Konami's 3D arcade racer: Road Fighters

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2550 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes ago
Thursday, September 30, 2010 7:08:23 AM GMT
Konami has announced their next 3D racing arcade game, Road Fighters. It will come to the arcade in a cabinet that has a steering wheel and a seat with drop-down 3D glasses. You're free to switch between 2D and 3D with a button press, but what's the fun of playing this game if you're not going to go all the way. Spectators won't be left out of the action as the rear of the seat is also equipped with a second 3D lens set to they can watch on. (more)

Nintendo 3DS Release Dates in 2011, Around $300

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2550 days, 16 hours, 23 minutes ago
Thursday, September 30, 2010 7:06:15 AM GMT
While the Nintendo 3DS, the 3D-capable handheld, was pegged to be a holiday item, Nintendo officially announced that it'll instead be coming in the first quarter of 2011. At a conference in Japan earlier today, Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata announced that the 3DS will be available in the Japanese market on February 26 for 25,000 yen, which converts to just under $300 (more)

You don't say: Pokemon Black/White are a success in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2557 days, 16 hours, 6 minutes ago
Thursday, September 23, 2010 7:23:08 AM GMT
The number of pre-orders for Pokemon Black and White in Japan was pretty crazy, but they've got nothing on the amount of copies sold in the first week: 2.55 million. In fact, The Pokemon Company International called them the "fastest-selling DS games ever in Japan over the first week of sales." Just when you're starting to think the formula has gone unchanged for too long, they switch up the design in a few key areas and it pays off big time. (more)

Nintendo trademarks Super Mario anniversary logo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2571 days, 16 hours, 35 minutes ago
Thursday, September 09, 2010 6:54:13 AM GMT
The 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros' NES debut is only a week away. To celebrate, Nintendo of Japan has trademarked a new ... logo. Siliconera speculates that the logo will be appended to the upcoming Japanese re-release of Mario All-Stars (known as Super Mario Collection). But, why go through the effort of trademarking a logo for a single product? Presumably, the company will want to use this logo on all Mario games in the coming year. (more)

Impressions: Shogun 2: Total War

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2577 days, 17 hours, 4 minutes ago
Friday, September 03, 2010 6:25:07 AM GMT
Recently Sega invited me over to its San Francisco offices to take a peek at the latest game in the Total War series: Shogun 2. As a return to the original Total War game Shogun: Total War, Shogun 2 is the latest in the real time/turn-based fusion strategy game. Sega and developer The Creative Assembly were kind enough to show me the real time battle elements of the game, with the turn-based overworld stuff saved for something I have planned next week. Fans of the franchise will certainly want to pay at... (more)

Wait, what? Persona 3 Social coming to mobile phones

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2593 days, 13 hours, 54 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 18, 2010 9:34:56 AM GMT
With three versions of Persona 3 (the original, the FES expansion, and the PSP remake) already out in the wild, it's clear that Atlus isn't above revisiting popular territory. That's been a good thing so far, as each iteration of Persona 3 so far has been superb (30/30 for score, people!), but a line has to be drawn somewhere, right? (more)

Hands-on: MindJack

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2597 days, 14 hours, 27 minutes ago
Saturday, August 14, 2010 9:01:19 AM GMT
The world of MindJack is an interesting one. It's the year 2031, and people have the technology, through the power of special cybernetic devices, to control daily objects with just a thought. However, it's not so simple as that, as these devices also enable players to shift between the minds of other AI controlled players. When a dastardly power hungry military organization tries to take over, what are the good agents of the world to do? Wildly jump between the minds of nearby NPC and use them to lay was... (more)

Game SERIES Debate to the Death! Persona series

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2607 days, 14 hours, 14 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 04, 2010 9:15:15 AM GMT
Last week was a nostalgia nightmare for many readers, as we were tasked with the challenge of picking which EarthBound (Mother) game was our favorite out of the series. Some were completely on board with the newer Mother 3, while some stood by the EarthBound game they grew up with, but most were torn over the choices and forced to weigh the pros and cons before making a careful decision. That's always the sign of a good debate! In the end, after much fist-shaking at Nintendo, here were the results: (more)

Play Metal Gear Arcade for three days ... in Japan

Surely there are those within the Joystiq Biomass with the ability, locality or sheer resourcefulness to be in Japan from July 30 through August 1 to play test Metal Gear Arcade. This post is for you. Konami is staging location tests of the 3D, head-tracking, coin-operated Metal Gear Online adaptation at two gaming centers for those days only: Adores Shibuya (in, you guessed it, Shibuya) and Round One in Kahoku, Ishikawa Prefecture, about four hours west of Tokyo by train. Arc System Works has finally revealed a launch date for the PC port of the first entry in its budding new fighting series, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Japanese gaming site 4Gamer reports Aksys Games is priming the Games For Windows Live version of the frenetic fighter for an August 26 PC release in Japan, for a suggested retail price of ¥5,040 ($58). Japan special edition No More Heroes 2 comes with stuff

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2627 days, 14 hours, 29 minutes ago

He who laughs last, laughs best. That's what I always told myself whenever the Japanese would get a game months or years before I would get the opportunity to play it. I would hope, often against fate, that the version I got would have a special edition full of nifty stuff the Japanese didn't get and then I could feel better about the wait. (more)

Inazuma Eleven coming to Wii

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2642 days, 23 hours, 13 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 12:15:51 AM GMT
The longest line I've ever seen to play a specific game (not counting the E3 2006 line to play the Wii) was at Tokyo Game Show a few years back, at Level-5's booth. Everyone wanted to play soccer game Inazuma Eleven for the DS. Since those days the series has been going strong. And soccer is big right now, so why not announce a sequel for the Wii? (more)

Japanese hardware sales, June 14 - June 20: Rise of the Touchables edition

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2644 days, 15 hours, 50 minutes ago

As you text-skippers have already noticed, there's been a pretty significant shake-up in this week's Japanese hardware sales chart, with all three incarnations of the Nintendo DS getting substantial sales boosts. There's been a lot of speculation as to how these increases came about -- most seem to think it has something to do with Japan's recent discounting of all three handhelds, as well as the introduction of new colors for the current king supreme, the DSi LL. Fist of the North Star getting Japanese voice option

Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:54:00 AM GMT
When I previewed Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage at E3, I noted that the game used Japanese voiceovers with English subtitles. I aimed to find out if Japanese voices would be an option in the North American release of the game, but it seems the answer is already with us. Japanophiles will be thrilled to note that the option will indeed be available! (more)

Japan juiced for Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2660 days, 14 hours, 47 minutes ago

Ghost Trick is being promoted by Japan's "Juicer Bar" franchise with a themed juice drink, made of blackcurrant, blueberries, and a "mystery flavor." In keeping with the game, we're guessing it's arsenic -- you have to go back in time and possess the juice machine to stop your drink from being made. (more)

CESA calculates gaming industry losses due to portable piracy

Japan's Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association recently conducted a study of the the world's 114 most popular sites for illegal game downloads in order to get a rough estimate on how much the industry has lost due to software piracy. The results aren't pretty: According to Andriasang's report on the group's calculations, piracy on the DS and PSP alone between 2004 and 2009 cost the worldwide games industry roughly 3.816 trillion yen, or around $41.7 billion. Join us in a "holy crap," won't you? Hol... (more)

PS3 gets 3D updates on June 10th in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2670 days, 15 hours, 29 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 02, 2010 7:59:29 AM GMT
If you've been dying to play 3D-enabled PS3 games, know that an update to add this functionality is probably coming soon. For Japan, we know that the update will come on June 10th, and seeing as how they usually get feature updates at about the same time we do, I think it's safe to assume we'll see 3D in June. I mean, E3 is in two weeks. (more)
