Reef Entertainment's Rambo game still exists, with the publisher announcing plans to exhibit a playable build of the console and PC game on the Gamescom show floor in August. In a bold display of Rambo-esque machismo, Reef has called the new game "Rambo: The Video Game," instantly tossing aside the eight previous Rambo video games released to date. (more)

Voice acting in RPGs may be more trouble than it's worth

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1984 days, 47 minutes ago
Sunday, July 08, 2012 8:37:10 AM GMT
Jennifer Hale, Nolan North and Troy Baker, among others, have become video game celebrities for their voice acting – deservedly so, given how entertaining they can be as characters like Commander Shepard or Nathan Drake. Recorded speech has become a significant component of most all games, notably RPGs, having grown steadily since the shift to CD-ROM games in the mid-1990s. Yet their importance isn't always apparent. Remember the slickly produced teaser trailer for The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing? It turns out that said trailer was pretty far removed from the actual gameplay. Based on newly released footage, it appears that Van Helsing's PC and XBLA adventure will be of the dungeon-crawling variety. (more)

Blizzard: Diablo 3's 'item hunt' endgame isn't sustainable

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1986 days, 18 minutes ago
Friday, July 06, 2012 9:05:14 AM GMT
Diablo 3's current endgame, a supposedly endless item-hunt and enemy-slaughtering system, isn't as infinite as Blizzard first hoped it would be, and players are quickly running out of things to do, community manager Bashiok writes in the Battle.net forums. Blizzard is aware of this problem and is considering options for a more succinct endgame solution. (more)

Battlefield 3 will implement a feature called Matches, allowing players to coordinate competitive multiplayer games with a specific set of friends and squad members for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. To set up a match, players must first be actively renting a dedicated server. They can then set up a custom match, choosing name, time, game mode, team size and maps through Battlelog. (more)

Snapshot: Krater (PC)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1986 days, 21 minutes ago
Friday, July 06, 2012 9:02:51 AM GMT
Krater defies our usual classifications. At first glance, it appears to be a dungeon crawler, replete with monsters, spells and loot. And yet, it also has elements of real-time strategy, with players managing multiple units, each with their own abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Further still, we've got traditional role-playing elements, including an overworld map and even random encounters. (more)

Review: The Real Texas

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1990 days, 1 hour, 25 minutes ago
Monday, July 02, 2012 7:58:32 AM GMT
The Real Texas is a game that reminds me why I got into indie gaming in the first place: it's a unique experience unlike anything you'd find on store shelves. Immediately after I saw the launch trailer, I knew The Real Texas was going to be an entertaining game. What I didn't expect was an extremely well-written adventure through an incredibly quirky universe. (more)

Lara Croft is raiding Google Chrome later this year

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1992 days, 1 hour, 19 minutes ago

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was one of my favorite games of 2010. It came out of nowhere, and at first I was completely skeptical of the oddly isometric Tomb Raider game. After actually giving it a shot, I walked away pretty impressed, especially after reskinning it with two of my favorite video game anti-heroes of all time. (more)

In its first two weeks of availability, over 800,000 individuals have signed up for Battlefield 3 Premium. "We are very pleased with the performance so far," EA Games' Patrick Soderlund told USA Today. Still, Soderlund exercised caution on the outlook for Premium. "We're actually only two weeks into it, so it's a little early to tell how this is going to pay off. It certainly it looks very promising right now." Since launching in October, Battlefield 3 has shipped 15 million copies, Soderlund says. (more)
