On a wind swept plain stand a brother and a sister. Swords drawn ready to fight off the creatures that are heading towards them waving swords of their own. A swift blow from the brothers axe takes out one and fireball from the sister, a powerful mage, reduces another to pile of red goo. More waves of enemies arrive, the brother makes a gallant vow to keep on fighting until they are defeated. Soon, a giant troll charges into the fray and the duo battle the beast until it is defeated by a devastating spell... (more)

Fallout: New Vegas has a definitive end

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2651 days, 4 hours, 48 minutes ago
Friday, August 20, 2010 8:02:40 AM GMT
The main story quest of Fallout 3 (spoiler alert!) ended the game, but the "Broken Steel" add-on changed the ending to let you go back into the Capital Wasteland. That seems unlikely to happen with Fallout: New Vegas because of the way the game ends (and what the ending tells you). At a New Vegas demo last month, senior producer Jason Bergman told me that the ending to New Vegas "explains things well beyond the end of [the] game," including "what happens to every one of our factions and major characters." PC gamers will be able to get their clawed hands on Capcom's Lost Planet 2 come October 15th. This game has DirectX 9 and 11 support inside, and also plays nice with NVIDIA's 3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround tech. Capcom says that with DirectX 11, "smoke will have lifelike volume and depth, water surfaces react realistically to player interaction and bullets, and level bosses are rendered with more detail than ever before." Paranormal FPS sequel F.E.A.R. 3 had previously been set to scare on October 20, 2010, but now Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed to Joystiq that the game will take on corporeal form sometime in 2011. No reason was given for the delay. Black Ops already spooking the competition? (more)

Left 4 Dead 2 mutates again, DLC teased

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2657 days, 3 hours, 28 minutes ago
Saturday, August 14, 2010 9:23:00 AM GMT
Thanks to Left 4 Dead 2, Friday has become some kind of weekly masochistic holiday. This week proves no different, as the latest mutation, Iron Man, pits the survivors against the Infected with "no respawns, no restarts, no ammo, all tension." In other words, you get the ammo you start with, no one respawns and, should your whole crew bite the dust (or be bitten by dusty zombies), you'll have to start the entire campaign over again. Ouch. If you thought Valve was going to cash out its stock in Team Fortress 2 after releasing an update for the game's ninth and final class, then you thought wrong. Speaking to PC Gamer, Valve's Robin Walker revealed that a mess of new content would be added to the game in yet another free update next month. Of course, after feeding "next month" through our inscrutable Valve Time Converter, that time period actually ranges between September 2010 and April 2035 (more)

Nail'd secures October 19 release date

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2657 days, 3 hours, 33 minutes ago
Saturday, August 14, 2010 9:17:40 AM GMT
Techland's insane ATV game Nail'd might defy reality in many ways, chaining together ridiculous stunts that nobody should ever do, on courses that rely on incredible, unlikely circumstances -- but even something with as little regard for the real world as this must adhere to linear time. To that end, publisher Deep Silver has announced a release date for the game: October 19 in North America, and October 22 in Europe. (more)

With that said, we will be over in Germany next week for GDC Europe and GamesCom. EA and Sony have back-to-back press conferences scheduled for next Tuesday, starting at 10:00 a.m. EDT. Although we aren't expecting another reveal like last year's PS3 Slim, surprises are always welcome. So, check out our coverage of Europe's biggest gaming show next week. (more)

Ken Levine: Why Irrational didn't do BioShock 2; What he thought of it

With the announcement of BioShock Infinite, you may be asking yourself, "Well, why did you bow out of doing Bioshock 2, Irrational Games, only to come back to the BioShock universe?" According to comments from IG head honcho Ken Levine during our recent interview, he "felt like we said what we wanted to say about Rapture." He went on to say, "that's one of the reasons BioShock 2 wasn't the right project for us and, as we agreed with the company, we didn't have the timeframe or the scale to make the prod... (more)

The Old Republic's 'tunnel shooter' space combat explained

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2660 days, 4 hours, 25 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 8:25:41 AM GMT
Specifics about the recently announced space combat mechanics in LucasArts and BioWare's upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, have been awfully hard to come by. Rumors have circulated claiming the game's aerial component would resemble an on-rails shooter, while others say it would give players full control over their ship's movement. The real answer, as revealed by the October edition of PC Gamer, falls somewhere in between. (more)

Hands-on: Sid Meier's Civilization V

I have fond memories of playing Civilization II on my old HP Pavilion. Part of the charm about Civilization II was that it was an incredibly deep and enjoyable game hidden beneath a relatively simple exterior. I must have spent hundreds of hours playing that game, which means a lot for someone who does not view his personal computer as much of a game machine. (more)

All grown up: Quake Live out of beta, got a job (offering subscription plans)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2664 days, 4 hours, 53 minutes ago

Like that good-for-nothing kid who won't leave the house and get a job, Quake Live – id Software's mostly free-to-play browser-based FPS – is moving on. Granted, having been announced three years ago this month and only being playable to the public since last February, Quake Live is a little ... mature for its age. But id just revealed via parent company Bethesda's blog (that's still weird, isn't it?) that Quake Live "has officially exited beta."Bethesda, free-to-play, id-Software, pc, Quake-Live (more)

Real Madrid's Kaka announced as FIFA 11 cover athlete

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2665 days, 2 hours, 38 minutes ago

EA Sports has announced that Brazilian soccer star Kaká (pronounced kuh-KA, not like "caca," you immature dolts) will be on the cover of every copy of FIFA 11. But he's just one of 17 footballers who will appear on the box -- the game will have territory-specific packaging, so players from teams in other countries will join Kaká on the box in those respective nations. (At this time, EA is not revealing the other cover athletes.) (more)

Blizzard now moderating 'inappropriate' StarCraft 2 maps

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2665 days, 2 hours, 54 minutes ago

Look out, all you naughty StarCraft 2 map makers out there, Blizzard is watching. A thread popped up on the StarCraft 2 community forum in which a user named Cyrileo complained of his map being removed from Battle.net. According to Cyrileo, the mapped was deemed "inappropriate" by Blizzard and subsequently deleted. Further on in the thread, as reported by our cohorts at Big Download, Blizzard community manager Lylirra noted that all maps are "subject to review to ensure that they promote a fun and safe...
