Destructoid's friendly, neighborhood movie site Flixist is covering the Japan Cuts Film Festival in New York all this week (along with the New York Asian Film Festival all last week) and to kick off the events they've got an epic review of the film adaptation of the Ace Attorney game series. You may have seen the trailers and such previously, but it's possible they didn't prepare you for how good the film actually is. (more)

Preview: Phantasy Star Online 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1892 days, 2 hours, 42 minutes ago
Monday, July 16, 2012 8:31:39 AM GMT
Sega announced this week that Phantasy Star Online 2 is headed to the United States and Europe come 2013. This is great news for fans of the series, especially for those who thought that the spinoff sequels deviated too much from the formula that people fell in love with originally. Recently, I donned my pointy ears, grabbed my future laser lance, and snuck my way into the Japanese open beta to experience just how awesome a pure sequel to Phantasy Star Online is. (more)

SDCC: DmC producers: 30 fps can feel just as nice as 60

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1893 days, 3 hours, 22 minutes ago
Sunday, July 15, 2012 7:52:23 AM GMT
I've got no hate for series reboot DmC: Devil May Cry, and Jim seems to be on the same page, but it's understandable that long-time series fans have some concerns over the use of the Unreal Engine and its ties to a 30 frames per second rate for the game, given that past titles have run at twice the frame rate. Capcom Japan producer Motohide Eshiro and supervising director Hideaki Itsuno were happy to address some of the concerns in a chat with Destructoid yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con. (more)

Yakuza, Japan's mafia, has a long history with games: card games, Pachinko machines, and now social gaming. Some of Japan's current social games, including one about Yakuza, are funded by Japan's mafia, according to Tokyo Vice author and ex-Yomiuri Shinbun reporter Jake Adelstein. (more)

Persona 4 Arena: Atlus statement clarifies region-lock

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1900 days, 1 hour, 48 minutes ago
Sunday, July 08, 2012 9:25:33 AM GMT
Beyond this, Atlus wanted to clear the air on their policies as well as region-locking going forward. They call this an "isolated case" that was out of North American hands, and says that it all came down to having the game release in the two territories (Japan and U.S.) within two weeks of each other, at different price points, due to the difference in the dollar and yen. They say that region-locking was not put in place for control purposes. (more)

Nintendo cuts 3DS AC adapter price ahead of 3DS XL launch

I'm guessing that internet kids are still breathing hard after the near heart attack they had when they heard that Japan's 3DS LL would not come with an AC adapter. We're fine here in the U.S., but the rest of the world has to buy a power adapter separately. (more)

Project X Zone gets a release date, in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1910 days, 4 hours, 19 minutes ago

"In Japan". Isn't that the worst phrase ever to see on a video game website? Not only is it an indicator that a possible western release is far away, but it doesn't even guarantee one in the first place. Anyways, all of you lucky Japanese residents will be able to enjoy Project X Zone, the cross collaborative 3DS strategy RPG from Namco Bandai, SEGA, and Capcom, on October 11th. (more)

In an interview with Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun asked about Wii U's pricing, which would be a nice thing to know, especially when you consider that the system will be released in about six months. Iwata says that they're aiming to release their latest console at a "reasonable" price, whatever that means. (more)

D3 brings Earth Defense Force 2017 to Vita Sept 27

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1911 days, 3 hours, 23 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 7:50:41 AM GMT
We told you earlier this month that Japan would see the release of a PS Vita port of Xbox 360 title Earth Defense Force 2017 this Fall, and in that post we predicted that D3 would probably bring it our way a bit later. No word on that yet (what's the hold up?), but you can always import or download the digital version, and you shouldn't have much trouble with the language barrier with this type of game. (more)

Or is it titles? We heard at E3 2011 that the next Smach Bros. game would somehow involve both the 3DS and the Wii U, but we're still waiting on details as to what that means. (more)

Anarchy Reigns release expected in 2013 now

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1919 days, 4 hours, 44 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 6:29:45 AM GMT
Once again, we have a vague idea of when Platinum Games' brawling action title Anarchy Reigns will be arriving in North America and Europe. It's going to be another lengthy wait. Originally planned for release in Fall of 2011, the game was delayed to January 2012, then further pushed back for a worldwide release in July. By the end of this past May, the situation had changed again, with the Japanese release the only one confirmed for the July date while the North American and European releases returned t... (more)

Sony unveils Crystal White PlayStation Vita, limited digital diva edition

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1961 days, 3 hours, 59 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 08, 2012 7:14:52 AM GMT
Remember that line-up of colorful consoles we eyed back at TGS? One of eight of those mock-ups is about to become a reality, at least in Japan. On June 28th, color conscious gamers will be able to pick up a WiFi or 3G Crystal White PlayStation Vita for ¥24,980 and ¥29,980, respectively (that's about $312 and $375 if you're counting in greenbacks). If the absence of color is a bit too bland for you, a limited edition Hatsune Miku handheld will hit shelves two days later, commanding a ¥10,000 ($125) premiu... (more)

Honda test house features Smart Home System for controlling energy usage

Wednesday, May 02, 2012 6:10:13 AM GMT
The term "smart home" seems to turn up in tech circles every so often, only to fade into the background again without much sign of ultra-connected dwellings becoming a reality. Honda's at least putting one foot forward, with a just-unveiled test house in Saitama, Japan featuring a system for controlling and monitoring energy usage. The Honda Smart Home System (HSHS) consists of thin-film solar cell panels, a rechargeable home battery unit, gas and hot water supply systems and the Smart e Mix Manager (more)
