Man Caught Using Cell Phone Jammer on Bus

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2087 days, 20 hours, 9 minutes ago
Monday, March 05, 2012 7:41:07 AM GMT
No doubt we've all been in a situation where someone is talking loudly on their cell phone with little regard for those around them. But beyond throwing the offending person the filthiest look you can afford, or perhaps even asking them to keep their voice down, there's not a whole lot that can be done. After all, it's a free country, right? (more)

This Week in Facebook: Offers, Ads and Timeline for Pages

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2090 days, 18 hours, 58 minutes ago
Friday, March 02, 2012 8:51:32 AM GMT
Facebook's gently unveiled a raft of changes to its policies to boost advertising on the social network. It unveiled Timeline for pages, meaning that companies can now start uploading baby pictures and changing the cover photo every day. While adverts have been traditionally restricted to the right-rail of the site, now they'll be jammed in at will -- including in your mobile app (which the company conceded it wasn't "monetizing"), timeline and log in / out pages. Waking Mars, the IGF finalist formerly known as Lost Mars, has been approved for human consumption and will be available on Apple's App Store come March 1, according to developer Tiger Style's Twitter account. The action-gardening platformer will set you back a solid $4.99, is both iPhone and iPad compatible, and as we discovered last September, looks "stunning." (more)

Mozilla surprised us last summer when it announced plans for its Boot to Gecko mobile OS. Now, it looks like the project has some industry support, with CTO Brenden Eich tweeting that the company will make a partner announcement at MWC this month. Snag this crazy iOS peripheral, get free ride in a police car

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2118 days, 17 hours, 40 minutes ago

This happens to us every time: We walk into the cell phone store, search the displays excitedly, and are immediately disappointed by the lack of small firearms for sale. Every time. Mobile games developer Metal Compass is looking to change this depressing experience with the Xappr, a gun-shaped smartphone peripheral for a selection of augmented-reality and shooting apps, including AR Invaders and Spray'Em. Xappr is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices, although no Windows games are available ... (more)

Capy posts ideas from its internal game jam, and they all sound pretty good

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2121 days, 19 hours, 50 minutes ago

Given the talent of the folks at Capy Software (who've made the excellent Critter Crunch, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, and most of the programming behind Sword and Sworcery), you'd expect them to prototype an interesting game in less time than it takes some to develop a full game. You're partially right -- they made seven. (more)

Creepy Japanese title Nanashi no Game phones in a sequel (in Japan)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2125 days, 17 hours, 40 minutes ago

Call us masochists, but we were really looking forward to the stateside release of Japanese horror title Nanashi no Game, or its sequel, Nanashi no Game Me (trailer above) for the DS. Neither of these made the trip -- evil spirits are afraid of flying, we assume -- and now there is one more Nanashi no Game title we can feel left out on, Nanashi no Appli, out today for iOS devices in Japan. Zynga's paid $300 per new user in the past nine months, says analyst

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2130 days, 17 hours, 39 minutes ago
Sunday, January 22, 2012 10:11:01 AM GMT
Zynga has been struggling with its stock price since the IPO late last year, and Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia says there are more dark days ahead. When you compare Zynga's $120 million marketing budget to its recent rise in only 400,000 new players (about $300 a person), the numbers don't look good: "We know that, on average, these people are spending about $150 or so," says Bhatia, which suggests that Zynga is spending about $300 for every $150 in profit. "That math won't work for very long," obvio... (more)

Portabliss: Run Roo Run (iOS)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2135 days, 18 hours, 14 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 9:35:57 AM GMT
It's a simple platformer that avoids the problems so many iOS platform games face, by combining a traditional-style platformer with auto-run mechanics. The levels are smaller and more carefully designed than most auto-runners, so you still have tricky, precise jumps planned out by an evil genius, but protagonist Roo runs automatically like in a Canabalt-type game, sparing you the heartbreak of having to deal with virtual directional controls. Razer tests the waters with Project Fiona at CES

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2135 days, 18 hours, 15 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 9:34:41 AM GMT
Razer's Project Fiona looks just like you'd expect a prototype to look. Despite a thick but standard tablet-style body and 10.1 inch touchscreen, it has some unfinished aluminum struts sticking out of either side, with not-quite-perfect joysticks and buttons placed unceremoniously on the top. In short, it's a manufactured idea and not a real product just yet. And Razer's purpose at CES last week was to judge, reps told me, just how good that idea actually was. (more)

Minecraft hits 20 million registered users

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2137 days, 16 hours, 47 minutes ago

Mojang mastermind Notch has tweeted that Minecraft has reached the 20 million user milestone, and that if each user weighed 154 pounds, that Minecraft's total player base would equal 25 percent of the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It's an interesting statistic, if somewhat of a stretch, only because it got us thinking about other ways to arbitrarily compartmentalize that sort of information. (more)
