Xbox 360 Update Preview discs are in the mail

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2416 days, 5 hours, 39 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 7:11:57 AM GMT
If you signed up the Xbox 360 preview program it's time to start camping out by your mailbox and pestering your delivery person -- the update discs are shipping. A few lucky gamers now have their sneak peak at the next Xbox Live update and free copy of Halo: Reach in hand, and one was kind enough to send us the shot above to prove it. The disc bears a serious warning though: do not try and install it on a non-preview approved system. (more)

Windows 8 app store revealed in leaked screenshots, ready for beta testing?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2416 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 7:10:44 AM GMT
Over the last few months, Chinese site cnBeta's been busy dishing out alleged screenshots of Windows 8 at its infancy, though few have caught our attention until this new batch came along. Assuming this isn't the work of some cruel joke, it appears that Microsoft's next flagship OS will be shipped with its very own built-in app store, which is simply dubbed Windows App Store at this stage (and now we see why Redmond keeps fighting the good fight over the "App Store" trademark). As with previous Windows m... (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2417 days, 2 hours, 24 minutes ago
Monday, April 11, 2011 10:27:09 AM GMT
The gaming industry is, with astonishing regularity, a total circus sideshow of inexplicable oddities -- but we're confident that nothing has approached the levels of bizarritude contained within this here post. According to IGN, Child of Eden creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi announced at the Kapow! Comic Con that developer Q Entertainment has whipped up a unique peripheral for the Kinect shooter: A corset which holds four 360 controllers at one time, all of which individually vibrate to the beat of Eden's music. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition drives to PSN, XBLA this October | Joystiq

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2422 days, 4 hours, 36 minutes ago

EA Sports is working on a follow-up to last year's reboot of NBA Jam, but this one's going download-only. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is set to take the court in October for both PS3 and Xbox Live (no Wii release announced) and will arrive via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, respectively. It's worth noting that last year's game was a full $50 retail release, but a stripped-down version was originally planned as a downloadable title free to those who purchased new copies of the ill-fated NBA Elite 11. Rockstar's Dan Houser on transmedia and building L.A. Noire

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2422 days, 4 hours, 41 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 06, 2011 8:09:57 AM GMT
The Hollywood Reported chatted with Rockstar's Dan Houser at the Tribeca Film Festival (where L.A. Noire is being shown off as an "interactive screening") and he said that, despite all of the attempts at solid transmedia properties recently, "no one has done it very successfully yet." The issue, in his opinion, is that companies are all too often going for money rather than what's right for the medium. "Too often, however," he said, "the aim appears to be to cash-in on the success of a particular game, b... (more)

Forza 4 pitch video pulled by Microsoft

Monday, April 04, 2011 7:32:00 AM GMT
If you must suffer an unforeseen failure in confidentiality on any day of the year, what better day than April 1st? It's the one time when the internet can muster some skepticism, even while presented with purportedly leaked footage of a high-profile sequel. Doubt over the authenticity of an "internal" pitch video of Forza Motorsport 4 might have obscured the news, had Microsoft not pulled it from Youtube. (more)

IE9 is Most Energy Efficient Browser, So Says MS

We all know the benefits of having an energy efficient system. Lower energy requirements mean bills, a smaller carbon footprint, and the immediate benefit of longer battery life. While the first concern of power management is to have energy efficient hardware, there's always the question of what software does with the hardware. Microsoft posted a blog article on its MSDN highlighting how much it feels that Internet Explorer 9 is the winner when it comes to keeping power draw to a minimum. (more)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 'Reverie' DLC released 'in error' on PSN

David Cox, producer on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, has been all over Twitter recently, responding to complaints about the DLC delay. When he was asked by one disgruntled European gamer wondering why the Xbox 360 delay was holding up the Reverie DLC on PS3 in his region, Cox revealed that the initial DLC launch on PSN was "put up there in error." In other words, Reverie wasn't meant to be released on PS3 in North America (whoops!). (more)
