PC gamers won't get Darksiders until September

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2638 days, 15 hours, 59 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 7:08:18 PM GMT
Vigil Games' Darksiders: Wrath of War was one of the better action-adventure games in recent memory. Plus, it was a new IP with a cool premise -- and it's actually getting a much-deserved sequel. So many elements went terrifically right on this one, I was almost led to believe the planets aligned for THQ. The reason I say "almost" is this: the PC version of Darksiders was supposed to hit this summer. It's now being held back until September 24, unfortunately. On the bright side, those who wait have the ... (more)

Game SERIES Debate to the Death! Mass Effect series

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2638 days, 16 hours, 13 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 6:54:11 PM GMT
Just like the previous debate, calling Mass Effect a series after two games feels a little strange, but just like Golden Sun, Mass Effect is a series where fans loved the sequel as much -- or even more -- than the original game. That ended up being the case in the last debate, so this week should be interesting to watch. The original game took an early lead, but the sequel slowly built momentum and eventually overcame the first game in votes: (more)

That fleshy slapping sound you just heard was the massive, simultaneous facepalm of cantankerous old gamers the world over. In an interview with Big Download, BioWare co-founder Trent Oster -- now head of IdeaSpark Labs, which is developing MDK 2 HD -- revealed that his company plans to do some "some tuning" to the notoriously difficult game. StarCraft 2 free for WoW players in Korea, loses 18+ rating

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 2 hours, 38 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 8:29:13 AM GMT
Blizzard is tweaking the business model for its upcoming StarCraft 2 release in Korea. IGN reports that the RTS will be free for Korean subscribers to World of Warcraft there, as Blizzard reportedly wants to bolster the MMO's player base overseas. Other players will be able to buy the game outright for the US equivalent of about $54, or pick up $8 monthly or even $1.60 daily passes for the game, so Blizzard will still make a googoojillion dollars on the long-awaited sequel in Korea. No word on if these ... (more)

While there were a few bugs, the service has been up 24/7 since launch, and OnLive says it's "accommodated far more members at this stage than ever anticipated." Steam's Perils of Summer sale: What's the damage so far?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 11 hours, 6 minutes ago

I hadn't planned on posting any of the daily deals for Steam's "Perils of Summer" promotion. Not because it isn't terrific, especially compared to the competition's offerings -- it totally is -- but because I figured you all were perfectly capable of typing "store.steampowered.com" into your browser. Watch the Portal 2 E3 demo and smile

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 11 hours, 12 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 11:55:06 PM GMT
There are more than a few great things in this video (which covers the first part of our E3 single-player demo; six more parts are expected this week). The first is the introduction of a cheeky, British personality orb. He's cheeky, British, and we already love him. And GLaDOS. Oh, GLaDOS, how we have missed you. Anyway, just try to watch this video without smiling (or outright laughing). We dare you. Go ahead. You monsters. (more)

Last week, Mobile 1UP developer Aaron Ardiri challenged himself to a daunting task: complete a marathon programming session to bring his PalmOS version of Lemmings to other platforms. After 36 straight hours of tireless porting and liveblogging, Ardiri managed to push the classic puzzler onto the iPhone App Store and Palm App Catalog (where it's currently awaiting approval), as well as Windows and Mac (where it's currently available to download for free). MDK2 coming to Wii and PC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2641 days, 3 hours, 10 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:56:31 AM GMT
MDK2 is quite the game. It's a little weird, but a total blast to play with some really creative level design for its three playable characters. Or so I'm told. I've never actually dug into it because I have a fear of characters with large pointy heads (damn you, Silent Hill!). However, if I can overcome my largiapointyheadphobia by later this year I will have another chance to play the game as Interplay and Beamdog have announced that the BioWare-developed game will be getting a Wii and PC release. Preview: The Agency's Player vs Player mode

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2641 days, 3 hours, 25 minutes ago
Monday, June 28, 2010 7:41:25 AM GMT
For me, the selling point of MMOs is the huge, open world; a world full of other actual human beings who I can interact with and who can interact with me (almost like real life!). So when I snuck in some time with The Agency at Sony Online Entertainment's E3 booth this year, it was hard for me to shake the feeling that I was playing an Unreal Tournament-style, Ijji.com shooter (one powered by a modified Unreal Engine 3, no less) rather than an MMO. Sure, the Deathmatch trappings of my demo didn't help, ... (more)

THQ is obliging this desire with a line of Darksiders merchandise produced in collaboration with partners in the publishing and toy industries. (more)

Jimpressions: Bodycount

Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:54:54 AM GMT
While at E3, I got to get my hands on Codemasters' Bodycount, the new game headed up by Black developer Stuart Black. Promising a "pure" shooter experience where it's all about the guns, Bodycount sounds like a good deal for guys who just want to kill stuff. I certainly like where it's going. We already have a full preview, but here are some quick Jimpressions! (more)

China adding new restrictions on online games August 1

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2645 days, 3 hours, 41 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:26:02 AM GMT
Though China's online game market continues to exponentially increase in value, the nation's Ministry of Culture plans on slapping another round of restrictive regulations on MMOs and other online titles on August 1. The new regulations are designed to protect minors from "unwholesome" content while playing online, while also introducing measures which will prevent them from succumbing to the sweet, sweet siren song of online gaming addiction. Zynga's Frontierville already has 5 million daily active users

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2645 days, 3 hours, 42 minutes ago
Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:25:05 AM GMT
Zynga recently learned a very profitable lesson from the launch of its newest casual networking game -- people aren't obsessed with Farms, as it turns out. What they can't get enough of are Villes. The player base for Frontierville, a browser-based family-raising (and, yes, farming) sim set in the Wild West, is evidence of this assertion -- Zynga emailed us earlier today, announcing the game has racked up over 5 million "daily active users" since going live June 9. The evil genius of Portal 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 2 hours, 20 minutes ago
Monday, June 21, 2010 8:47:04 AM GMT
Portal 2 is going to be amazing. Do you know how I know this? Because a mere fifteen minute presentation of the game had a room full of cynical, jaded, miserable game "journalists" laughing out loud. That's what Portal is all about as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the puzzles are fantastic, the central gimmick is unique, but it's the comedy that really sets Portal apart. (more)
