Kinect hacks, performance art edition: pin boards, puppets and RoboThespians

posted by adminadmin 2305 days, 6 hours, 34 minutes ago
Sunday, March 06, 2011 10:38:56 AM GMT
Tired of Kinect hacks yet? We hope not, as the frequency and ingenuity of them only seems to be increasing with each passing week. The three in this latest group all fall more or less under the banner of performance art, and include two hacks that let you control two very different avatars -- a virtual puppet in the "We Be Monsters" project and the very real "RoboThespian" -- as well one that creates a virtual pin board that's perfect for your next rave. If the RoboThespian looks a little familiar, it's ... (more)

PlayStation Move strategy to focus on 'more core titles,' says Sony's Koller

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2355 days, 8 hours, 7 minutes ago
Saturday, January 15, 2011 9:05:30 AM GMT
John Koller, director of hardware marketing for PlayStation, acknowledged to the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft's 8 million shipped Kinect units amount to a "very impressive" figure, though he assured that his company is still "happy where we are in the market" with Move. As of the end of November, Sony had shipped 4.1 million units of its motion controller and believes it has an edge over Microsoft in the race to earn the hard-won affections of the "hardcore" consumer. That's you, right? (more)

Xbox's David Dennis on December NPDs, 'best month ever for Xbox 360 hardware sales'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2356 days, 6 hours, 58 minutes ago
Friday, January 14, 2011 10:14:29 AM GMT
Xbox 360 had a good year. It could've been exclusive hits like Halo Reach, which landed in the No. 3 spot on the top selling games of 2010, according to NPD. Or it could've been the Xbox 360 S console refresh which, since its unveiling at E3 last June, has remained on top of the monthly home console sales numbers for an impressive six months straight. Or maybe it was the Kinect, which shipped a whopping eight million units by the end of the year, and sold well over its five million unit goal. (more)

Microsoft 'ran out' of Xbox 360s this holiday season

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2356 days, 7 hours, 18 minutes ago
Friday, January 14, 2011 9:54:10 AM GMT
Microsoft is pretty good at the ol' spin game. America's NPD data comes out tomorrow, and Microsoft does not believe that it beat out the competition this Holiday season, even with Kinect backing it up. However, Microsoft has turned this into a positive -- suggesting it will only lose because it sold too many consoles! (more)

With all the hacks that have emerged in the short time it's been available to the public, Kinect is really starting to shine. It seems we learn a new use for the peripheral every single day. However, one thing it's missing is a shiny, shiny, needlessly expensive and properly ugly Swarovski crystal exterior. (more)

Kinect sells 26,000 in Japanese launch weekend

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2402 days, 8 hours, 4 minutes ago

Kinect had what most people would call a successful launch, moving over one million units worldwide during its first week on store shelves; however, the device wasn't met with quite as warm a reception in Japan. According to Media Create, Microsoft's new all-seeing eye had a "quiet start" in the region, moving just 26,000 units during its launch weekend of November 20 -- that includes both standalone and 360-bundled Kinects. Microsoft just recently announced the sale of over 1,000,000 Kinect sensors the device has only been available for about two weeks. Considering this success, there are probably quite a few people out there considering buying Kinect in the near future. To those people, Microsoft is saying get a move on. (more)

Xbox Kinect Already Hacked to Run on Windows

Many hardcore gaming fans think Kinect is just a little bit too casual to bother with, but you have to admit, the motion-sensing peripheral has enormous potential. It's for this reason that open-source hardware developer Adafruit last week offered up a $2,000 bounty for the first person to build an open-source driver for Kinect. (more)
