Microsoft pretends that people are terrified of buttons

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2650 days, 2 hours, 55 minutes ago
Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:32:21 PM GMT
That's how Microsoft believes you think. At least according Project Natal demagogue Marc Whitten, who believes that buttons are "locking" consumers out enjoying videogames. What a stroke of luck, then, that Project Natal is completely bereft of these confusing and distressing contraptions, eh? "If you counted the number of buttons in your living room, it would send a chill down your spine," said Whitten, with astounding melodrama. "A lot of people can play games amazingly well, but others feel locked out... (more)

This Might be the Coolest Xbox 360 Case Mod Ever

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2652 days, 3 hours, 4 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 7:23:14 PM GMT
To celebrate 1 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in Australia and New Zealand, Microsoft and the David Peachey Foundation are having a charity auction called Konsoles for Kids, where special modded Xbox 360s are put on eBay and the proceeds from the auctions will go towards the charity. While there some pretty interesting airbrush paintjobs of Russell Crowe and Kelly Rowland, complete with signatures, the real standout so far is the mod job comes from Richard Taylor from WETA Workshop, who were involved in... Microsoft accused of using Chinese child labor

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2653 days, 4 hours, 21 minutes ago
Monday, April 19, 2010 6:05:50 PM GMT
Microsoft has been caught in a nasty controversy after revelations that one of its suppliers in China may be using child labor. The kids are allegedly making mice, keyboards and Xbox 360 controllers for $0.65 an hour. Although Microsoft itself has not officially sanctioned this sweatshop and its 16-hour workdays, the company is still under fire from National Labor Committee. The real villain of the piece is KYE, a company that makes small children briefly sleep at their work stations in dismal conditions... (more)

The Dogs of War: Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft

If you think about it, what's shocking isn't the size of Microsoft or Apple, companies that are decades old, established titans of industry (even if they have stumbled in the past)—it's Google. In just over 10 years, Google's become arguably the most important company on the web, spreading to anything the internet touches with astonishing speed, almost like a virus: From the web and search to books, video, mobile phones, operating systems, and soon, your TV. Friends have become enemies, enemies more para... (more)

Microsoft shows how Natal recognizes players, gender

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2656 days, 14 hours, 15 minutes ago

Have you ever wondered what Project Natal actually sees through its beady, robotic eyes? A direct feed of the Natal's point-of-view was recently revealed to the audience of Microsoft Israel R&D's "Think Next" convention yesterday afternoon. Just past the jump, you can check out NextGen-News' video of a live demonstration from Microsoft VP of Hardware and Technology Dr. Ilan Spillinger and a female participant, both of whose genders and movements were successfully identified and Avatar-ified by Natal. Crackdown 2 is going to be big. If you have any doubt that the superhero fantasy conduit will be a meaty prospect, get a load of this -- Ruffian has promised that the sequel will feature "thousands" of enemies on the screen at any given time. That's quite a lot! "During the day you've got to battle against The Cell, which is the remnants of the gangs and civilians who have joined together against The Agency," explains executive producer Peter Connelly. "So you've got quite a formidable set of adversaries... (more)

In early February, Microsoft announced that it will be shutting down the original Xbox Live service tomorrow on April 15, 2010. That means that games still being played over Xbox Live, such as Halo 2 and Counter-Strike, will no longer have online functionality after the shut off date. Xbox and Xbox Originals will still work in their offline modes. (more)

Why The Halo MMO Was Cancelled

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2659 days, 14 hours, 30 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 13, 2010 7:56:59 AM GMT
A few years ago, Microsoft-owned Ensemble Studios, the team behind Age of Empires, was working on a Halo massively-multiplayer online game, code-named Titan. That project ended up a bust, and was cancelled by Microsoft. Here's why. "We had all this incredible talent, we had the right people, the right passion, we had a phenomenally successful IP - the Halo IP", says Dusty Monk, formerly of Ensemble. (more)

How Could Fable III Use Natal?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2660 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes ago
Monday, April 12, 2010 8:53:43 AM GMT
Very few games have been confirmed to be supporting Project Natal, Microsoft's upcoming hands-free motion controller. Fable III is one of them. It also happens to be a more traditional game that can still be played from start to finish with a standard Xbox 360 controller. So, how will it use Natal? Common sense points to an integration that extends the game and makes it more interactive rather than a disjointed separate feature. (more)

April 9, 2010 - It's been two years since GTA IV hit store shelves and no new content has come to PS3. That's because Microsoft dropped some serious cash to secure the rights to two downloadable episodes. The exclusivity has run out and PS3 owners finally have the chance to extend their GTA experience. (more)

The Halo Movie is Still Happening, Says Microsoft

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 12 hours, 56 minutes ago
Sunday, April 11, 2010 9:31:09 AM GMT
It's been a while since we've heard anything positive regarding the possibility of a Halo movie. The on-again-off-again status of the movie has teased Halo fans for years. However, a few years back, the project was declared completely dead. Microsoft's Frank O'Connor has provided renewed hope for those desperate to see the Master Chief on the silver screen. IGN reports that speaking at MI6 in San Francisco last week, O'Connor said that they are going to make the movie, but when the time is right. (more)

Speaking at a session during the MI6 marketing conference in San Francisco last week, franchise development director Frank O'Connor discussed the challenges and benefits of expanding the Halo brand into other entertainment mediums. You might remember our writing about Windows 95 running on the iPhone in July of last year. The iSoft team achieved this using the Bochs emulator and an original Windows 95 image. Well it would seem the folks at iSoft have done it again. After receiving an email from someone named Pavel Egorkin, we did a little research and it turns out Pavel is part of the iSoft dev team. Pavel sent us the following video of Windows 95 running on an iPad. (more)

What Happens When Apple Passes Microsoft In Value? Yes, When.

posted by adminadmin 2676 days, 19 hours, 58 minutes ago
Saturday, March 27, 2010 2:29:46 AM GMT
Apple’s stock is up over $3 today, pushing it past the $230-a-share mark. Microsoft’s is down $0.25, pushing it below the $30-a-share mark. While this discrepancy is huge on the surface, it doesn’t mean all that much because there are many, many more outstanding shares of Microsoft stock out there on the market (ten times more, in fact). That’s why Microsoft’s market cap is higher than Apple’s, despite the individual stock price difference. But that market cap gap is closing. Quickly. Apple looks poised... (more)
