New Xbox Dashboard adds updated piracy measures

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2451 days, 21 hours, 56 minutes ago

The latest Xbox 360 Dashboard update didn't just make the Avatars taller and give you the ability to navigate its menus with your mind -- it also made the illicit enterprise of pirates just a little bit more difficult. According to Digital Foundry, the hardware now institutes a series of checks, which hackers refer to as "AP 2.5," that work in conjunction with "security sectors" embedded in the disc. (more)

Fighters Uncaged unreview: It's unbelievably ungood

One time, I was pushing a TV around so I could watch He-Man while I ate my Cap'n Crunch in the dining room. I was four years old. I accidentally pushed the TV over, bringing it smashing down on my finger. I had to get eight stitches and I eventually lost the fingernail. (more)

Kinect vs. our living rooms: A survey

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2451 days, 22 hours, 7 minutes ago
Friday, November 05, 2010 8:34:13 AM GMT
Some of us at Joystiq have had Kinect units in our living rooms for a week or so now and, as you read in our review, Kinect can be especially sensitive about your interior decorating. Couch to close to the television? Just move it, the sensor advises. Massive coffee table right where you should be standing? Just slide it out of the way, it suggests. For some of us, this ad-hoc redecorating process is relatively painless (more)

And just like that, all three of the major game consoles now have some semblance of motion controls. Unlike the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Move, however, Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360 opts to get rid of buttons altogether, relying on body gestures and voice commands (more)

Details on why Microsoft dropped a Kinect processor

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2487 days, 23 hours, 31 minutes ago
Thursday, September 30, 2010 7:10:09 AM GMT
The Kinect's innards used to contain a standalone processor. In January they said they ditched it and now we have a bit more information on why. Before the removal of the processor, the Kinect used it for number crunching. Now, with the removal, the Xbox 360's processing does all the work. Kinect's main man at Microsoft, Kudo Tsunoda, explains: "We didn't know how much processing Kinect was going to take at the start of development," Tsunoda told the new Xbox World 360. (more)

GC 10: Kinect Dashboard hands-on and XBL expansion

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2528 days, 22 hours, 35 minutes ago

We had a look at a rough version of the Kinect Dashboard today. Actually, they started the session by announcing that Xbox Live would be available in 9 new markets: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Chile, Colombia, South Africa and Greece. So if you live in any of those countries, yay for you. I asked if they were planning to expand into China, but only got the standard PR talk as a result. So, no China or funny comments. Boo for us. VIDEO: Fighting Invisible Baddies on Xbox Kinect

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2528 days, 22 hours, 43 minutes ago

Fighters Uncaged is an exclusive title for Microsoft Kinect and will be available for purchase in November of this year, presumably around the same time as Kinect hits shelves. Ubisoft says players will be able to execute more than 70 different martial arts-inspired moves in just over 20 different settings, such as rooftops, dark alleys and old churches. The game will feature unlockable new skills and a jump-in option that allows you to take down opponents with the help of your friends. (more)

Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 launching on November 10 in Europe

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2531 days, 22 hours, 39 minutes ago
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 8:02:25 AM GMT
While Microsoft's new controller-free Kinect for Xbox 360 will be hitting US shores on November 4th, we've just learned that it'll officially land in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa on November 10th. Sure, that's a bit of a wait, but take heart in knowing that Microsoft's targeting an October launch of its Xbox Live lovin' Windows Phone 7 handsets in Europe compared to a November release in the US. Otherwise, we're looking at the same 15 exclusive Kinect game titles already announced at E3. (more)

250GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle tipped on 4GB packaging

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2541 days, 22 hours, 7 minutes ago
Saturday, August 07, 2010 8:33:59 AM GMT
Well, well -- what have we here? We already knew that Microsoft was planning to ship a 4GB Xbox 360 bundle that included Kinect, and now it seems as if the Big M will also package its forthcoming motion sensor with the 250GB 'box. Based on the packaging of a 4GB bundle over in Australia, it definitely looks as if consumers will have a more capacious option if buying an Xbox 360 for the first time with Kinect, but we're all waiting with bated breath to hear the official confirmation (or denial, but mostl... Lionhead boss and Microsoft Game Studios Europe director Peter Molyneux has revealed on the Engadget Show that Fable 3 will not ship with any Kinect functionality, despite past confirmations to the contrary. Joystiq spoke with Molyneux following his appearance on the show and learned that some form of Kinect content may be available post-launch, and that whatever was initially planned to be built into the game just wasn't up to snuff. Play Kinect at Macy's because Macy's is all about gaming

While interest in both Kinect and Move may not be the greatest in the world according to people who keep track of these things that doesn't mean that Microsoft is shoving Kinect into everyone's face as much as they possibly can in every possible way. Their next promotion aimed at grabbing the casual market five years after Nintendo is letting customers at Macy's play Kinect. (more)

Microsoft: Oh sorry, Project Milo ISN'T just a tech demo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2579 days, 11 hours, 32 minutes ago

Contrary to what Aaron Greenberg has said, Lionhead has refuted the claim that Milo was a mere tech demo and won't be available for public consumption. On the contrary, there is currently a team of fifty people still working on the Milo & Kate project, and Aaron Greenberg himself backtracked on his "not coming to market" claims earlier today. (more)

Milo demo from last year not planned as a game

Remember that really creepy demo of Kinect when it was first unveiled as Project Natal last year? I'm talking about the one with the kid who fished and made everyone watching him feel vaguely uncomfortable. At the time, we were under the impression that this was going to someday be a retail product. Not so, according to Aaron Greenberg. Australian TV program Good Game asked the Xbox boss about the Milo demo, where he stated that the demo still existed and had been refined but there were no plans to make... (more)

Purchase intent for Move and Kinect not so high

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2581 days, 22 hours, 46 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:55:23 AM GMT
I think it is safe to say that we are all aware of this Kinect thing and that PlayStation Move stuff, but who is actually going to buy this stuff? According to the EEDAR not many people. According to their numbers the purchase intent for Move and Kinect "ranked relatively low" on its charts. The two motion control gaming peripherals failed to break the firm's top 20 despite their "awareness among the core gaming community." (more)

Kinect Tech Coming to HTPCs in 2011

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2584 days, 23 hours, 39 minutes ago

Want the Kinect motion-sensing control but you're just not a fan of the Xbox 360? Here's a bit of good news: the company behind the technology used in Microsoft's upcoming peripheral--PrimeSense--has already signed deals to provide its technology inside Home Theater PCs slated to hit the market by the end of the year. But don't expect the actual Kinect device and its library of games ported to the PC--this will be an all-new, pre-installed system. (more)

What the PS3 Needs to Compete with Kinect

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2594 days, 22 hours, 33 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 8:07:50 AM GMT
Project Natal is officially called Kinect, but we don’t really know more than we did before, with the exception of the launch title lineup. What we do know, however, that Microsoft is serious about Kinect (as strange as this thing sounds) and the Xbox 360 is moving closer to general entertainment than ever before. Sony should take the challenge seriously. The PS3 platform needs some adjustment and upgrades. (more)

Kinect, the new Xbox 360, and ESPN: highlights from Microsoft at E3 2010

My, what big showing you have there, Microsoft. We're still recovering from today and yesterday's big Xbox 360 Kinect unveiling party, but let's take a brief trip down short-term memory lane. First, Project Natal became Kinect, unveiled a handful of interesting / guaranteed-to-embarrass uses, and solidified its November release date. Then ESPN3 made an impressive debut on Xbox Live. Finally, the piece de resistance, a slimmed down Xbox 360 250GB that came (almost) out of nowhere and hits retail as soon a... (more)
