just posted an open letter of sorts explaining Apple's position on Flash, going back to his company's long history with Adobe and expounding upon six main points of why he thinks Flash is wrong for mobile devices. HTML5 naturally comes up, along with a few reasons you might not expect. Here's the breakdown: (more)

iPhone tethering on AT&T still waiting on better network performance

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 22 hours, 45 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:21:13 AM GMT
AT&T's own Ralph de la Vega mentioned as early as November of 2008 that you'd be able to tether your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem "soon," but here we are some ten months after the initial announcement of official tethering support in the platform and there's no sign of it. Considering that many iPhone carriers around the world deployed it as soon as Apple had it ready -- and many more came online over the months to follow -- it seems that AT&T's silence on the issue has spoken ... Google's Android has finally managed to triumph over Apple's iPhone by capturing 46 percent of the US market share.
Meanwhile, the iPhone's notoriously closed OS lost three percentage points as it dropped from 45 to 42 percent. "In March 2010, there were 34 Android devices from 12 manufacturers available to consumers. Two Android devices, the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, collectively represented 96% of Android traffic in September 2009. Seven months later, 11 devices represented 96% of Android traffic," A... (more)

We're going to play a little game today. Here's the only rule: try not to be impressed by the graphical fidelity of these Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge screens. Don't marvel at the vibrant pirate spitting contest you see above. Don't cower at the menacing and highly-detailed visage of LeChuck himself. Scoff at the wares in the antique shop. Go ahead -- be unimpressed. (more)

Apple to Gizmodo: Return That $5,000 iPhone 4G

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2681 days, 9 hours, 4 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 8:02:18 PM GMT
Various reports are indicating that Gizmodo paid $5,000 (plus a bonus for traffic) or $10,000 for the next-generation iPhone previewed on Monday, depending on the source. Gawker Media founder Nick Denton clarified the pricetag last night here on Twitter, saying that the company paid the lower fee and that "we'll do anything for a story." Either way, Gizmodo racked in over 15 million page views by the end of the day, and may have damaged its relationship with Apple in the process. (more)

Steve Jobs: Folks Who Want Porn Can Buy Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2681 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 7:50:38 PM GMT
Since Apple has the authority to approve what's sold on its App Store for things that'll run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, it can also control what users of its devices aren't allowed to see. One such category of things that Apple wants to keep away from its App Store is anything of pornographic nature, and if consumers aren't happy about that, then Steve Jobs will point them to buying an Android phone. iPhone OS 4.0 beta 2 hits the scene

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2682 days, 9 hours, 54 minutes ago

That's right: a little under two weeks since the launch event and the release of the first beta, Apple has pushed out beta 2 of its next-gen iPhone OS 4.0. Considering that our units have seemingly gotten buggier over time the longer they've had beta 1 loaded, we've got high hopes for this one -- hopes that stand a very real chance of being crushed, of course, as long as this isn't a gold build. Guess we're still months off from that, huh? Stay tuned for a report of anything that's changed, new, awesome,... (more)

You are looking at Apple's next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details. While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. iPhone OS 4 reveals its social side: Facebook integration?

Users of webOS and HTC Sense can skip ahead, you're already familiar with tight social networking integration on your handsets. Now Apple appears ready to join the social, so to speak. New evidence of low-level Facebook event and contacts integration has been revealed in iPhone OS 4 hinting at the possibility of unified Calendar and Contacts apps from Apple when the OS launches this summer on, um, this device. Web site Website Gunning for Safety says that Apple appears to have created a "separate type of... (more)

Gamertell Review: Apple’s iPad as a game system

There’s no doubt that the iPhone became a surprise cannonball in the gaming industry. What started as a mobile device meant to be reliant on web applications, became a mobile powerhouse that forced Sony and Nintendo to acknowledge it - even if those acknowledgments came in the form of “bite sized” dismissals - and spawned great games such as Aurora Feint, Fieldrunners and Rolando, plus convinced more popular companies to bring over properties including Final Fantasy, Doom II and Need for Speed. The Dogs of War: Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft

If you think about it, what's shocking isn't the size of Microsoft or Apple, companies that are decades old, established titans of industry (even if they have stumbled in the past)—it's Google. In just over 10 years, Google's become arguably the most important company on the web, spreading to anything the internet touches with astonishing speed, almost like a virus: From the web and search to books, video, mobile phones, operating systems, and soon, your TV.
