Catch up on Xenoblade with new trailer

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 2 hours, 28 minutes ago

In case you haven't been following Monolith Soft's Wii RPG Xenoblade, the strikingly comprehensive NIntendo Channel trailer after the break should help get you up to speed before E3, during which we suspect the game will appear again. Despite the language barrier, you'll be able to see the setting (a world built on the bodies of two dead giants), the battle system (action-RPG style with AI partners and player-controlled special moves called "Arts"), and a bit about equipment (that can be seen on charact... See the Super Mario Galaxy 2 orchestra live (on video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 2 hours, 29 minutes ago
Friday, May 28, 2010 8:40:12 AM GMT
For Super Mario Galaxy 2's soundtrack, Nintendo went all-out, recording the main theme with a 70-person orchestra. Footage of the assembled musicians playing the sweeping opening music has been released via the Japanese Nintendo Channel (watch it after the break), allowing us to see just how much more epic a piece of music is when you see it played by a room full of people. If you're wondering why Shigeru Miyamoto looks so bored, it's because there was no room in the orchestra for his banjo. (more)

Wild Arms dev working on PS3/PSP game with worldwide appeal

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 3 hours, 36 minutes ago

Media Vision, best known for the Wild Arms RPG series, is working on a new project for PlayStation 3 and PSP. New job listings suggest that the project is quite early in production, and is expected to be "a massive project that will span a long term." While the listing describes the Wild Arms series as being "representative of Japan," this new title for Sony platforms will be one that "appeals to users not just in Japan, but around the world as well." Tokyo Game Show 2010's visual is an ugly idol

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes ago
Thursday, May 27, 2010 7:29:29 AM GMT
Last year we loved and laughed at Tokyo Game Show's slogan: "Game, it's so energetic!" But this year? This year beats them all. Rather than a silly slogan, they've gone with an even more bold visual concept that features an ugly idol with too many mechanical limbs (one seemingly coming from the crotch area!) holding various controllers, one of which has sprouted from her right leg. The slogan is something like "Game is going into a new chapter." (more)

Marvelous focuses on PSP development in fiscal 2011

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2674 days, 4 hours ago
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 7:09:27 AM GMT
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise, given the company's recent executive pay cuts and low sales figures, that Marvelous Entertainment is looking to cut costs in fiscal 2011 by reducing its lineup of games slightly. Siliconera points out a slide from the company's latest earnings report (Japanese PDF downloadable at the bottom of the window) that shows only ten releases for the period between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. That's down two from the previous year. The biggest move comes from the DS... (more)

Politicians. Actors. Singers, too. What do they have in common with Xbox Japan mascot Sanrokumaru? They have all thrown out the first pitch at baseball games. Sanrokumaru stars in a new series of TV ads in which he and the rest of the "Xbox Mission Department" attempts to secure titles like the new Virtual-On for the Xbox 360. (more)

There's been no sign of Q Entertainment's localized Japanese version of Rock Band since its announcement in 2008. In fact, the title is unlikely to happen at all, according to Harmonix's John Drake, who told RockBandAide that fans shouldn't expect a standalone Japanese edition of the game. (more)

Know How To Double Xbox 360 Sales In Japan?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2690 days, 4 hours, 44 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 6:25:03 AM GMT
Japan isn't only The Land of the Rising Sun. It's also The Land of Xbox 360 Indifference. There must be a way to double weekly consoles sales. Turns out, there is. Well, at least once. In last week's hardware sales tally, the Xbox 360 sold 2,214 units in Japan. By comparison, there were 28,758 PSPs sold and 25,629 PS3s sold. Only the PSPgo at 1,544 units sold and the PS2 at 1,490 units lost to the Xbox 360. (more)

Nier sold far more than anything else in Japan last week

Japan may be as confused by Square Enix's Nier as we are -- but it would appear that PS3 owners are answering their questions about the action RPG title firsthand, by purchasing it. The PS3 version, Nier Replicant, is the best-selling title for the week of April 19.25, with 60,000 units sold, according to Gpara's early estimate of Media Create sales rankings. (more)

Sony teases VAIO Ultra Mobile, Clippy chuffed

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2702 days, 2 hours, 15 minutes ago

Interesting. Sony's teasing a new VAIO "Ultra Mobile" in Japan. No idea what this could be: refreshed VAIO X lappie, VAIO P netbook, or a new take on its venerable VAIO UX micro PC? With Intel's Moorestown just around the corner we're leaning towards the latter, hoping for it anyway -- Sony doesn't tease just any old product without good reason. Oh, wait. (more)

No More Heroes remakes outsold the original by a little

We're not going to say that No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise is a hit, but those of us in constant fear of Marvelous running out of money can breathe a sigh of relief, as the remake has brought a little cash in (more considering that the game is a port and therefore probably less expensive to produce). In fact, both versions managed to make it into the Media Create top ten, with the PS3 version's 16,000 copies securing a #7 position and the Xbox 360 version's 15,000 copies at #8. Both of these actually o... (more)

Microsoft confirms Bayonetta/Forza 3 bundle for Japan

Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:38:04 PM GMT
Microsoft is putting on its best marketing face to try and sell some Xbox 360s in Japan, hence a new Xbox 360 Elite bundle -- last week's rumored bundle. The new pack includes a copy of Forza 3 and Bayonetta on top of all the usual trimmings that come with an Xbox 360 Elite -- all for a cool ¥29,800 ($319.48). It's one of the more unique software bundles we've seen, to tell the truth, but a nice way to entice Japanese gamers. Each title comes from an opposite side of the spectrum: Forza 3 is a diehard ra... (more)

Gundam Cafe Opens In Akihabara

There's no place more fitting for an official Gundam Cafe than in Tokyo's Akihabara district. Sadly Japanese maids don't draw hearts in syrup over your pancakes or put "love spells" on you like at Maid Cafes...but there are Gundam biscuits! Akihabara News visited the cafe before its grand opening to the public this Saturday, and has a full collection of photos over on their site. I do not recommend this 29-year old Japanese man look at the site though. It'd bring back too many memories (more)

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker losing a scene in Japan

How is Twitter like Metal Gear Solid's codec system? Two ways: you see a picture of the person speaking next to every statement, and Hideo Kojima writes a lot for both. Andriasang pointed out a Tweet from the game designer, revealing that cuts had to be made to the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to keep the game at a CERO (Japan's equivalent to the ESRB) "C" rating. Sony releasing PSP Minis-esque collection in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2712 days, 15 hours, 58 minutes ago

Sony has announced an initiative to bring inexpensive, smaller PSP gaming experiences to the Japanese PlayStation Store. You're probably thinking, "wow, that sounds a lot like the PSP Minis that are currently available in the U.S. and Europe!" While you're not too far off, we feel it pertinent to note that these games will be infinitely more awesome -- if their intoxicatingly brilliant titles are any indication. (more)

Nintendo's handheld managed to move a total of 36,459 units across its three SKUs compared to the PS3's 28,973 (via GamesIndustry.biz). In a week where hardware sales were generally down, the PSP-3000 managed to outperform the individual Nintendo DS SKUs with a total of 29,766 units sold.
