Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning review: A tempting fate

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2054 days, 23 hours, 6 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 07, 2012 8:11:50 AM GMT
Confession time: I have not finished Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Over the last several days, I've poured over thirty hours into the enormous world. After twenty or so, I resolved to avoid secondary tasks and focus on primary quests, hoping to finish the campaign before composing this review. And then, after reaching a milestone in the story, it occurred to me: I don't want to do that. (more)

The Ferrari fanatics in attendance will want to keep an eye on Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends. The game revolves around this single brand and is due out on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in spring 2012. What got me to take a serious look was finding out who's developing it: Slightly Mad Studios. (more)

Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends announced by Atari

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2056 days, 20 hours, 8 minutes ago
Sunday, February 05, 2012 11:09:47 AM GMT
Atari has announced a new version of Test Drive, but instead of the open-world, tropical setting of the two Unlimited iterations, this time the franchise is headed back to the race track. Test Drive Ferrari Racing Legends will focus on Ferrari's history across almost all of the racing disciplines, including Formula One, rally racing, and GT. There will be over 50 different Ferrari vehicles to drive, and each will show off full realistic interior and exterior models, as well as damage effects, which means... (more)

Valve announces updates for Team Fortress 2 in 2012

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2058 days, 21 hours ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:17:26 AM GMT
If you thought Valve was simply going to put Team Fortress 2 out to the free-to-play ranch in 2012, then think again. A new blog post has announced a wealth of new content coming this year including the last "Meet The..." video in the series for the Pyro. Will we finally have the Pryo's gender confirmed? My bet is on Valve pulling a neat swerve on the issue just to confound us even more. (more)

Alan Wake on PC: Launch, tech features detailed

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2058 days, 21 hours, 1 minute ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:16:48 AM GMT
What you'll get with this PC version is high-res graphics and support for both multiscreen and 3D support. Now's your chance to see Alan Wake at every setting maxed. There's graphic support for lots of resolutions and ratios, and a multithreaded engine lets you make use of your fancy-ass quad core CPUs. Both Nvidia's stereoscopic 3D and AMD Eyefinity 3D are supported. Finally, there's new options to hide the hud and/or adjust the field of view. (more)

Take-Two Q3 financials down year-over-year, still within predictions

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2058 days, 21 hours, 7 minutes ago

Take-Two Interactive has released its financial figures for the third quarter of fiscal 2012, which ended on December 31, 2011. While "in line" with the publisher's predictions, results are down when compared year-over-year to the same period in fiscal 2011 (more)

The Rhythm Of The Quest in Fallout 3 and New Vegas

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2058 days, 21 hours, 8 minutes ago
Friday, February 03, 2012 10:09:42 AM GMT
Have you ever been horribly frustrated by one part of a game, only to think of it as the best and most memorable section of that game in retrospect? It's the ruins of D.C. for me. I played Fallout 3 on the PC a year or so after release, so the first thing I did was load up on mods, introducing different play balance, graphics, more weapons, and most motivating of all, more music for Galaxy News Radio. But at the start of the game, GNR is in trouble and the station's signal is weak. So I went to fix it as... (more)

Capy posts ideas from its internal game jam, and they all sound pretty good

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2061 days, 23 hours, 18 minutes ago

Given the talent of the folks at Capy Software (who've made the excellent Critter Crunch, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, and most of the programming behind Sword and Sworcery), you'd expect them to prototype an interesting game in less time than it takes some to develop a full game. You're partially right -- they made seven. (more)

The Binding of Isaac gets a grotesque retail edition

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2063 days, 22 hours ago
Sunday, January 29, 2012 9:17:26 AM GMT
It was only a few days ago that online retailer, Merge Games, announced they would be selling a retail version of Terraria, a collectors edition no less. Now another of my favorite indie games from last year is getting a retail special edition, The Binding of Isaac. Wee Isaac's battle to escape his mother's basement will be available from Merge Games on March 16th, but only in the UK. This version of the game comes with a Steam gift key, a DRM-free copy of the game, the awesome soundtrack, a grim poster ... (more)

It may not seem like that long ago, but way back in July of last year a little zombie-survival game by the name of Dead Block came out on XBLA and PSN. Now, about half a year later, the Call of Duty Zombie mode-esque downloadable title has found a new home on PC. (more)

Preview: Collisions are a glorious thing in DiRT Showdown

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2064 days, 19 hours, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, January 28, 2012 11:28:12 AM GMT
Codemaster's DiRT series has always been known for offering gamers a rally racing series with a great physics engine and smart A.I. opponents that push back as aggressively as the player pushes them. Perhaps the greatest single aspect that has separated the series from other games of its ilk would be the damage modeling that accounts for some of the most exciting and visceral crashes experienced in racing games. War of the Roses is like Battlefield, but with swords

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2064 days, 19 hours, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, January 28, 2012 11:27:31 AM GMT
Imagine for a second Battlefield, but strip away the guns and modern day machines and replace it all with swords, crossbows and horses. That's what Paradox is creating with War of the Roses, set to be the biggest game ever made by the company. It's Paradox's dream game, and developer Fat Shark looks to be making something really special here. Plus it helps that Gordan Van Dyke, a former DICE man who has over five years of experience with the Battlefield series, is part of the team. (more)

The Darkness 2 executions trailer is the grossest

Okay, well, technically that other trailer for The Darkness 2 was the grossest, but this new one is a really, really close second. If there's one thing we know for sure at this point, it's that these demons are seriously offended by human heads being attached to human spines and bodies. (more)

Dead Block didn't exactly set the world on fire when it was released, but those interested in its rockabilly take on the zombie apocalypse can pick it up from several download services for $10. Terraria goes retail in EU with 'Collector's Edition' on March 16

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2065 days, 21 hours, 8 minutes ago

Despite selling over 1 million copies of Terraria across Terra Firma, Merge Games believes the title has yet to reach a key demographic: PC game buyers without internet connections. Okay, okay, it's also possible that the Merge Games-published "Collector's Edition" of the Re-Logic-developed 2D indie hit is popular enough to warrant a version made especially for superfans, but we much prefer the concept of a board meeting to discuss a gradually disappearing group of people. Angry Birds catapulting to Facebook on Valentine's Day

Mirroring the plans of every bitter, lonely soul the world over, Rovio will be filling Facebook with anger come Valentine's Day. Granted, Rovio's February 14 release of Angry Birds for the social-networking site will be quite a bit different from the vitriolic bile we'll be spewing as a projection of our own debilitating loneliness, but both activities do involve throwing things and impassioned rants about how things didn't go as planned.
