How Xbox Live Achievements work

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2536 days, 18 hours, 16 minutes ago
Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:16:20 AM GMT
This post is for eggheads only -- we won't be talking about how to get Xbox Live achievements, or how the system of earning Gamerscore actually works. Nope, the latest Xbox Engineering blog post gets down and dirty with the actual software and hardware behind the Xbox Live Achievements system, and not only how your Xbox actually learns from whatever game you're playing that you just earned some points, but how you friends get to know it as well. Rumor: Images of new Xbox 360 dashboard leaked

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2538 days, 18 hours, 38 minutes ago
Thursday, July 15, 2010 8:54:29 AM GMT
Ready for the new New Xbox Experience? French site Logic-Sunrise has posted shots of what appears to be a new version of the Xbox 360 Dashboard interface -- or a really Microsoft-esque fake. In addition to an updated appearance, this purported UI features a "Natal Tuner" application and a "Natal" setup process (which cutely directs requests for help to the @xboxsupport Twitter account). Sega scraps plans for Aliens vs. Predator support on consoles

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2538 days, 18 hours, 45 minutes ago
Thursday, July 15, 2010 8:47:04 AM GMT
According to a post on the game's forum by a Sega community manager, plans for future patches for Aliens vs. Predator have been inexplicably canceled. In said post, the Sega representative (posting under the username Clumsyorchid) laments, "I apologize, as I know there are many features and updates that you'd like to see. I'll keep fighting internally for this to happen, but until I hear otherwise, there will not be a console patch for either Xbox or PS3." (more)

No doubt busy with Windows Phone 7, its new mobile OS set for launch at the end of the year, Microsoft has kept pretty quiet about iPhone 4. However, it seems one Microsoft executive couldn't resist making just one smug remark about Apple's latest iPhone. (more)

Play Kinect at Macy's because Macy's is all about gaming

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2542 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes ago
Sunday, July 11, 2010 8:40:30 AM GMT
While interest in both Kinect and Move may not be the greatest in the world according to people who keep track of these things that doesn't mean that Microsoft is shoving Kinect into everyone's face as much as they possibly can in every possible way. Their next promotion aimed at grabbing the casual market five years after Nintendo is letting customers at Macy's play Kinect. (more)

We've discussed some of the unique weapons you'll be wielding in Ron Gilbert's upcoming XBLA and PSN title, DeathSpank, but you really can't get a good feel for them until you see them in action. It's like, you can read about the Demon Poop Hammer all day, but you've really got to see it swing. (more)

Hold your breath for Sniper: Ghost Warrior patch

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2543 days, 18 hours, 15 minutes ago
Saturday, July 10, 2010 9:18:03 AM GMT
City Interactive has announced that a patch is headed to its recently released sneaky shooter, Sniper: Ghost Warrior. The patch is set to fix some GUI problems -- including multiplayer stats -- and will also fix some multiplayer bugs, like the ability to run outside the map. Multiplayer will also see the "Increased ability" for a player to hold his breath. Perhaps most importantly, the patch will fix a crashing issue on the PC version. (more)

Gears of War, BioShock Added to GFWL Download

If you haven't checked out Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service for the PC lately, you might be in for a little shock. When the stand-alone client was first introduced last year, only a few PC games were available to purchase and download including Viva Pinata, Fallout 3, Shadowrun and a few others. Now the service offers 49 games to download--but only 9 demos to test drive. Go figure. (more)

We know Dead Space-dev Visceral Games has had its eye on the downloadable space -- along with the rest of EA -- for some time now with the oft-rumored Jack the Ripper title and something else. Well, that something else is Dead Space Ignition, "the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2," says Dead Space franchise exec producer Steve Papoutsis. NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown appeals dismissed lawsuit against EA

Jim Brown, nine-season running back for the Cleveland Browns and NFL Hall of Fame inductee, filed a lawsuit against Electronic Arts in 2008 for using his likeness in Madden '09 without first obtaining his permission. Last September, U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper (who passed away in January from lymphoma) ruled that EA was protected by First Amendment rights -- a decision which Brown is now attempting to overturn in a San Francisco appellate court. A look at gaming's many revolutions

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2547 days, 19 hours, 8 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:24:46 AM GMT
Patriotism may not be my favorite thing ever, but I do love a good revolution. That's a big part of why I love the videogame industry. In television, movies and music, truly revolutionary moments are few and far between. In videogames, they hit every couple of years, if not sooner. No artistic medium that I know of has evolved this far, this quickly. Knowing that videogames are in a perpetual growth spurt makes scouring for gaming news every morning a daily exercise in excitement. (more)

Console APB still in question, Realtime Worlds explains

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2547 days, 19 hours, 15 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:17:07 AM GMT
There was a time when Realtime Words' APB was planned for consoles, but as it fights for survival on PC retail and virtual shelves, it appears it still hasn't found the right publishing partner for a console version. Realtime Worlds Creative Director Dave Jones tells Eurogamer that a console version won't happen until it finds a publishing partner and works out several other logistics, including pricing and "running dedicated servers for console" MMOs. Xbox Live Deals of the Week: Mega Man 10, Scrap Metal, Death By Cube, and After Burner Climax

If you're anything like us, you're spending today avoiding the family that only comes around once or twice a year and hanging out with the ol' Xbox 360 (preferably with air conditioning as well). And though we have tons of games from the unusually busy first half of this year to still play catch up with, who are we to turn down this week's Xbox Live Arcade deals? Out of the four titles -- Mega Man 10, Scrap Metal, Death By Cube, and After Burner Climax -- all but one are half off, and even that one (Scra... (more)

Review: Crackdown 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2547 days, 19 hours, 27 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:05:38 AM GMT
As the always astute Chris Hecker once pointed out, the thing video games do best are power fantasies. While we're literally trying to rescue our family or kill the evil guy, the metaphorical (and arguably more important) journey is in watching our character grow from weakling to demigod, whether that's through the collection of the most powerful weapons or the fastest cars. The balance then is in making the literal journey just present enough that the metaphorical one means something. (more)

What's that? The Maloof Money Cup DLC from early last month for Skate 3 wasn't enough to quench your desire for more skateboard-based hooliganery? Well perhaps the addition of a new skater (Danny Way) in a new locale (Hawaii) with 24 new challenges will help? Have a first look at Skate 3's "Hawaiian Dream" content pack just after the break. New Xbox 360 250GB review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2549 days, 18 hours, 57 minutes ago
Sunday, July 04, 2010 8:35:57 AM GMT
When we first saw its face in a Italian ad, more than one Engadget editor called its bluff: "The top half doesn't line up with the bottom," some said, "that's got to be Photoshopped." While that early image was indeed CG, the form factor was certainly not -- the new Xbox 360 sports enough sleek angles and disappearing curves we've taken to calling it the Stealthbox. As mother always told you, though, it's what's inside that counts; does that glossy exterior house any improvements, or is it hiding just an... (more)

Imagine this scenario: prior to 2010, a company witnessed three strange deaths and two suicides. Then, when 2010 rolled over, said company played host to twelve suicide attempts on its Longhua campus, ten of which actually resulted in death. Now imagine someone forcing you to work for said company. Even more importantly, imagine that you're still just a 17-year-old student. (more)
