Runner 2 revisits retro

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1757 days, 3 hours, 58 minutes ago
Saturday, August 04, 2012 9:49:42 AM GMT
The first Bit.Trip Runner had a generally "retro" look, with bonus levels that imitated the Atari 2600's Pitfall. Runner 2 has its own pixelated levels, as revealed in this latest trailer and screens. It appears that Gaijin Games has shifted its reference point a few years into the future. (more)

Closed beta for Painkiller: Hell & Damnation has arrived

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1758 days, 5 hours, 43 minutes ago
Friday, August 03, 2012 8:04:28 AM GMT
So long as it stays close to the original game, more Painkiller sounds like a very good thing to me. That's why Painkiller: Hell & Damnation seems great in theory. If The Farm 51 can deliver fast-paced first-person shooting, monstrous enemy designs, and satisfying weapons -- all wrapped together nicely using the Unreal Engine 3 -- I'm in. (more)

Preview: MechWarrior Online

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1758 days, 5 hours, 52 minutes ago
Friday, August 03, 2012 7:55:44 AM GMT
The MechWarrior property is an oldie. Perhaps even unrecognizable to some, as there hasn’t been a proper entry in like ten years; I know it in name and concept only, having seen box art or occasional screens. Accordingly, I was not quite prepared for what I was getting myself into with MechWarrior Online. (more)

Dishonored is being shown off this weekend at QuakeCon 2012, and if you can't make it down to Texas, here's the next best thing: Load up the gallery below, and flick through the pictures really quickly. All right, that won't work, but at least you'll get to see some brand-new (and creepy) screens from the much-anticipated game. (more)

Review: La-Mulana (Remake)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1759 days, 5 hours, 4 minutes ago
Thursday, August 02, 2012 8:43:31 AM GMT
I wouldn't have endured so much torture if the journey itself wasn't compelling. It's such a rich and engrossing adventure, filled with more to see and do per square inch than many games offer in a meager six-hour runtime. La-Mulana may have been originally developed to recapture the spirit of retro gaming (particularly the Japanese age of MSX software), but the result is a true evolution to 2D sidescrolling action. Analyst Doug Creutz has warned investors that EA's annual attempt to start a fight with Activision won't do too well this year. He believes Medal of Honor: Warfighter will lose sales due to the poor quality of the last MOH title, as well as a noted drop in consumer interest. (more)

Arguably one of the most important components in PC gaming is the mouse. To play at your max, you've got to have the precision and control for your favorite first-person shooter, MMO, or whatever game you play, so it only makes sense to have a kickass mouse, right? (more)

Star Wars: The Old Republic is going free-to-play

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 5 hours, 29 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:19:04 AM GMT
How this works: Players will have access to all eight character class storylines up to level 50, with some restrictions. Going beyond this level to access new game content and features can happen through subscriptions and individual purchases. So, this is like a hybrid F2P model, and microtransations can get you past that level 50 barrier if needed. (more)

Orcs Must Die! 2 review: Co-op and then some

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:16:03 AM GMT
Somehow, they're through. Despite my spike traps, acid sprayers and brimstone, a small contingent of the orc horde is now within hugs-n-kisses range. The blunderbuss shotgun smears some of the frontrunners, but their numbers are simply too great. With my life bar on its last pixel, an orc, axe raised high overhead, prepares for the final strike. Then my smarmy buddy steps in and blasts that sucker into oblivion, because this is Orcs Must Die! 2, and co-op is glorious. (more)

An amalgamation of dungeon crawlers and strategy titles, Dungeonland is definitely not the type of game you see often. On one end, it's a hack-and-slash, class-based dungeon crawler, almost reminiscent of Diablo. From the other, it plays like a quasi-strategy title. (more)

For those not familiar, A Game of Dwarves is a PC strategy game built in the same vein as Dungeon Keeper, taking more than a few pages from the classic strategy-based god games of the 1990s, with helpings of Sim City and Minecraft throughout. Almost everyone knows about Playdead's Limbo, but the followup to that project, so far known only as "Project 2," is still shrouded in secrecy. Project 2, revealed a little while ago in a Danish grant report and listed as a 2014 release, is being developed in Unity, according to game director Arnt Jensen. (more)
