A new patent suggests Sony is considering -- or considered at one time -- its own take on a 3D depth-sensing camera. The patent in question was filed by Dr. Richard Marks, the inventor of the PS Eye and PlayStation Move, back in October. (more)

Kinect hacks previously brought gesture and voice control to Boxee and XBMC, and now that the Kinect for Windows hardware has been released we've got a solution for Windows Media Center. The aptly named Kinect for Media Center brings all the normal playback controls (for WMC and add-ins like Netflix) to your fingertips and lips, at the cost of $6.99. (more)

Mass Effect 3 'Mission Command' Facebook app offers in-game goodies

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1996 days, 32 minutes ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:08:36 AM GMT
Microsoft has launched a Facebook app called Mass Effect 3 Mission Command, that both serves as promotion for the upcoming Mass Effect 3, and an opportunity to get some in-game items. You "log in" to Mission Command (which grants EA access to your Facebook account and email), and then you have to fulfill missions like recruiting your friends, posting pickup lines for Liara, downloading the demo, or sharing movies of you pretending to be in the game. Kinect: Star Wars trailer is cute in an awkward, bumbling kind of way

Imagine Obi Wan Kenobi not as Jedi master, but a guy working the cash register down at the Gas 'n Gulp. Rather than wielding an elegant weapon for a more civilized age and being a princess's only hope, he's closer to the idiot in the Kinect: Star Wars trailer above. (more)

Microsoft reportedly working on Kinect-enabled laptops

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2001 days, 23 hours, 24 minutes ago
Saturday, January 28, 2012 11:15:49 AM GMT
It remains to be seen when or if they'll turn into actual products, but The Daily reports that Microsoft is at least working on getting its Kinect technology shoved into laptops. While details are light, the iPad-based publication says that it's seen a pair of prototypes that "appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8," but which have had their webcams replaced with an array of sensors that run along the top of the screen (a set of LEDs are said to be at the bottom). Kinect-powered theme park opens in South Korea

While South Korea's cousins to the north are busying themselves with their new glorious leader, the folks in the south's Ilsan districts of Gyeonggi-do are being entranced by American technology. An entire theme park has been created using Microsoft's Kinect tech combined with RFID wristbands that allow attendees to create avatar representations of themselves and move through the park while interacting with its various "attractions." Five games we could really Kinect with

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2013 days, 1 hour, 1 minute ago
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 9:39:20 AM GMT
Kinect, as it stands right now, is a "pretty cool" thing. As a supplement to the general operation of an Xbox 360, it's hard for me to imagine living without it now that it's in my home. As an accessory designed for the purpose of playing games, it meets with significantly less success. While there are a few stand-out titles such as Dance Central, Kinect has failed thus far to move beyond a novelty because there simply isn't enough high-quality software demonstrating how great it could be. Microsoft's Xbox 360 has had quite a year. According to a 2011 roundup video released by the company just ahead of its final CES keynote (prepare for Ballmer-age), the Xbox 360 now sits at a total of 66 million units sold worldwide. In case you're keeping track, that means nearly 10 million more were sold over the holiday season since the last check-in with Microsoft in late October. (more)

Minecraft to begin (and possibly never end) with a beta on XBLA

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2175 days, 13 hours, 56 minutes ago
Sunday, August 07, 2011 8:43:41 PM GMT
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson likes to take things slow -- crawl before you walk, beta for two years and gain mainstream popularity and 3 million users before you release the actual game, that sort of slow. It seems Minecraft's release on XBLA won't be any different, as it will begin with a beta, much like its PC papi. Notch said he wants to discern which aspects of the game are fun on console before its release, but he thinks the Kinect features will be an interesting part of Minecraft's port... (more)

Nyko Zoom potentially delayed one month

Look honey, we know you're anxious to start waving your arms around, but your Kinect might need a little more time to get over its fear of intimacy. We know you were hoping the Nyko Zoom, the close-encounters enabling Kinect lens cover, would bridge the gap between you two. We know you've been looking looking forward to that August 13 release date with bated breath, but it looks like you're going to have to wait a little longer. (more)

Rise of Nightmares screens for the children

Rise of Nightmare is a decidedly M-rated game, there's no question about that. The first-person Kinect-exclusive action title has you waving your arms around to slaughter zombies and ghouls in a variety of obscene ways -- with a chainsaw, with a machete, with a drill. Basically, if it's sharp or can do damage, you'll probably get a chance to take it upside something's head. (more)

SDCC: Leedmees, a body puzzle game for Kinect

With games for Microsoft's Kinect, you are the controller, but there's not much out there where your body is the solution to a puzzle. Well, I should say that your body position is the solution to a puzzle. You'll flail and pose to save little creatures and guide them to their planet in Leedmees, a new Kinect puzzle title from Konami. (more)

Don't be shy now: which of you doesn't love raiding your mother's closet and trying on her paisley dresses and velour tracksuits? That's more or less the idea behind Virtual Dressing Room, a Kinect hack that taps into the clandestine thrill of sneaking into other people's boudoirs. Unlike some other shopping hacks we've seen, the app goes beyond just pilling on 2D pieces, but uses 3D models so that the items mold to your limbs, with the shadows and creases in the virtual fabric changing as you preen for ... John Carmack Gives Thumbs Up for Wii U

In a recent interview with IndustryGamers, id Software technical director John Carmack seemingly gave a thumbs up for the Nintendo Wii U console. In fact, he said it should be a "slam dunk" in bringing the id Tech 5 engine to the upcoming platform. But don't get your hopes up just yet – Wii U support isn't exactly an official deal until Carmack gets his hands on an actual unit. (more)
