Japanese hardware sales, June 14 - June 20: Rise of the Touchables edition

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2525 days, 6 hours, 14 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:38:50 AM GMT
As you text-skippers have already noticed, there's been a pretty significant shake-up in this week's Japanese hardware sales chart, with all three incarnations of the Nintendo DS getting substantial sales boosts. There's been a lot of speculation as to how these increases came about -- most seem to think it has something to do with Japan's recent discounting of all three handhelds, as well as the introduction of new colors for the current king supreme, the DSi LL. Activision Defends GoldenEye Wii Exclusivity

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2525 days, 6 hours, 21 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:32:00 AM GMT
Gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter said during E3 2010 that Activision's remake of GoldenEye: 007 would do better on the Xbox 360 than the Nintendo Wii. To be more specific, he said that the game would have a "better chance" if developed by Rare--the team behind the original Nintendo 64 classic--for the Microsoft console than the Eurocom rehash slated for the less-endowed Wii. Destructoid Discusses: 3D at E3 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2528 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes ago
Friday, June 25, 2010 7:57:45 AM GMT
Maybe two-thirds of what we saw at E3 involved 3D technology. Hell, Sony even had us wearing 3D glasses at their press conference! There was 3D racing, 3D platforming, 3D shooting and even 3D portables with "3D" in the name. Following this year's also 3D-heavy Consumer Electronics Show, it seems that the gaming world is getting the goofy glasses, like it or not. (more)

Skilled Sin and Punishment 2 player puts us to shame

Let's get this out of the way because I know it's the first thing that popped into your mind: no, this isn't as cool as double-handed Ikaruga or countless bullet hell videos made possible only through years of dedicated training. It just isn't -- plain and simple. (more)

DS Sherlock Holmes trailer entirely devoid of murder

If you've ever dreamed of being Sherlock Holmes and solving a dastardly murder, you won't be fulfilling that fantasy on DS. No, Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Osborne House has you solving puzzles and investigating a more mundane case. But hey, there's enough murder in video games already, right? (more)

Kingdom Hearts: Re:Coded getting graphics and combat upgrade, FF13 cameo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2529 days, 6 hours, 1 minute ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:51:24 AM GMT
The latest Famitsu has an interview with Square Enix producer Tetsuya Nomura about Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, the game originally leaked by a voice actor and then officially announced at E3 last week. The title is indeed a remake of the mobile phone game from Japan -- Square Enix found that none of the phones required to play the game were sold in North America, so it decided to bring it to the Nintendo DS instead. The hardware will bring 3D models into some parts of the game, and the battle system will be... (more)

Nintendo's Fils-Aime promises 'commitment' to improve online experience

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2529 days, 6 hours, 5 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:47:52 AM GMT
Nintendo enjoys breaking conventions. Disruptive ideas have been part of the company's heritage, and while some innovations set industry standards -- from the D-Pad to motion controls -- other ideas seem different for the sake of being unique. Case in point: Nintendo's implementation of online in both the Wii and DS. In an interview with IndustryGamers, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted that the company has shortcomings in that arena. "The online ... or let me state it more broadly,... Sony talks sh*t about 3DS technology

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2532 days, 5 hours, 12 minutes ago

So, Nintendo murdered everyone at E3, not just with its rather terrifying selection of awesome games, but with its stunning 3DS demonstration. If you haven't seen the thing in action, let me confirm that it's pretty amazing stuff. Sony boss Kaz Hirai hasn't seen the 3DS, but that didn't stop him chatting sh*t about the technology behind it. Preview: Ivy the Kiwi?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2532 days, 5 hours, 20 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:32:54 AM GMT
For some reason, I thought of Prope's Ivy the Kiwi? as a mellow title, a generally relaxing and lightweight game -- at least that's what I thought before actually playing the game. To my surprise, I was presented with a challenging, often chaotic arcade game instead of a frothy, low-impact diversion. It's just the kind of game I seek out, actually -- a game whose challenge comes from mastering a single, unique gameplay mechanic. (more)

Preview: Batman: The Brave and the Bold

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2532 days, 5 hours, 29 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:23:54 AM GMT
Despite starring the same character, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and last year's Batman: Arkham Asylum are worlds apart. Rocksteady's game used Unreal technology to realistically render a Grim & Gritty(tm) Gotham in which Batman has to rely on his detective skills and the element of surprise to survive every encounter. The Brave and the Bold, however, is brightly colored and brimming with cartoon flourishes, and stars a Batman who punches thugs with abandon in broad daylight. (more)

E3 10: The greatest Nintendo commercial ever made

This year's E3 was full of amazing things, and while Nintendo clearly came in second to Konami when it came to press conferences they did have many epic moments. No moment was more epic than Reggie Fils-Aime getting lit on fire by Bowser. This happened in the greatest Nintendo commercial ever: the commercial for the 3DS. (more)

Our hands-on preview of High Voltage Games' The Grinder brought about a fairly surreal statement on our part. A brief explanation: Players pick up a number of throwable secondary weapons, including your basic frag grenades, as well as weirder fare, such as baby dolls which monsters will swarm on when dropped. Of course, once we'd grabbed a number of these pickups, a completely logical question came to mind (more)

Japan juiced for Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2541 days, 5 hours, 11 minutes ago

Ghost Trick is being promoted by Japan's "Juicer Bar" franchise with a themed juice drink, made of blackcurrant, blueberries, and a "mystery flavor." In keeping with the game, we're guessing it's arsenic -- you have to go back in time and possess the juice machine to stop your drink from being made. (more)

Rumor: 3DS specifics plus a mock-up

Ooh, now this is exciting. Kotaku, using a number of sources including a sketch by an unnamed Chinese blogger who purportedly has a 3DS dev kit, has come up with an outline of expected features for the handheld. We only have a few days until the official reveal, sure, but this is too crazy not to talk about. Those with a heart condition and anyone who can't handle taking gaming coverage with a fistful of salt, please leave the room. It's said that in addition to a standard d-pad, the 3DS will make full ... (more)

I've played a lot of golf games over the years, from the arcadey Hot Shots series to my all-time favorite, Links 2004. But I've never played anything quite like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. For someone new to the series on Wii, its MotionPlus controls aren't just a revelation -- they're the only way I want to play golf games from now on. (more)
