Mad Catz ships the Primer wireless headset for Xbox

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2083 days, 13 hours, 31 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 10:06:25 AM GMT
Mad Catz has announced that it has shipped the Primer wireless headset. Sold under the Tritton brand, the stereo headset is notable in that it is the first officially licensed wireless headset for the Xbox 360. Nearly identical in appearance to Tritton's Detonator headset -- minus the cables, plus a "base station" -- the Primer utilizes 5.8GHz wireless tech, which purportedly cuts down on interference from appliances, phones and the like. Microsoft moves 18 million Kinect sensors, leaves behind a lot of lonely couch cushions

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2083 days, 13 hours, 45 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 9:52:30 AM GMT
Here's a fun little tidbit from tonight's Seacrest-heavy Microsoft Keynote: turns out that Redmond has moved 18 million Kinect sensors in just over a year, according to the Steve Ballmer's numbers. The news came amidst a few announcements that should help the company push even more of the gesture-based peripherals out the door -- Kinect for Windows, anyone? Of course, this being the company's last CES keynote for the foreseeable future, it'll have to find another convention hall full of people to brag to... (more)

Windows 8 Will Be Less Demanding of Update Restarts

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2133 days, 15 hours, 33 minutes ago

While it's nice that Windows 7 is so vigilant in keeping the computing world healthy with updates, power users prefer to handle it on their own. According to Microsoft's statistics, nearly 90 percent of Windows 7 users allow updates to install and restart the system automatically. 2.38 percent want to be notified before install; 3.44 percent want to be notified before download; and 4.88 percent have update checking disabled. Saints Row: The Third and doughnuts for dinner

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2165 days, 19 hours, 3 minutes ago

Saints Row: The Third is like a doughnut, and I'm trying to decide if that's a good thing. I mean, everybody loves doughnuts -- I know I do. They're fluffy, sometimes sticky and mostly made of sugar and butter, two of the best-tasting foods around. And a proper doughnut, maybe with a morning coffee or during a meeting break, can really hit the spot, giving you that extra burst of energy that you need. (more)

Do people on the streets gasp in disgust and pull their children away from your positively delighted strut? Then it's about time you got your Rage on -- beginning today, people who pre-ordered Rage on Steam can begin pre-loading it in preparation for its Tuesday launch. Ecosystems take years to build and depend on other companies. Really, who has the time these days? Plus, they kick in only if a product reaches critical mass. Microsoft and SanDisk demonstrated the risk a few years back with their digital media players in seeding the market with third-party cases and docks using their own proprietary and now abandoned connectors. Over the past year, though, we've seen a number of tech companies take a new approach to mobile product development -- the corporate showcase -... (more)

Witcher 2 DLC free on PC, not on Xbox (for obvious reasons)

The Witcher 2 has been very successful for CD Projekt -- and it's most certainly been deserved -- so when it came time to figure out the DLC strategy, the company didn't want to charge players on the PC. As for the Xbox 360, well ... that's not up to CD Projekt. (more)

I'm not quite sure how it happened, but PC gaming seems to have gotten a bad rap over the last several years. It isn't from journalists like me, and it's certainly not coming from sites like Tom's Hardware; but at some point "they" decided that the PC should play second fiddle to the Xbox and PlayStation, instead of the other way around...or at the very least, seeing every player in the gaming space as equal. The sound and fury of BF3's Operation Guillotine (with first 360 footage)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2198 days, 14 hours, 8 minutes ago

The thing that never quite comes across in all of the footage EA and DICE have released is how likely Battlefield 3 is to get you kicked out of your apartment. Take this video, for example. It looks great. We're seeing the Frostbite 2 engine at night, for a change, and that light mortar? Awesome. And there are plenty of explosions in there, and gunshots, and yeah, they seem loud. But the videos just don't cover it. (more)

Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds

Tokyo Game Show 2011 is officially on, as today's keynote -- delivered by Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada -- kicked things off. But despite Mr. Wada's position at the JRPG giant, he's here speaking as the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Software Association, which means he had some pretty high level content to get through in his speech. To be extra clear, his keynote is named, "The Nature of the Industry Revolution of Games," so, pretty high level stuff. (more)

Windows 8 Even More Resource Efficient Than Windows 7

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2200 days, 19 hours, 53 minutes ago

Usually a new version of Windows demands higher system requirements than the one before it. This wasn't the case with Windows 7, and it looks like it also won't be the case for Windows 8. Microsoft yesterday demonstrated on stage at the Build event Windows 8 running on a three-year-old Lenovo S10 netbook, which packed an early model of the Intel Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM. Not only did it run Windows 8, but it ran it better than it could Windows 7. (more)

And when you're in a car, you could do a lot worse than a Porsche 911 Carrera S, which you can see in action in the video above. (more)
