Side-scrolling Mario Galaxy 2 footage is delightful

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2674 days, 6 hours, 16 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:49:24 AM GMT
Amongst all gamers of a certain age, there exists a very special, very sensitive part of the brain. The particular section is flooded with pleasure-inducing chemicals upon seeing Mario jump on (and subsequently flatten!) a Goomba. This effect is actually doubled when seen in a 2D context, so we have to append the latest Super Mario Galaxy 2 video with a warning: Prepare your pleasure centers, this one is a doozy. If you think you can handle it, watch the video after the break. (more)

Nintendo explains Metroid: Other M, Sin & Punishment 2 delays

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2674 days, 6 hours, 16 minutes ago

Nintendo delayed two of its big summer titles for Wii today: Metroid: Other M (to August 31) and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (to June 27). When the company made the announcement, it provided no reasons. As it turns out, there is a decent reason for each delay. (more)

The main highlight of the latest transmission from Fort Nintendo is that Bit.Trip Runner, the quirky rhythm-platformer from Aksys Games, is scheduled for release on WiiWare on May 17. Seriously, guys -- get on the hype train before it pulls out of the station. As for DSiWare, there's a whole bunch of games being released over the next few months, including Photo Dojo, X-Scape and Metal Torrent. Head past the break for the full list of whats and whens. Jett Rocket trailer takes off

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2674 days, 6 hours, 18 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:46:46 AM GMT
Developer Shin'en released a trailer for its WiiWare platformer Jett Rocket. Let's just get this out of the way: Wow, this looks nice for a WiiWare game. We're kind of amazed by how nice the environments and the lighting effects look! It seems like there are plenty of interesting elements (or gimmicks) in the levels, as well. Oh, not to mention that the protagonist has a jetpack. (more)

Bayer's 'Didget' turns diabetes testing into a game

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2674 days, 6 hours, 19 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:45:53 AM GMT
We can only imagine how difficult and frustrating it must be for a young person diagnosed with diabetes to get into the regular routine of testing their blood glucose level. In an attempt to make this process easier, and to "help build good monitoring habits," Bayer has created the Didget meter, a glucose-measuring device which can connect to an accompanying Nintendo DS game, unlocking in-game rewards for players who test regularly. Rare NES game 'Ufouria' rated by OFLC, Virtual Console release possible

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2676 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes ago
Friday, April 23, 2010 9:52:45 PM GMT
Sunsoft has started to revitalize its brand with the help of Gaijinworks' Victor Ireland. The strategy includes re-releases of classic games on Nintendo's Virtual Console, including Blaster Master, and the creation of original content -- also Blaster Master, actually. If a new rating by the Australian OFLC board is any indication, Sunsoft is planning a Virtual Console release of Ufouria: The Saga, a rare NES game that never made it to North America. (more)

Here's how Super Mario Galaxy 2's 'Super Guide' works

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2678 days, 15 hours, 25 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 8:39:57 PM GMT
I got to check out Super Mario Galaxy 2 at Nintendo yesterday and one of the new things that was revealed to me was Galaxy 2's version of the Super Guide feature seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. There's actually two systems in place to aid players: Hint TV and the Cosmic Guide. Mario will come across special TVs in levels which will show him how to get across certain sections. In one of the levels in the Fluffy Bluff Galaxy, there's a large open space that Mario needs to get across using the cloud suit... (more)

Okamiden and Sengoku Basara Confirmed for US Release

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2679 days, 16 hours, 35 minutes ago

How companies decide which of their franchises will get a global release and which game games will never leave their native land is an esoteric process. But at a recent Capcom press event, the Japanese developer/publisher revealed two titles that are definitely destined for the worldwide market: Okamiden and Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. (more)

Nintendo ships Wii Classic Controller Pro to sweaty-palmed Americans

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2679 days, 16 hours, 52 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 7:13:21 PM GMT
Nothing like coming through on a promise, right? You bet. If you'll recall, the Big N assured us all back in January that the jumbo-sized Wii Classic Controller Pro would begin shipping to America in April, and sure enough, that's exactly what it has done. After giving the Japanese a few months head-start, both the white and black accessories are now shipping from none other than Amazon for the tidy sum of $19.99 apiece. And yes, gift wrapping is available for a nominal fee. (more)

I love charts. We get blasted with videogame sales data repeatedly, but you never get the big picture, especially with console sales data. You always get some kind of spin or complementary comparison that does little to show you overall progress. (more)

Total Sales Put Nintendo DS Back on Top in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2682 days, 17 hours, 1 minute ago
Saturday, April 17, 2010 7:03:53 PM GMT
Following a brief surge by the PlayStation 3 thanks to last month's release of Yakuza 4, the Nintendo DS is back on top in Japan. Nintendo's handheld managed to move a total of 36,459 units across its three SKUs compared to the PS3's 28,973 (via GamesIndustry.biz). In a week where hardware sales were generally down, the PSP-3000 managed to outperform the individual Nintendo DS SKUs with a total of 29,766 units sold. The PlayStation 2 and the PSP Go brought up the rear with 1,425 and 1,826 units respectiv... (more)

Nintendo Sued By Interactive Exercise Company Over Wii Fit

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2684 days, 3 hours, 50 minutes ago

If you thought that a woman supposedly contracting persistent sexual arousal syndrome due to a Wii Fit injury would be the strangest controversy the game would ever be involved in, well, you're right. But here's another new controversy: Gamasutra reports that interactive exercise company IA Labs is suing Nintendo for allegedly infringing on two of their patents with Wii Fit -- and a number of other Wii products. As much as I love Super Mario Galaxy, and as excited as I am about the sequel, I'm all about the plumber moving from left to right in 2D. It's less about nostalgia and more about my desire to partake in simple, polished platforming. That's why I was so glad to hear about 2D in Super Mario Galaxy 2. (more)

Mega64 shows off the Nintendo 3DS's revolutionary tech -- Joystiq

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2685 days, 3 hours, 5 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:59:54 AM GMT
We're not quite sure what we like best about the new video from comedy goldmine Mega64 after the break: the proposed lifelike tech behind the upcoming Nintendo 3DS (we've got our fingers crossed!) or that Korn is currently recording a new song for Haze 2. It's probably the Haze 2 thing. Regardless, it's a great spoof on an upcoming gaming handheld we know virtually nothing about, which kinda makes the handheld the easiest thing to make fun of right now. Besides Haze, of course. It's been about two months since Nintendo and Monolith Soft took the veils off Xenoblade, the new RPG from producer Tetsuya Takahashi and his team. Nintendo was originally planning a spring release for the Wii fantasy epic, but that's since been pushed back a bit -- according to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Xenoblade will now touch down in Japan on June 10 for 6800 yen. DSiWare Capsule Reviews: Week of April 12, 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 2 hours, 27 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 9:37:40 AM GMT
The Nintendo DSi is quickly becoming a platform of its own. The system, released in April 2009, isn't much more than upgraded Nintendo DS technology, but its built-in cameras and its incorporated data storage give developers more to work with. And the DSi Shop can be a virtual sandbox for game creators to incorporate the DSi capabilities into downloadable titles. Or it's just an easy way to get simple DS ideas into gamers' hands without going the much more expensive retail route. (more)

Why Shooters Are Better on Wii

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 2 hours, 28 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 9:36:26 AM GMT
I hate using the word "better" to describe a game. For a while now, I've wanted to move it onto the trash heap alongside "good," "bad," and "important," words that sound audacious but don't actually describe anything. That's the trap I've laid for myself, so let it be said here, if nowhere else: Wii shooters are better than the rest. Full stop. Hopefully you haven't snapped your mouse in rage while reading that. If you have, I promise to try and tell you just how and why so that loss won't have been in v... (more)

Wii Controllers Do Not Infringe Patents

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2686 days, 2 hours, 34 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 9:30:45 AM GMT
Nintendo's video game controllers do not infringe on a patent by Anascape Ltd., according to a court ruling today. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Nintendo's controllers -- including the Wii Remote, Nunchuck, Classic Controller and various Gamecube controllers -- do not infringe on various patents filed by Anascape. This judgement reverses a 2008 decision in Texas, which would have forced Nintendo to stop selling its signature controllers. (more)

Nintendo Downloads Bring Zaxxon, Military Madness

Monday is again upon us, and that means more Nintendo downloadable releases. This week provides a light but significant Wii crop, alongside several DSi releases. For WiiWare, we have Military Madness: Nectaris (above) from Hudson for 1,000 points ($10). The turn-based strategy series makes its return with shiny new visuals, a Commander unit, online multiplayer co-op modes, and leaderboards. If you were a fan of the series, it may be worth looking into. The lone Virtual Console release this week is the ar... (more)
